Golf Tees: A Humble Equipment's Interesting History

Golf Tees in Play and in the Rules

Golf tees are among the humblest of golf equipment, one of the game's "supporting" characters; yet golf tees are essential for most golfers. The tee is the implement that supports the golf ball, raising it above the ground, when the ball is played from the teeing ground.

Although golfers aren't required to use a tee on tee shots, the vast majority of us do. Why hit the ball from off the ground if you don't have to? As Jack Nicklaus says, air offers less resistance than the ground.

In the official Rules of Golf, "tee" is defined thusly:

"A 'tee' is a device designed to raise the ball off the ground. It must not be longer than 4 inches (101.6 mm), and it must not be designed or manufactured in such a way that it could indicate the line of play or influence the movement of the ball."

The governing bodies of golf - the R&A and the USGA - rule on the conformity of golf tees, same as they do for any other golf equipment.

Modern golf tees are pegs that are pushed into the ground, usually made of wood or plastic/rubber compounds. Typically, the top end of the tee is flared and concave to support the golf ball and keep it stable and stationary; however, the design of the top of the peg can vary.

Tees may only be used when playing the first stroke of a hole from the teeing ground. An exception is when there is a penalty that requires the golfer to return to the teeing ground and replay the stroke.

How high should you tee the ball? The depends on what club you're using. See the FAQ, "how high should the ball be teed?"

On the following pages, we take a look back at the history of the humble golf tee, noting some of the significant developments along the way.

Sand Tees and Earlier

Tools designed specifically for teeing a golf ball started arriving on the scene in the late 1800s (although it's safe to assume that individual golfers were experimenting with different implements before that).

How did golfers tee up their golf balls before the invention and manufacture of modern golf tees?

The earliest "tees" were just clumps of dirt. Golfers in the ancient mists of Scotland would use a club or their shoe to stab the ground, digging up a little mound of turf on which to set the golf ball.

As golf matured and became more organized, sand tees became the norm. What's a sand tee? Take a little bit of wet sand, shape it into a conical mound, place the golf ball atop the mound, and you have a sand tee.

Sand tees were still the norm into the early 1900s. Golfers typically found a box of sand on each teeing ground (which is the origin of the term "tee box"). Sometimes there was also water provided, and the golfer would wet his hand, then get a handful of sand to shape into a tee. Or the sand in the "tee box" was already wet and easily shaped.

Either way, sand tees were messy, and by the late 1800s, implements for teeing the golf ball started showing up in patent offices.

First Golf Tee Patent

As noted, it's safe to assume that golfers who were also tinkerers and craftsmen were experimenting with different types of golf tees - devices and implements designed specifically for the task of raising and cradling the golf ball - prior to the first tee patents.

But eventually, one of those tinkerers did have to file the first patent application for a golf tee. And that person was actually two people, William Bloxsom and Arthur Douglas of Scotland.

Bloxsom and Douglas received British patent No. 12,941, issued in 1889 for "An Improved Golf Tee or Rest." The Bloxsom/Douglas tee had a flat, wedge-shaped base a couple inches from end to end, with several prongs at the narrow end of the base on which to set the golf ball. This tee sat on top of the ground, rather than being pressed into the ground.

The first-known tee designed to be pushed into the ground was called the "Perfectum" and was patented in 1892 by Percy Ellis of England. The Perfectum was essentially a nail with a rubber ring added to its head.

There were other patents issued during this era, as well, for both types of tees - those that sat on top of the ground, and those that pierced the ground. Many were never marketed, and none of them caught on commercially.

George Franklin Grant's Tee

Who is the inventor of the golf tee? If you search the Web, one name you will commonly find in answer to that question is that of Dr. George Franklin Grant.

But as we've seen on previous pages, Grant did not invent the golf tee. What Dr. Grant did do was patent a wooden peg that pierced the ground. Grant's patent is what caused him to be recognized by the United States Golf Association in 1991 as the inventor of the wooden golf tee.

Grant's patent is United States patent No. 638,920, and he received it in 1899.

Grant was one of the first African-American graduates of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and later became the first African-American faculty member at Harvard. His other inventions include a device to treat a cleft palate. Grant would be a historical figure worth remembering regardless of any role he played in the development of the golf tee.

But Grant's role in golf tee development was long forgotten. His wooden tee was not the familiar shape of today's tees, and the top of Grant's tee was not concave, meaning that the ball had to be carefully balanced on the flat top of the wooden peg.

Grant never manufactured the tee and never marketed it, so his tee was seen by almost no one outside his circle of friends.

And sand tees continued as the norm on golf courses for another couple decades after Grant's patent was issued.

The Reddy Tee

The golf tee finally found its modern form - and its audience - with the introduction of the Reddy Tee.

The Reddy Tee was the invention of Dr. William Lowell Sr. - like Grant, a dentist - who patented his design in 1925 (U.S. Patent #1,670,627). But even before the patent was finalized, Grant had struck a deal with the Spalding Company for their manufacture.

The Reddy Tee was wood (later plastic) and Lowell's first tees were green. He later switched to red, hence the name "Reddy Tee." Lowell's tee pierced the ground and had a concave platform at the flared top that cradled the ball, holding it stably in place.

Unlike his predecessor inventors, Dr. Lowell heavily marketed his tee. The masterstroke was signing Walter Hagen in 1922 to use Reddy Tees during an exhibition tour. The Reddy Tee took off after that, Spalding started mass-producing them, and other companies started copying them.

And ever since, the basic golf tee has looked the same: A wooden or plastic peg, flared at one end, with the flared end concave to cradle the ball.

Today, there are fancier versions of tees that use bristles, tines or prongs to support the ball; that come with depth indicators on the shaft of the peg to indicate ideal ball heights; that use angled rather than straight pegs. But the majority of tees in play continue to be the same form and function as the Reddy Tee.

The More Things Change .

Remember back on page two we noted that in olden times golfers would simply stab the earth to gouge up a chunk of turf, and "tee" the golf ball on that?

Well, everything old is new again. LPGA major champion Laura Davies uses the same technique today, as pictured in the image above. For a brief time, Michelle Wie copied Davies' technique.

But please, do not try this at home. Davies is pretty much alone in harkening back to the earliest method of teeing a golf ball. This method tears up the teeing ground, and also makes it more difficult for players less-skilled than Davies to make good, clean contact with the ball.

A Gentleman Doesn’t Call It a “Wife-Beater,” and He Also Shouldn’t Wear One

Brandos vs. Gables

Should a gentleman wear an undershirt? T-, V-, or A-?

Please send your questions for publication to gentlemanscholarslate@gmail.com. (Questions may be edited.)

I live in a hot, humid climate where even an office drone like me is apt to sweat through his shirt when walking from his air-conditioned car to his air-conditioned office. That's why I find undershirts to be essential. A discreetly colored, properly worn V-neck should be invisible under one’s shirt, but I’ve heard some people claim that the very act of wearing an undershirt is “tacky” and “uncouth.” I try very hard to fool people into not noticing how tacky I am: Are my undershirts giving me away?

Thank you for your email.

This simple garment is, in its way, the most psychologically intimate piece of apparel in a man’s wardrobe. Our attitudes about its presence or absence indirectly reflect all manner of viewpoints and hang-ups connected to taste, class, ethnicity, modesty, eroticism, and hygiene. Confronted with the quadrennial idiocy of the boxers-or-briefs question, a presidential candidate can answer and smoothly move on to another frivolous query; no one wants to dwell below the belt too long. But to deliver a substantive answer about the undershirt would risk alienating a sizable portion of the electorate. Witness the 219 passionate posts on this 2012 discussion on Styleforum: “Do you wear an undershirt? Why?”

At the risk of dignifying fanaticism, I will designate the two sides of this debate as, respectively, the Brandos and the Gables. The Brandos I so dub because every exercise in undershirt semiotics must mention the forced intimacy of Stanley Kowalski revealing his undershirt to Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire. The Gables, meanwhile, get their name from the popular myth that the King of Hollywood single-chestedly crippled the undershirt trade with his non-undershirted striptease in It Happened One Night.

Fine, great. You don’t want to be disgusting, and I don’t want to be disgusted, so do your thing.

The strongest part of the Brandos’ argument promotes undershirts as a means of keeping bodily secretions away from overshirts. Some Brandos also reason that the lushness of their chest hair and the pointiness of their nipples need to be decisively shielded from public view.

To the Brandos, I say, Fine, great. You don’t want to be disgusting, and I don’t want to be disgusted, so do your thing. But V-necks with open collars, and crewnecks with closed collars, please. Especially considering the yellowing accelerated by antiperspirants, I disapprove of the “A-shirt”—the tank top that a gentleman refrains from calling a “wife-beater”—because it does not protect the pits. A V-neck shirt worn under a buttoned-up dress shirt is a bad move. And it is inexcusably uncool to expose the collar of a white crewneck undershirt worn beneath a dress shirt. The peeking T-shirt gives the impression that your mother dresses you—a sorry situation tenderly discussed by the internationally acclaimed style guru Jonathan Franzen. A passage of The Discomfort Zone looks back to the traumas of junior high school:

Sometimes the pin came undone and stuck him, but to wear no undershirt at all would have made Franzen “feel too naked.” It’s that sense of a membrane protecting one’s self from his public front that keeps our Brandos and Franzens returning to the hands of Hanes, I strongly suspect.

It is difficult to get a Gable to explain why he should be so fervent in his position. This is partly because it can be slightly awkward to admit that one likes to show off some chest—and almost impossible to confess that one’s sense of undershirts as square or Midwestern or prudish or fussy has a tinge of classism to it. The virility of the item is clearly working-class, as Stanley Kowalski proved. To disdain the undershirt on the grounds that it’s “uncouth” is to turn up one’s nose at the blue-collar shirt sometimes worn over it.

So, I say to the letter writer: Who cares what they think? Your unseen undershirt gives nothing away. You keep it out of sight, and we’ll keep the whole issue out of mind, except when prompted to dwell on the swaddling psychological comfort and mundane eroticism of this sanitary second skin.

What’s the civic obligation to point out a very questionable-looking mole on a stranger? – Joshua Stewart

I just don't understand the non-undershirt crowd. First, they actually keep you cooler. More.

Thank you for your tweet.

I’m afraid you can’t do this. Only a medical doctor could pull this off; indeed, you might be able to spin the Hippocratic Oath to argue that a dermatologist would be doing harm if he didn’t point out a likely melanoma to a stranger. From the mouth of anyone else, however, advice of this kind is impossible. A well-intentioned intrusion is still an intrusion, so unless you’re alerting the stranger to a physical problem with an immediate solution (“Hey, I think that’s a tick on your arm”) or one of great urgency (“Hey, I think you’re walking around in a state of shock brought on by head trauma”), you must mind your own beeswax.

When Should I Prune a Maple Tree?

Maple trees are recognizable for their brilliantly-colored fall foliage, which naturally appears in shades of bright red or yellow. As a shade tree, maples perform well thanks to a spreading, deciduous canopy of green leaves. But as a landscaping tree, maple requires a little extra care and attention. Knowing when and how to properly prune maple trees is essential, as improper pruning will cause more harm than good.

Pruning Times

Many gardeners limit pruning to fall and winter, when the tree is dormant and no longer creating new growth. Pruning does not have to be limited to dormant phases of the tree's life, however. Maple trees contain sap, which will "bleed" if the tree is pruned in early spring or late winter. To avoid this phenomenon, pruning may be put off until summer. The only time that's off-limits is early summer, when pruning may damage tender new bud growth.

Shape Pruning

Maple trees may be pruned for shaping purposes; this is the practice of thinning and trimming trees to make them look more attractive. For some trees, the practice of thinning branches is a necessity because canopy growth becomes too dense for tree health. When pruning branches in order to maintain a specific tree shape or thin out the canopy, cuts may be made any time but early spring.

Light Pruning

Light pruning is an ongoing process for any tree. Cutting away damaged and diseased branches is an absolute necessity that occurs throughout the year, any time the gardener notices a problem. Heavier, shape pruning is usually restricted to fall or winter after the tree has gone dormant for the season. Any time you notice a branch that is unhealthy, that's the best time to cut it off. Leaving diseased and damaged branches on the tree may only encourage the problem to spread.

Pruning Instructions

When pruning a maple, always make cuts at an angle rather than vertically. To thin out a branch canopy, the entire branch is cut away back to its first joint next to the trunk. Prune away branches that are growing laterally across other branches. Do not cut into the collar of the branch, the ridge which is found just at the base of the branch itself, lest you create damage to the tree.

Is Rooibos Tea Better Than Green Tea?

Roobios is said to having amazing health benefits, but should you swap your green tea for it?

There's a new super-beverage in town, and its name is rooibos tea. Although technically not a tea — it's actually made from an African bush — this herbal drink is surging in popularity. Besides having a striking red color and a flavor that's nutty, fruity and a bit like tobacco, roobios tea may be best known for its purported health benefits, which range from reducing stress to fighting cancer to making skin look younger. But how true are these health claims? And should you swap out your daily cup or two of green tea for roobios? Or is the fad totally overblown?

Unlike white, green and black tea that all come from the same plant, Rooibos tea comes from a broom-like shrub. Rooibos tea is high in antioxidants, has very small amounts of many different minerals and is calorie-free, says Mary Hartley, a registered dietitian in New York City.

"Rooibos has trace amounts of many different minerals: iron, calcium, potassium, manganese, magnesium, fluoride, zinc and copper, but tea and coffee have their share of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins, too," she says.

When it comes to antioxidant levels, green tea has the slight edge, Hartley says, although unfermented rooibos (which is actually green) takes a pretty close second. Rooibos tea gets its characteristic red color once it's been fermented. You can drink rooibos tea hot or cold, sweetened or not or with or without milk.

While there are a lot of health claims out there, besides the antioxidant count, not much has been proven about rooibos tea. So why has this red tea gotten so red hot recently? It may be our love of exotic superfoods, she says.

"It’s popular now because we can now import it from South Africa, the only place it grows, since apartheid-based trade sanctions were lifted in 2000," Hartley says. "It is also popular because people in the U.S. seem to be attracted to expensive, medicinal foods from exotic places with weird names and lots of promises."

However, this no-caffiene drink is a nice alternative to green tea, white tea, black tea or coffee. Whether you swap your usual green tea or coffee for it really comes down to personal preference, Hartley says.

"Green tea is somewhat better than rooibos, and rooibos is just as wonderful, but no better, than other teas and coffee," she says. "And so then it gets down to the price and the taste."

Who knows what new things researchers will learn about this hot new brew as time goes on. We know one thing though: this time of year the bright red color sure is festive!

Have you tried rooibos tea? Did you like it? Will you try it? Tell us!
