Do Yohimbe Supplements Work for ED?

In this Article

In this Article

Traditionally, people in western Africa have used the bark of the yohimbe tree as an aphrodisiac and to boost general health as well as athletic performance.

Now you can get yohimbe bark extract as a dietary supplement that you can buy without a prescription. Its promoters claim it can help erectile dysfunction (ED), low sex drive in women, and the unwanted sexual side effects of some antidepressant medicines. But the science around modern claims shows mixed results or not enough research.

Not the Same as Prescription

Yohimbe bark extract isn't the same as yohimbine hydrochloride, the prescription treatment for impotence that's been around since the 1930s. So you can't take it instead of the medication, or expect that it will work the same way.

Prescription drugs are strictly regulated by the FDA around testing and labeling, and they have to approved before they can be sold. But supplements don't have the same requirements, and they don't need FDA approval before you can buy them. The companies that make and sell them are responsible for their safety and truthful labeling.

Researchers analyzed several yohimbe supplements and found that the amount of the key compound, yohimbine, was less than it would be in the tree's bark. They also found that many of the products had things that aren't normally in yohimbe bark.

Safety and Side Effects

Yohimbe may affect medications you're taking and other supplements. It can make you bleed easier if you're taking a blood thinner, like warfarin (Coumadin). You shouldn't use yohimbe if you're taking medicine for diabetes, or if you have kidney, liver, or heart problems. Avoid it if you have seizures or a mental illness, including ADHD.

Side effects can include:

Yohimbe tee

One study looked at the behavioural effects of the simultaneous injection of yohimbine (500 microg/kg) plus apomorphine (50 microg/kg) and those of the combined treatment of haloperidol (125 microg), a nonspecific dopamine receptor antagonist, with an effective dose of yohimbine (2000 microg/kg) on sexually satiated rats were evaluated. Data show that yohimbine and apomorphine, per se, dose-dependently reverse sexual exhaustion by increasing the percentage of sexually satiated rats copulating and resuming copulation after ejaculation. There are 31 alkaloids found in Yohimbe bark and the main active constituent is the alkaloid yohimbine, although yohimbe bark also contains other important alkaloids. Yohimbine blocks alpha-2 adrenergic receptors which are part of the sympathetic nervous system. It has also been reported that yohimbine dilates blood vessels and may even inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO), whereby preventing a number of depressive disorders. However, unlike St. John's wort and other popular herbs, yohimbe does not have the research to support its medicinal claims.

According to the Mayo Clinic, yohimbine can be dangerous if used in excessive amounts as higher doses of oral yohimbine may create numerous side effects such as rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, and over stimulation. may produce anxiety and is thought to cause insomnia and sleeplessness in some users.

The seed is rare though the tree may grow from root cuttings and it takes years to grow to a harvestable size, so its not a practicable option for the home gardener, rather a commercial option for an enterprising farmer who will find a ready market.

Yohimbe Bark Tea Benefits, Preparation and Side Effects

Yohimbe tea is made from the bark of the yohimbe tree, an evergreen found in West Africa. This tea was traditionally prepared as an herbal medicine to improve libido and energy, treat coughs and fevers, and for topical applications.

Yohimbe tea contains an active alkaloid, known as yohimbine. This plant extract has been widely researched for its effects on erectile function, sex drive, weight loss and more.

Prior to the commercial release of Viagara and other PDE-5 inhibitors, yohimbine hydrochloride (Yocon) was used as a first-line intervention in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. However, it is no longer widely used as a prescription drug due to the potential risk of side effects.

There is still significant demand for herbal yohimbe tea as a remedy for low sex drive in both men and women. You can buy raw yohimbe bark or liquid extracts to brew the tea at home, but caution is advised to avoid adverse effects.

      Yohimbe Bark Tea Benefits

The yohimbine in yohimbe bark tea acts on the body in several different ways. It increases the production of norepinephrine, a naturally-occurring hormone.

Norepinephrine (noradrenaline) is involved in regulating fat metabolism, energy levels, blood pressure, mental focus, motivation and many more functions in the body.

Yohimbine also increases the body’s potential to become sexually aroused as well as improving sensitivity to touch. It has a significant effect on sex drive in both men and women and has been reported to improve sexual enjoyment by many users.

In research studies, yohimbe and yohimbine supplements have been observed to help:

      • Alleviate anxiety, especially when anxiety is rooted in fears or phobias
      • Improve the mood
      • Improve sexual arousal and orgasm
      • Alleviate the symptoms of erectile dysfunction
      • Boost energy and improve exercise performance

Some people also use yohimbine to treat orthostatic hypotension and dry mouth. Traditionally, yohimbe tea was also used as a cough suppressant and to relieve fever symptoms.

      Yohimbe Bark Tea Preparation Instructions

Individuals interested in consuming yohimbe tea can purchase yohimbe bark tea bags, or they can make their own teas at home.

To make your own tea, you will need a spice grinder and raw yohimbe bark. After grinding up the yohimbe bark thoroughly, 6 teaspoons of the powder should be boiled in a pint of water for 10 minutes.

The tea should then be strained, and 500 mg of vitamin C should be added for solubility. If the taste is unpleasant, the addition of honey and cinnamon can help.

Most people notice the effects of the tea within 30 minutes of consumption. It is suggested to consume the tea on an empty stomach for full benefits.

Because the process of preparing your own yohimbe tea at home is lengthy and complicated, you may choose to buy premade tea bags instead.

Yohimbe tea bags are sold by a small number of herbalists and specialty health supplement vendors in brick and mortar retail locations or online.

However, purchase of yohimbe products is banned in several countries, including Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. It can be purchased in the United States from vendors such as Amazon.com.

      Yohimbe Tea Dosage

Standardized recommendations for yohimbe tea dosages do not exist. This is because there can be significant differences in the amount of yohimbine contained in different formulations of yohimbe bark extract.

Yohimbine alkaloids make up between 5 – 15% of the total alkaloid content (6%) in the bark of this tree. 450 mg of yohimbe bark extract may contain as little as 1.5 mg of yohimbine or as much as 23 mg of yohimbine.

For this reason, dosages recommendations are typically stated in mg of yohimbine that a person should consume for their health goals.

For example, to treat anxiety, 10 mg of yohimbine is consumed once each week, usually in conjunction with therapy. For erectile dysfunction, on the other hand, a maximum of 100 mg of yohimbine may be taken in divided doses throughout the day to resolve the problem.

Unfortunately, determining the exact amount of yohimbine present in yohimbe tea can be complicated.

In addition, many of the side effects and complications that occur with the consumption of yohimbine are dose dependent. For this reason, people consuming yohimbe tea should take caution and use no more than they need to achieve the desired effect.

Always start with a low dose and gradually increase it until you have reached your goals. Furthermore, you should always talk to a doctor before you begin the use of any herbal supplement, including yohimbe tea.

      Yohimbe Tea Side Effects

Yohimbine, the active ingredient in yohimbe tea, has the power to produce severe side effects in some individuals. These side effects are more pronounced in high doses.

Some of the serious side effects of yohimbine include:

      • Cardiac arrhythmia
      • Myocardial infarction
      • Seizure
      • Agitation
      • Blood pressure changes
      • Respiratory depression

According to isolated case reports, yohimbine may even be fatal to some consumers when taken in a high dose.

Seek medical attention for any serious side effects you notice while using yohimbe tea or supplements and never take this product without talking to your doctor first.

How to Prevent Yohimbe Side Effects

To reduce the risk of yohimbe tea side effects, it is important to consult with a doctor before using this supplement. According to the Natural Medicines Database, yohimbine has been used safely for up to 10 weeks under medical supervision.

It is important that you do not take this supplement if you use certain pharmaceutical drugs. Yohimbine may interact with some prescription medications, including:

      • Naloxone (major reaction)
      • Phenothiazines
      • Stimulants
      • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors
      • Guanabenz
      • Tricyclic antidepressants

Yohimbine may also interact with some herbs and supplements, including anticoagulant supplements, berberine, ephedra and any supplement that contains caffeine.

While drinking yohimbe tea, avoid consuming foods that contain tyramine, including red wine, fermented meat and aged cheese. You should also avoid foods that contain vasopressors, including chocolate, coffee, cola, tea and fava beans.

If you have certain medical conditions, consuming yohimbe tea may be contraindicated. Talk to your doctor to determine whether yohimbe tea is safe for you if you suffer from any of the conditions below.

      • Benign prostatic hyperplasia
      • Anxiety
      • Angina
      • Heart disease
      • Schizophrenia
      • Post-traumatic stress disorder
      • Liver disease
      • Diabetes
      • Depression
      • Bleeding conditions
      • Kidney disease
      • Hypotension
      • Hypertension

Pregnant women should not consume yohimbe tea unless directed to do so by a medical professional. Yohimbine may be toxic to the fetus in pregnant women, and it may also increase the risk of miscarriage.

Because the risk of side effects is higher in infants and children, yohimbe tea is not generally appropriate for children or breastfeeding women.

nature of some of the constituents I tend to cycle this 7-10 days on and

I love the name - an obvious combo of Levitra and Viagra.

I love the name - an obvious combo of Levitra and Viagra.

What's the advantage of this process to just taking a pill in extract form? Is the boiling and making your own tincture a stronger version?

Generally speaking, standardized extracts are desired over concentrations, but concentrations are (generally) better than "straight" powders.

      - looking at herbal products said to increase testosterone - you will likely find Tribulus repeatedly

      - looking at herbal products said to increase libido - why? Because the quickest way to make a guy HORNY (which is vastly different from just giving him a boner) is to up his testosterone levels

Then I investigated what, if any, factual medical data or test results I could find at places like

. and incidental data at places like the 2 sites I named above.

Absynth (Absinthe) is an extremely popular herbal tincture (see greendevil.com) - wormwood and other herbals are steeped for a couple weeks in - yep - Everclear. It's worth noting that most of the hallucinatory effects of "old school absinthe" were likely due to the toxic additives used to give it its characteristic iridescence. How effective the new stuff is who can say - likely everyone that believes they got really f*cked up from it won't even think it's because they're drinking green-tinted grain alcohol.

      "Testofen is a not-so-well-known herb?"

. and Tongkat (of unspecified extraction) trademarked (. ) "Longjax"

. and a few other incidentals to fill out the product label.

Oh - and they add ZMA

Oh - well, the BB.com store has the actual label:

Note that they DO use a higher conetration of trib

There's one other product that the Internet is currently going gaga over - Maca Root. It's a tuber of Peruvian origin, and it's been reputed to increase libido. I've seen it in capsules of like 500mg, suggested dose of 2 caps daily.

Here's the catch - it's a friggin Peruvian POTATO! Peruvians sometimes eat POUNDS of it a day!

I initially bought a kilo of it to add to my "concoction" - but once I learned that it's relatively worthless there was no point adding useless bulk to my mix. In cases like this research is best before the money is spent! (fortunately for me this stuff was dirt cheap)

      supp. question

If weight loss is what you were looking for in the Yohimbe, ask your doctor if they will prescribe you stimulant weight loss drug. Again, more reliable than trusting some supplement company to harvest some herbs and hope they do some tricks in your body to get the same job done. Just saying, just my opinion.

Get > 6 hours sleep nightly

Stick to a well-planned progressive workout

Don't "only" lift weights (e.g. do intervals and yoga)

      Track your progress (evaluate)

Stay away from alcohol (and "toxic" people)

Get a mentor (you cannot excel alone IMO)

Water, fish oil, creatine, protein powder are the only supps worth a ****.

You're question has probably been answered - your just to stupid too look for it

Types of Teas and Their Health Benefits

From green tea to hibiscus, from white tea to chamomile, teas are chock full of flavonoids and other healthy goodies.

      ">From the WebMD Archives

Regarded for thousands of years in the East as a key to good health, happiness, and wisdom, tea has caught the attention of researchers in the West, who are discovering the many health benefits of different types of teas.

Studies have found that some teas may help with cancer, heart disease, and diabetes; encourage weight loss; lower cholesterol; and bring about mental alertness. Tea also appears to have antimicrobial qualities.

“There doesn’t seem to be a downside to tea,” says American Dietetic Association spokeswoman Katherine Tallmadge, MA, RD, LD. “I think it’s a great alternative to coffee drinking. First, tea has less caffeine. It’s pretty well established that the compounds in tea – their flavonoids – are good for the heart and may reduce cancer.”

Although a lot of questions remain about how long tea needs to be steeped for the most benefit, and how much you need to drink, nutritionists agree any tea is good tea. Still, they prefer brewed teas over bottled to avoid the extra calories and sweeteners.

Here's a primer to get you started.

Health Benefits of Tea: Green, Black, and White Tea

Tea is a name given to a lot of brews, but purists consider only green tea, black tea, white tea, oolong tea, and pu-erh tea the real thing. They are all derived from the Camellia sinensis plant, a shrub native to China and India, and contain unique antioxidants called flavonoids. The most potent of these, known as ECGC, may help against free radicals that can contribute to cancer, heart disease, and clogged arteries.

All these teas also have caffeine and theanine, which affect the brain and seem to heighten mental alertness.

The more processed the tea leaves, usually the less polyphenol content. Polyphenols include flavonoids. Oolong and black teas are oxidized or fermented, so they have lower concentrations of polyphenols than green tea; but their antioxidizing power is still high.

Here's what some studies have found about the potential health benefits of tea:

      • Green tea: Made with steamed tea leaves, it has a high concentration of EGCG and has been widely studied. Green tea’s antioxidants may interfere with the growth of bladder, breast, lung, stomach, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers; prevent clogging of the arteries, burn fat, counteract oxidative stress on the brain, reduce risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, reduce risk of stroke, and improve cholesterol levels.
      • Black tea: Made with fermented tea leaves, black tea has the highest caffeine content and forms the basis for flavored teas like chai, along with some instant teas. Studies have shown that black tea may protect lungs from damage caused by exposure to cigarette smoke. It also may reduce the risk of stroke.
      • White tea: Uncured and unfermented. One study showed that white tea has the most potent anticancer properties compared to more processed teas.
      • Oolong tea: In an animal study, those given antioxidants from oolong tea were found to have lower bad cholesterol levels. One variety of oolong, Wuyi, is heavily marketed as a weight loss supplement, but science hasn’t backed the claims.
      • Pu-erh tea: Made from fermented and aged leaves. Considered a black tea, its leaves are pressed into cakes. One animal study showed that animals given pu-erh had less weight gain and reduced LDL cholesterol.

Health Benefits of Tea: Herbal Teas

Made from herbs, fruits, seeds, or roots steeped in hot water, herbal teas have lower concentrations of antioxidants than green, white, black, and oolong teas. Their chemical compositions vary widely depending on the plant used.

Varieties include ginger, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, hibiscus, jasmine, rosehip, mint, rooibos (red tea), chamomile, and echinacea.

Limited research has been done on the health benefits of herbal teas, but claims that they help to shed pounds, stave off colds, and bring on restful sleep are largely unsupported.

      Here are some findings:

      • Chamomile tea: Its antioxidants may help prevent complications from diabetes, like loss of vision and nerve and kidney damage, and stunt the growth of cancer cells.
      • Echinacea: Often touted as a way to fight the common cold, the research on echinacea has been inconclusive.
      • Hibiscus: A small study found that drinking three cups of hibiscus tea daily lowered blood pressure in people with modestly elevated levels.
      • Rooibos (red tea): A South African herb that is fermented. Although it has flavonoids with cancer-fighting properties, medical studies have been limited.

Health Benefits of Tea: Instant teas

Instant tea may contain very little amounts of actual tea and plenty of sugars or artificial sweeteners. For health’s sake, check out the ingredients on the label.

Can Tea Be Bad for Your Health?

Most teas are benign, but the FDA has issued warnings about so-called dieter’s teas that contain senna, aloe, buckthorn, and other plant-derived laxatives.

The agency also warns consumers to be wary of herb-containing supplements that claim to kill pain and fight cancer. None of the claims is backed by science and some of the herbs have led to bowel problems, liver and kidney damage, and even death.

The FDA cautions against taking supplements that include:

These cautions aside, nutritionists say to drink up and enjoy the health benefits of tea.

“You want to incorporate healthy beverages in your diet on a more regular basis to benefit from these health-promoting properties," says Diane L. McKay, PhD, a Tufts University scientist who studies antioxidants. "It’s not just about the foods; it’s about what you drink, as well, that can contribute to your health."

      Yohimbin – westafrikanische Potenzbaum

      So wirkt Yohimbin
