Strong espresso coffee or café is a popular drink in Spain, where cafeterias are on every street corner. They sell cafe canario or cafe bombon, which is a popular drink made of coffee and condensed milk.
King Philip V, a Spanish king is believed to have brought coffee to Spain around 1700 and in a few short years, coffee was being drunk all over the country. Now, it is typical to see Spaniards drink café con leche, (coffee with hot milk) for breakfast and shots of espresso the rest of the day -- at mid-morning, to finish the midday meal, in mid-afternoon for their merienda, and with a splash of liquor to end the late night Spanish dinner. That's a lot of coffee!
Coffee with Condensed Milk: A Sweet Treat
Spaniards like sweets, and generally add sugar to any coffee drink. This recipe is a typical coffee drink and is often enjoyed as a dessert. Strong espresso coffee is first poured into a glass, then sweetened condensed milk is added. Whipped cream tops off the glass.
Coffee drinks combined with brandy, rum, or liqueur in Spain are called carajillos, but the basic cafe canario recipe does not have any liquor in it. It is often referred to as café canario because it is a popular drink in the Canary Islands. However, it is also called café bombon because it is sweet and rich-tasting like a dessert. Prepare this coffee to end a special meal instead of dessert, or serve it with cookies for an even sweeter treat. Just remember to use sweetened condensed milk, not evaporated milk.
What You'll Need
- 9 ounces (250 g) heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 8 ounces (250 ml) espresso coffee
- 9 ounces (250 g) condensed milk, whole or skim*
- Several teaspoons cocoa powder
How to Make It
- Whip the cream with a hand mixer (adding vanilla extract) until it forms soft peaks. If making ahead of time, cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap and keep chilled until ready to serve.
- Brew 8 ounces of espresso coffee (using a simple stovetop espresso maker, a machine, or French press).
- Pour the coffee into four small glass cups. Pour the condensed milk into the cups, dividing it equally between the four. Because the condensed milk is heavier, it will sink to the bottom. Top with whipped cream.
- Sprinkle cocoa powder over top and serve with a spoon. Remind your guests to stir the drink well, to mix the sweet, condensed milk, and rich whipped cream into the strong coffee.

A barraquito especial or barraquito completo includes a bit of ground cinnamon (or a whole cinnamon stick), a small piece of lemon peel and a splash of the sweet Spanish liqueur, Licor 43.

What are the advantages?
The PONS Dictionary delivers the reliability of a dictionary which has been editorially reviewed and expanded over the course of decades. Because of the overwhelming data volume, it has not been possible to carry out a manual editorial check on all of these documents. What are our future plans?

Nachdem man aus dem Flugzeug gestiegen ist und die Einreisekontrolle (Pass) hinter sich hat, wird man zu den Gepäckbändern weitergeleitet.
Man wartet auf seinen Koffer und geht damit durch die dahinterliegende Zollkontrolle.
In jedem Fall geben Sie dem Zöllner Ihr weisses Zollformular und entweder winkt er Sie durch oder schaut in Ihren Koffer.
Achten Sie vor allem darauf, dass Sie keine landwirtschaftlichen Produkte wie Keime, Saat, Milcherzeugnisse, Fleisch- oder Fleischprodukte, Butterbrote, Gemüse oder Obst dabei haben. Auch die Lebensmittel, die Sie im Flugzeug bekommen (Obst, Sandwiches, Joghurts, etc.) können Sie nicht einführen.
Landwirtschaftliche Produkte sind wegen Seucheneinschleppungs-Gefahr strikt verboten. Das Sie nichts dergleichen mit sich führen, verbriefen Sie auch auf dem Zollformular durch Ihre Unterschrift.
Handy nicht im Ankunftsbereich benutzen!
Im Ankunftsbereich werden Sie über Lautsprecher und Pictogramme darauf hingewiesen, dass Mobil-Telefone erst nach der Gepäckkontrolle benutzt werden dürfen. Mitnahme von Medikamenten
Beim Mitnehmen von Medikamenten sollte beachtet werden, dass es sich nur um Mengen handeln darf, die dem persönlichen Bedarf während der Reisedauer entsprechen. Verschreibungspflichtige Medikamente können mitgenommen werden, aber man sollte vom Arzt eine Bestätigung mitführen, die die Notwendigkeit der Einnahme bestätigt.
Selbstgebrannte CD's/DVD's?
Man kann sowas mitnehmen, aber es darf natürlich kein unerlaubt kopiertes Material darauf sein, sprich Musik, Software, etc.. Sollte dies entdeckt werden, gibt's klareweise Probleme. Daher rühren die Fragen von unseren Lesern, die gehört haben, dass man keine selbstgebrannten CD's bei sich haben darf. Auch wenn also nichts Verbotenes darauf sein muss, so erwecken solche CD's selbstverständlich immer den Verdacht, dass alles darauf unerlaubt kopiert ist. Richtig? Entscheiden Sie selbst, denn wer ein reines Gewissen hat, braucht sich vermutlich nicht sorgen.
Oft gefragt: Darf ich Kaffee, Tee, Schokolade mit in die USA bringen?
Wie sieht es mit Kaffee, Tee, Schokolade und Brot aus?
Ja, Sie können gebackenes Brot (aber keine belegten Brote!), Süssigkeiten, Kekse sowie gerösteten Kaffee sowie Tee einführen. Das sind unverbindliche Angaben insofern, dass Sie natürlich selber wissen, dass wir mit Süssigkeiten keine kandierten Äpfel oder schokoladen-ummantelte Früchte etc. meinen.
Diese Waren müssen Sie nicht deklarieren und können sich in der grünen Zoll-Warteschlange anstellen. Wenn Sie dann nicht einfach durchgewunken werden, sondern unerwarteterweise doch nochmals gefragt werden, ob Sie etwas dabei haben, dann können Sie ruhig diese Waren nennen, denn es ist nichts Verbotenes.
Manche Reisende gehen auch in diesem Fall bewußt durch die rote (deklarations-pflichtige Waren) Zoll Warteschlange, weil Sie auch dort einfach weitergehn können, nachdem sie sagen, dass sie unsicher wegen Kaffee, Schoko, Brot sind. Warum machen Reisende dies? Weil manchmal die grüne Warteschlange so voll ist, dass es länger dauern würde durchzukommen und die rote Warteschlange meistens leer ist.
Was ist nicht erlaubt?
Allgemein gesprochen sind folgende Produkte für Importeure anmeldepflichtig, d.h. für einen Besucher nicht erlaubt:
Früchte, Gemüse, Pflanzen und pflanzliche Produkte, Fleisch- und Fleischprodukte, Tiere, Milchprodukte.
Bei Tieren sind 'Standard' Haustiere erlaubt: Sie können als Besucher durchaus Ihren Hund oder Ihre Katze mitbringen, Sie haben keine Quarantaine, allerdings benötigen Sie die vollständigen Impfpapiere. Für kommerzielle Tierimporteure gelten andere Bestimmungen und falls Sie andere Haustiere als Hund und Katze mitbringen, dann sollten Sie sich genauestens vorab nach den Bestimmungen informieren.
Weiter unten finden Sie einen Webadressen zur offiziellen Liste erlaubter Agrarprodukte, die vom U.S. Zoll herausgegeben wird. Diese Zoll-Website liefert weitere interessante Information und verweisst darauf, dass, wenn Sie andere Produkte haben, bei denen Sie nicht sicher sind, Sie sich an das zuständige U.S. Konsulat in Ihrem Heimatland wenden sollen.
