Transforming SMALLHOLDER COFFEE farmers‘ livelihoods through Ibero uganda's Sustainable Sourcing Strategy

Introduction

Coffee is by far the largest export product of Uganda, accounting for 20% of export revenues. With approx. 1.3 million households, Uganda has the largest number of coffee farming families in the world.

Despite favorable agro-climatic conditions for its production and a constant global increase in demand for the product, those smallholder coffee farmers still operate at a very low productivity. The reasons for this are varied, such as a lack of reliable access to agronomic skills, inputs, finance and markets. The farmers as well as Ugandan exporter Ibero are falling far short of their possible potential.

Therefore, NKG BLOOM was initiated by importer Bernhard Rothfos and Ugandan exporter Ibero, both members of Hamburg based Neumann Kaffee Gruppe. They established a network of partner companies in order to create NKG BLOOM, a sustainable sourcing strategy.

At the heart of NKG BLOOM is the set up of a fully fledged Farmer Financing Unit within the Ibero operation. This unit provides fertilizer and cash advances to farmers, as part of a 2-year crop-nutrition program that should increase farm-level productivity by at least 75% after 2 years. Moreover, Ibero is setting up, through a complex and innovative set of partnerships, an ecosystem of support to farmers that includes agronomy and financial literacy trainings. For Ibero, this is a business opportunity and not just a CSR initiative. The idea is to be able to grow its sourcing capacity and ultimately its business competitiveness hand in hand with the growth of farmers.

Several years before NKG BLOOM was initiated, the non-profit foundation Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung (HRNS) has started its work in Uganda in order to build the Coffee Farmer Alliance (UCFA) - laying the foundation for NKG BLOOM:

PARTICIPATING FARMS & DEPOT COMMITTEES

In Uganda, smallholder coffee farmers from several coffee regions are organized in 82 Depot Committees (DC's), which are registered companies with up to 800 farmers and so-called Producer Organizations, a group of up to 30 farmers. All DC's are organized by the Coffee Farmer Alliance (UCFA).

In January 2017, NKG BLOOM has started and has already disbursed fertilizers to 493 farmers at 7 Depot Committees.

how nkg bloom works

Today, the average Ugandan farmer produces only 550 kg of green coffee per ha, in one main crop and one fly crop, while its counterpart in Vietnam yields on average 2.500 kg per ha. But Demo-plots of HRNS in Uganda prove, that the average yield of the Ugandan farmer could increase up to 1.625 per ha within only two years. What the Ugandan farmer needs is basically fertilizer and cash (besides agronomic training).

A 2 year crop nutrition program cycle is the starting point for Ibero Uganda and all partners to improve the smallholder coffee farmers' livelihoods and to establish the sustainable sourcing strategy in Uganda. Ev ery farmer has to meet specific eligibility criteria and to complete an application process before he is getting two guaranteed fertilizer and cash (mobile money) disbursements.

After every two disbursements, the farmer has to fully repay the disbursements by bringing coffee to exporter Ibero Uganda.

The farmer cannot reapply for the next two disbursements before the repayment is fully done.

About the International Coffee Partners

What makes us unique is:

  • a commitment to measure the performance of our work on the basis of impact
  • a long term vision for empowering coffee producers worldwide
  • a practical, hands-on approach to promoting sustainability in coffee
  • and a solid network of dedicated long term partners of the public and private sector who share our vision

THE PARTNERS

Franck, one of the most successful food production and export companies in Croatia, started its long history and fine tradition over 120 years ago. The story of Franck goes back to 1827, when a young and ambitious German entrepreneur named Johann H. Franck managed to produce a coffee substitute using chicory root. Today Franck has grown to an international food producers still based in Zagreb, Croatia, with a product range between coffee, tea and snacks.

Considering the fact that Franck must also secure a great deal of raw materials from outside Croatia, they are actively helping the realization of sustainable projects on an international level. That is to say, at the start of 2014 Franck became a full member of the International Coffee Partners (ICP), an initiative founded in 2001 by the five leading European coffee producers and distributors.

Joh. Johannson

Joh. Johannson Kaffe AS produces and markets coffee under Ali and Evergood brands. The company offers blending, roasting, grinding, and packaging services. The company was founded in 1866 and is based in Oslo, Norway. Joh. Johannson Kaffe AS operates as a subsidiary of NorgesGruppen ASA.

A sustainable Vision: “I don’t want to be part of a world that destroys nature.”

In 1934, when Luigi Lavazza embarked on a journey to Brazil he expressed profound distress when he saw entire unsold coffee harvests being destroyed before his eyes. The experience impacted significantly on his entrepreneurial vision. Since then, Lavazza has always been attentive to the economic, human, environmental and cultural assets of the countries where it operates.

THE COMMITMENT OF THE LAVAZZA FOUNDATION

In 2004, the Giuseppe and Pericle Lavazza Foundation, dedicated to the second generation of the Lavazza family, was officially created. The aim of the Lavazza Foundation is to design and implement international sustainability projects in coffee-producing countries and, at the same time, support environmental and social development.

The Foundation is active in initiating sustainable development projects in coffee-producing countries, aimed at increasing agricultural productivity, disseminating good practices, developing tools to help producers minimize and manage the impacts of climate change and promoting entrepreneurship, regardless of whether the producers are part of Lavazza’s supply chain. In addition, Lavazza also works on issues such as gender equality, food security, reforestation, minimising the environmental impact of coffee production and protecting biodiversity.

For Lavazza, sustainability is a continuous improvement process and that the contribution of all stakeholders is necessary to create shared value throughout the supply chain. Improvement, innovation and development only take place through constant and continuous interaction and exchange. In 2001, Lavazza was among the funding members of the International Coffee Partners (ICP) - the association that brings together some of the world’s major coffee roasters and traders. Together, they have designed and implemented a series of sustainability projects, so far involving about 40,000 producers, to implement sustainable agricultural techniques, improve infrastructure and provide commercial support, bringing social, economic and environmental benefits.

AB Anders Löfberg is one of the largest family-owned coffee roasters in the Nordic countries. The production is equivalent to more than 10 million cups of good coffee – per day! Our head office is situated in Karlstad, Sweden, and we have our own roasting houses in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Latvia. We sell our coffee on about ten markets in Northern Europe.

The company was founded in 1906 by the brothers Anders, John and Josef Löfberg. In 1911, we began to roast our own coffee. Our passion for good coffee has been with us since the start, as well as our commitment to sustainability and justice. We are for example already one of the world’s largest importers of organic and Fairtrade labelled coffee. The company is fully owned by the Löfberg family. As a family business, it has always been natural to have a long-term, value-driven and sustainable perspective in our business. Long tradition combined with the will to constantly develop and be in the forefront, that is our strength on a coffee market with tough competition. Products and markets Up to the 1990’s, we were more or less only operating in Sweden. Since then, we have started and purchased companies in Norway, Denmark, Latvia and the UK. Today, our coffee is being sold under the brands Löfbergs, Peter Larsen Kaffe, Melna, Crema, Percol and Green Cup. Half of our sales is to Retail and a quarter is to cafés and restaurants (Out of Home). The rest is to external customers that sell or serve coffee under their own brands. In Sweden, we also sell tea under the brand Kobbs.
