Songs We Love: Ace Tee, 'Bist Du Down?'

Ace Tee's silky voice takes us straight back to the 1990s. Released at the very end of last year, "Bist Du Down?" (German for "Are You Down?") has made ears perk up internationally in recent weeks. The track boasts a style reminiscent of artists who left us too early — Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes from TLC and Aaliyah — and a lively verse from hip-hop artist Kwam.e. "There are a lot of great artists in Germany right now, but the vibe is a bit dark and we are known mainly for Trap music," Ace Tee told Vogue. "I want to put R&B on the map here and create my own sound."

The music video for "Bist Du Down?" was filmed under train tracks in Hamburg and depicts youth hanging out in fashionable streetwear — baggy jeans, door-knocker earrings — against a graffiti backdrop. It's a visual that truly captures the soul of the era when R&B became mainstream, embodying how music has connected the black diaspora across generations and borders.

An urban hip hop party – H&M presents the ACE TEE x H&M capsule collection

H&M has teamed up with artist Ace Tee to create a new collection, characterised by an urban street style. The collection will be available from 7th September 2017 at hm.com.

Inspired by her personal style, the collection pays homage to the fashion and light-heartedness of the 90Вґs: streetwear fashion that is feminine and cool at the same time. A colour palette of black and white is combined with bright orange and vibrant yellow. Band t-shirts and track pants are paired with a fitted wrap top and a short kimono. A tight body, leggings and a sporty top in camouflage print create an urban look. A short wrap skirt and matching jacket fit the 90вЂ™s double denim look. A fan scarf, colorful sunglasses, choker and socks are the perfect accessories to complete the cool looks.

»Bist du down?« was a wave – and turned into perhaps the biggest pop music sensation of the year 2017. Seemingly out of nowhere, the song went around the world when it arrived, a once-in-a-decade feat for German-language music. But while the click count went through the roof, the creative mind behind it kept its feet on the ground: Ace Tee simply continued to do her thing.

The story of this song, starts years earlier in Eastern Hamburg. In Jenfeld, to be exact, where the sun shines even less than in other parts of Hamburg. There, Ace Tee grew up as the daughter of Ghanaian parents – trilingually and rather traditionally.

Ace Tee herself is just letting it flow into multiple directions at once. On the one hand, there’s her own H&M collection (no biggie?!). On the other hand, there’s her debut album, scheduled for early 2018. Through all of this, she never loses sight of her crew.

»I am so grateful for everything that’s happening right now. I know exactly that there’s also gonna be downs, not just ups. But that means the next up will be three times as high. It just depends on what I’m doing for it.« Ace Tee feels no rush, no pressure.
