Best Coffee in Frankfurt

German speciality coffee scene would usually be associated with the cities of Berlin and Hamburg, but does anyone know about the developing scene in Frankfurt? One of the major international airports in Germany brings coffee drinkers from across the globe and that is only one of the reasons why Frankfurt might easily become the rising coffee star in the near future.

The seven featured cafes and roasters in this article should not be missed on your trip to Frankfurt.

Hoppenworth & Ploch

Matthias Hoppenworth and Julian Ploch, founders of Hoppenworth & Ploch roastery and café, opened their door already 7 years ago. Two friends who used to geek out about coffee and espresso machines sharing the dorms at the Goethe University residence in Frankfurt, took up the challenge of opening a café in the newly built part of the campus. Of course the coffee quality was not as good as it is now and so the roasting became the next step in influencing the quality of a cup their customers can get.

Friedberger Landstraße is where the café & roastery is situated and where we headed first. We chose to taste a V60-brewed honey processed Las Nubitas from El Salvador as one of the four coffees on offer, opting for an Amkmeni cappuccino afterwards. Tanzania is the first country of origin that the roastery is trying to establish a direct trade relationship with. “I am going to Tanzania in October again and I would like to meet new farmers over there,” explains Matthias when we get to discuss further their plans in this country of origin.

You can enjoy your cup of coffee relaxing in the large front window that brings a lot of light into the café or sit at a big communal table with a view on both the bar and the roasting area within the space. On the bar, 3 Group La Marzocco Linea and Mahlkoenig Twin are used for espresso extraction and Mahlkoening Guatemala grinder and Marco Über Boiler for filter coffee that offers only one method of brewing – V60.

If you have already learned all the details about their coffee from one of the enthusiastic baristas, you can have a read in one of the books from the shelf of a small library. We picked Coffee Story: Ethiopia that was personally signed by the owner of NinetyPlus, Joseph Brodsky. “Joseph visited our café and we even bought some of his coffee. It’s rather expensive for the local market though,” explains Matthias. Standart magazine that featured the story of Hopplo as the common nick name for this place goes is placed proudly on the shelf too.

Friedberger Landstraße 86, 60316 Frankfurt am Main

Tortenengel

Surprisingly, probably the best coffee equipment in Frankfurt can be found in a cake shop. Tortenengel (Angel pies) was opened in March 2015 by Ben Engel and serves their customers delicious cakes and equally excellent coffee roasted by Swedish Koppi. “I am not a barista I am a baker,” comments humbly Ben while brewing our coffee.

Kees Van Der Westen Mirage Duette Idrocompresso, Mahlkoenig EK43, Marco Über Boiler, Nuova Simonelli Mythos sound like a pretty angelic set up to us and Ben really tries to match the high quality of his baking with coffee and using the right equipment is a way to do it.

After we enjoyed a cup of Columbian coffee together with two most popular cakes on offer we stumbled upon an interesting part of the interior – a strange looking grinder in the shape of an EK43. “It is a grinder dating back to 1963 when my grandfather used it to grind grains. We tried but it does not work well for coffee,” explains Ben before we leave his café.

Rotlintstraße 48, 60316 Frankfurt am Main

Hoppenworth & Ploch (campus café)

It is at the campus where it all started 7 years ago and the contrast between the two cafés is worth mentioning. The roastery is built as a showroom where you can really explore how each coffee should taste and how to prepare them well. The campus café is built for high volume.

Think of a university canteen with 4 group La Marzocco Linea adjusted with pedal control steamer and two batch brew machines and quality coffee. Even during the summer holidays there was a constant stream of students requesting coffee or waffles, apparently a popular student meal.

Marcel, one of the first baristas that started working in Hopplo about 5 years ago showed us the original menu. Nowadays the items and the prices bring a smile to everyone’s face, but the menu is kept on the wall as a reminder of Hoppenworth & Ploch’s beginnings.

The company serves their coffees at the local markets and events as well. “We built the coffee carts ourselves and even got inspired by Gwilym Davies for one of them. We still use it but we have built a new one,” explains Elisabeth Waczek, barista and manager at Hoppenworth & Ploch.

Siolistraße 7, 60323 Frankfurt am Main

Rashid El Ofairi, an engineer turned barista and also the café owner, opened Aniis in April 2015 in the quickly developing area of the city next to the European Central Bank. Aniis’ house coffee comes from JB aka Johannes Bayer in Munich and you can choose from 2 coffees for espresso and, depending on the season, about 5 coffees for filter. We followed Rashid’s advice to try the natural La Perla from Costa Rica and then we watched Rashid’s precise pouring technique that, as stated in the menu, took exactly 2 minutes 10 seconds.

Coffee is served in cups by the English craft ceramics manufacturer Steelite that perfectly match the atmosphere of the café. It has its roots in Rashid’s home country, Morocco, but with a modern twist in the design of the walls and the furniture.

Aniis is presented as an open space for the coffee culture to grow in and it happened to be true as we found ourselves in a random conversation with two local coffee enthusiasts and home baristas while waiting for our last coffee.

Hanauer Landstraße 82, 60314 Frankfurt am Main

Kaffeewerk Espressionist

For the widest selection of coffees in Frankfurt you should head to Kaffeewerk Espressionist, the cafe that celebrates 4 years of existence in September. Every day, baristas choose 4 coffees for espresso to fill the hoppers of their grinders with and the selection changes every single day. Similarly with filter coffee, there is up to 11 coffees with the majority represented by Quijote Kaffee from Hamburg and JB from Munich.

Esther, the barista of “Espressionist”, served us a cold drip from JB’s Colombia Nariňo – the perfect choice for a hot summer afternoon – and shared her view on the development of the local coffee scene: “Frankfurt is an international hub and people come here from all around the world and of course they bring their coffee culture with them”. There are two other cafés operated by the same owner Yulia Yanyuk in this area of the city – nearby the Skyline Plaza and Messe Frankfurt.

Europa-Allee 29, 60327 Frankfurt am Main

OHEIM means uncle in German and the experience of the uncle bringing only the best gifts when visiting his family is the experience that Julia and Christian wanted to emulate at their café. Carefully curated selection of products to buy creates the major part of the café’s interior so you can be sure that you will find the last minute present for your loved ones here.

OHEIM was one of the first cafés serving speciality coffee in Frankfurt three years ago. They always serve one house coffee that they choose and buy themselves and it is then roasted by Wolfram Sorg. During our visit, they were running out of their house coffee no. IV, single origin from Costa Rica, and were choosing a new coffee for autumn and winter. Colombian Lus Auxilios roasted by Espressofabriek in Amsterdam was a guest roast of that time being.

Oppenheimer Landstraße 48, 60596 Frankfurt am Main

Backyard Coffee

In order to visit Backyard Coffee Roasters you need to take a 20 minute car ride to the outskirts of Frankfurt. The former German barista champion, Wolfram Sorg, placed his roastery and training centre as well as BJJ gym (yes, you read it well – Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) into a warehouse in Nieder-Eschbach.

Wolfram roasts his coffee on an orange Giesen machine and he supplies cafés nationally, such as Coffee Nerd in Heidelberg or Godshot in Berlin. We got to try an espresso from Ethiopia Kochere and a single origin coffee called O’Malley, currently featuring Colombian coffee.

We also met Eric Wolf, another former German Barista Champion who together with Wolfram and Thomas Schweiger creates the trio behind the coffee training and consulting company called Coffee Minds. All of them are barista champions and certified barista trainers, providing good resources to anybody who wants to learn about coffee.

Georg-Büchner-Straße 27D, Frankfurt am Main

Ales Pospisil is the co-founder of European Coffee Trip and also one of the main contributors. He strives for the most objective report on the European coffee scene.

Kaffee und Kuchen in Frankfurt

Yes, I know the image of sitting down to coffee and cakes in the afternoon, a German and Austrian tradition especially, has the feel of something your grandparents do. You totter over to the table in your Sunday best and linger for lack of anything better to do in retirement. But soft! Doesn’t a ritual built around good coffee and delicious pastries deserve more respect than that? As a matter of fact, it does.

The sweet spot for Kaffee und Kuchen (literally: coffee and cake) is between 3 pm and 5 pm in Frankfurt, with Saturdays and above all Sundays being the most popular days. If you really want to run through the routine, have a good brunch (see here for some choices) and then take in a museum, and have a Sunday stroll before re-energizing with some caffeine and sugar. This winter being rather mild, outdoor seating is not one of the question, especially when you’re taking in calories and hot beverages.

A few tips. If you order eine Tasse Kaffee, you will generally get a pretty compact cup, never enough for me. Try ein KГ¤nnchen, a pitcher that holds two healthy-sized cups. There are some classic cakes (ask for ein StГјck – one piece) and plenty of seasonal ones. Since Oct. 1 there has been a smoking ban in the state, Hesse, where Germany lies, so your cakes won’t tast like a kiss from a nicotine fiend.

Take a deep breath before pronouncing your order for a Schwarzwälderkirschtorte, a Black Forest Cake. Chocolate cake, whipped cream and cherries underpin this one, a dominant force in pastry in southwestern Germany.

The Sacher Torte originated at the Hotel Sacher in Vienna but is now almost universally available. The hard chocolate exterior reveals, well, more chocolate, and if it had been invented by a North American, it would have been called “Death by Chocolate.” Recipes can differ, and woe to the chef who serves a deviant Sacher Torte to a true believer.

The Austrians also gave the world the Linzer Torte, an almost gingerbread-y cake with raspberry preserves in it. A small piece does just fine, as this is a hearty one, perfect on a snowy day.

Places to go …

CafГ© Laumer is pretty close to the stereotypical granny cafГ©, with the marble tabletops and wooden chairs. Down the street from Frankfurt’s gorgeous Alte Oper (Old Opera), CafГ© Laumer also appears to do a pretty decent business-Kuchen trade, with bankers swapping stock tips over a Sacher. Bornheimer Landstr. 67. Subway U6 and U7 to the Westend station.

CafГ© Siesmayer is entirely contemporary in architecture and dГ©cor, with a massive selection of cakes where it’s hard to go wrong. Anything with a coffee component (e.g. cappucino cream) will please the taste buds immensely. Tour buses sometimes fill CafГ© Siesmayer to the brim because it abuts the Palmengarten, a beautiful botanical garden that can be the place for your walk, before or after. Siesmayerstr. 59. Subway U6 and U7 to the Westend station.

Wacker’s Kaffee has several locations in Frankfurt. Their cake selection is limited, but high-quality. Dynamite coffee selection as well, so make sure to take home a pound or two. The one located near the Bornheim Mittee subway station offers the cozy if sometimes enervating experience of the ultra-crowded neighborhood cafГ© where a lot of people know each other. Three locations in Frankfurt. My favorite is at Berger Strasse 184. Subway U4 to Bornheim Mitte.

The Deutsches Architekturmuseum (German Architecture Museum) does spring to mind when it comes to coffee and cake, and that’s a pity for those not in the know. A good selection can be had, ditto a view of the Main River. From there, you are in striking distance of many of Frankfurt’s best museums, including the one where you are sitting. Schaumainkai 43. Subway and Trams to Willy-Brandt-Platz, walk across the bridge.

My fond hopes would be for some nouvelle approaches to Kafee und Kuchen in the future, not only in Frankfurt. For some time you have been able to get plenty of coffee variations – espresso, cappucino, latte etc. – though nothing on the order of Starbucks. Now I’d love to see German pastry chefs ditch tradition while applying their impressive skills to cake innovation.

How about a pumpkin cranberry torte in the fall? Any chance of scoring raspberry chocolate during the summer months? Chocolate and peanut butter? And how about the cafГ© dГ©cor? I began this blog entry with a justifiable appeal to lay aside predjudice. But I’d love to be surprised.

Maybe these places already exist. I welcome the advice!

Comments are no longer being accepted.

This sounds GREAT! I was a GI in Germany in the 60’s (FULDA) and am planning to visit again. This will be on my list

This entry alone is enough to make me book a ticket to Frankfurt right now where my internationally cool son lives. Are these places family-friendly?

No need to only go to Frankfurt, as any and all and every German city, even the smallest have their decent Cafe(s)

Frankfurt: Exploring the gorgeous German City

Though most tourists are only familiar with the city's airport, Frankfurt is fast emerging as a destination in its own capacity. Here are the eight ways you can explore this culturally and ethnically diverse German city.

EXPLORE OLD TOWN REBUILT AFTER WORLD WAR II

While most buildings in the historic district were destroyed during World War II, many of them have been meticulously rebuilt.Romerburg, the central square, is home to its Rathaus (City Hall) which dates back to1405, and is flanked by half-timbered,gabled houses.

The city has a special project called the Dom Romer project, where many buildings are being reconstructed as exact replicas of their medieval counterparts.Don't miss the majestic cathedral of St Bartholomeus where kings and emperors of the Holy Roman empire were crowned in the 17th and 18th centuries.Paulskirche or St Paul's Church hosted the first German National Assembly.

RAISE A TOAST WITH APPLE WINE

The cozy Sachsenhausen neighbourhood with its cobbled lanes and medieval architecture is the city's pub district serving the local signature drink - apple wine with a tart taste. This area escaped the bombing to a large extent so has a lot of original architecture, well-preserved.

Today there are more than a hundred apple-wine pubs and a dozen fountains including the Frau Rauscher Brunnen fountain where a lady holding a jug of apple wine, keeps spitting water at regular intervals, on pedestrians.

Apple wine became popular in the 16th century, when local Riesling grapes suffered from fungus, so people tried making wine from apples instead. Apple wine is poured from special blue and white jugs, called Bembels.

VISIT ITS NUMEROUS MUSEUMS

Take a walk along the river Main on the 'Museum Embankment' lined by some of the best museums in the country, housed in classic buildings. Among them is the German Film Museum and the world-famous Stadel Museum, which focuses on seven centuries of art (has masters like Rembrandt,Picasso and Monet). Don't miss a visit to the Museum of Architecture, which also gives you a glimpse into the problem of housing for immigrants.

Outside this area the other museum really worth a visit is the Senckenberg Museum which houses fossils, dinosaur skeletons and Egyptian mummies.

NEVER MISS A VELO TAXI TOUR

A unique way to experience the city is to take a velo taxi tour with a driver-cum-guide. I took a tour with this electric bike taxi that took me along green spaces by the River, some striking modern architecture and then the Old Town as well as the apple wine taverns. It whizzes down pavements and streets, even by the riverside.

The guide gave me a good insight into local culture and architecture and would recommend this as a good orientation to the city.

A one hour tour costs 38 euros (about Rs 2,800).http://frankfurt.velotaxi.de/en

GET A TASTE OF ITS CAFE CULTURE

The German tradition of Kaffee and Kuchen is firmly entrenched in Frankfurt. Today there are a lot of new cafes serving specialty coffees with confectionery.

Take a tour of the city's cafes from family-run businesses like Wacker's Kaffee in Kornmarkt and Cafe Karin (near Goethe's house) to quirky cafes like IImori Patiseries where Japanese style snacks as well as cakes , tarts, and macarons are served with great coffee.

GET A MAJESTIC VIEW FROM THE TOP

The city has some striking and modernistic architecture with a bunch of towering skyscrapers perched on the banks of the river , dubbed Germany's"Manhattan. "

To get a view of the city's skyline, head to the 650-feet high platform of the Main Tower and get a sweeping panoramic view of Frankfurt's skyline - the green spaces, the river and the high rises.Look at the shining facades of the twin towers of Deutsche Bank called Debit and Credit by the locals, the striking Euro Tower (home of the European Central Bank), and the headquarters of Commerz bank, designed by Norman Foster.

INDULGE IN RETAIL THERAPY

Explore the bustling pedestrian street called Zeil, with a line-up of chic boutiques and department chains.Don't miss the spectacular 10-floor shopping centre, the "ZeilGalerie" with a vaulted glass structure and cutting-edge architecture.

To get a peek into local food culture visit the local indoor market called Kleinmarkthalle, with more than 150 stalls selling a wide range of fresh foods, cheeses and local produce.

You should definitely pick up typical souvenirs like bottles of apple wine, bembels - pitchers used for apple wine - and local mustard. Another good buy is fashionable Birkenstock footwear.

GO BACK IN TIME AT GOETHE'S HOUSE

The famous writer and scientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethewas born in Frankfurt in 1749. His house in Hirschgraben was destroyed in the Second World War, and was lovingly rebuilt from its original plans.

Many rooms are furnished with baroque pieces, porcelain and art: explore the old fashioned kitchen, music room, a library, the writer's desk and even the room where the author was born.

Don't miss the Puppet theatre that was presented to Goethe when he was four years old and inspired him
