Eat, drink: Germany
Adventures in Germanic fare.
Caro: what the Muckefuck?
Trust the Germans to give an utterly benign foodstuff a totally racy name (even if the name is only racy “auf Englisch”).
The drink Caro, also known as Muckefuck, is a soluble coffee substitute created by Nestl é for post-war West Germany when real coffee was hard to come by. Similar iterations of the drink were consumed in former East Germany, where real coffee beans were often scarce.
The name Muckefuck most probably comes from the French ‘mocca faux’, or fake mocca.
The original Caro packaging included the catchy product description “Kaffeeersatzmischungsextrakt”: coffee replacement mixture extract. You say it Kaffee-Ersatz-Mischungs-Extrakt, by the way. The things Germans can say in one enormous word when we need four…
Caro packaging in 1954 (source: Nestlé Deutschland on YouTube).
You make yourself a Muckefuck like you would make an instant coffee: powder in mug, add boiling water and milk.
Germans refer to Caro and its fake coffee cousins as “kaffeeähnliches” (coffee-like) drinks. Though coffee Caro is most definitely not. Made from barley, malt, chicory and rye, the only thing it has in common with coffee is that it is a brown coloured, plant-based drink. There it ends.
As a person who gets crazy and sleepless from too much caffeine, I decided to give Caro a try. And I like it! Caro is toasty, nutty and warming. Because it lacks the bitterness that real coffee has, I tend to not even need a sweetener.
While the odd nickname seems to have fallen out of favour of late, Muckefuck is still loved Germany-wide, though I’m not entirely sure by whom (besides me). It is not cool, but it does not seem to care. It’s still on every supermarket shelf, in every home, and – mysteriously – in every office kitchen. Though paticularly there, it’s not often seen to be consumed (except by me, the shameless foreigner).
Low Carb: Kaffee Erlaubt?
2. Natürliche Wachmacher ohne Koffein-Crash
Kommentare:
Hallo Michael, toller Blog, schaue hier immer wieder sehr gerne rein!

7 Coffee Substitutes That Will Help You Kick the Caffeine Habit
- By: Lindsay Patton
- January 20, 2015
- About
I remember my first caffeine withdrawal. After a week straight of binging on Pepsi during spring break, I came home and went straight into cold turkey mode. My teenage body wasn’t ready to handle the 60-to-0 caffeine decline and I experienced my first caffeine withdrawal symptom: A migraine so bad, I went to bed and missed the second half of my favorite show, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” This was also 2003, where there was no On Demand, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, what have you. I threw up my white flag and learned the hard way what caffeine can do to a person’s body.
Twelve years later and I drink two cups of coffee per day, needing something to get my day going, but at the same time terrified of withdrawals. There are many people like me, afraid to go off coffee cold turkey because of the looming withdrawal symptoms. There are also some people who want to kick caffeine whether it be for health reasons, a pregnancy, for lent or if they just don’t want to be a slave to the alkaloid anymore.
But what if you want to wean yourself off caffeine but love coffee?
There are a number of coffee substitutes that are more than just your boring ol’ decaf. Here are a few you could request from your local grocery store or find online.
Chai Teeccino with Coconut Creamer | Image credit: Wikimedia Commons
If you want something simple and to the point, Pero is your substitute. Made with malted barley, chicory and rye, you can order jars or tins online. Pero is instant coffee, so you just need to add water, heat it up and you’re good to go.
Teeccino is a blend of grains, herbs, fruits and nuts that are roasted, ground and brewed just like coffee, but without the caffeine. The brand boasts its health benefits, from having zero acid in the product to potassium in the mixture. You can get this substitute at teeccino.com, where you can also find a two-week program to help wean you off caffeine without the painful withdrawal symptoms.
This award-winning concoction is not only caffeine free, but environmentally conscious. It’s certified organic and GMO-free. It’s herbal-based, which includes immunity-enhancing organic ayurvedic herbs. Additional ingredients include roasted barley, chicory root and rye. You can order Ayurvedic Roast through ayurvedicroast.com.
Here’s something you probably weren’t expecting to read: a coffee substitute made with dandelion roots. That’s just part of what makes up Dandy Blend, however. Other ingredients include beet and chicory roots, as well as barley and rye. This brand is known for its sweeter taste, due to the naturally occurring fructose in the ingredients. The company also boasts that Dandy Blend costs less than seven cents per cup. The website has a store locator so you know where to pick it up.
Like Pero, Cafix Crystals is instant, so all you need to do is stir a spoonful or two into hot water. By itself, it only has five calories per serving.
New Life Coffee produces this substitute made with roasted non-GMO soybeans. Intended to be brewed and served as any cup of coffee would, the beverage has hints of chocolate and vanilla.
Another instant product, Kaffree Roma is made from grain and skips the caffeine.

So sorry for the ones who love coffee and cannot drink it for health reasons: for me, there is no way I will substitute coffee, for now. I hope the doctor never tells me to do so! :(((
Thank you for sharing.
