Learning the Hard Way: Things I Learned From Failure

Before Bonaverde, there was Kaffee Toro, the first incarnation of our vision to build the world’s first roast-grind-brew coffee machine. It failed. Crashed and burned, in fact, leaving only bankruptcy and unmet potential in its ashes. To be blunt, the experience was shit.

I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Well, yes, maybe a theoretical world where I knew everything I know now then. (And, of course, the opportunity to avoid any chaos I caused for others along the way). That, however, is impossible. Kaffee Toro, for all the destruction and devastation it brought into my life, was a crash course in start-up building. Without the lessons I learned from that first attempt, Bonaverde wouldn’t exist. For that, I will always be eternally grateful.

However, to save you a bit of trouble, here’s a run down of the syllabus for the section of the course entitled “Investors and Funding 101.”

Lesson 1: Too many baristas spoil the coffee.

I started Kaffee Toro with €50,000 of my own funds, thinking it would be best to bootstrap until I had something substantial to show investors. By the time we raised our first funding, we had a pitch deck, prototypes, team, ideas, website, name and a little IP. We still only raised €80,000 at an €800,000 valuation. It was a start, but not enough to truly fuel the company. So we did more rounds, bringing in another million in VC funding.

We also acquired 15 more investors. Fifteen people at the table. Fifteen opinions. Fifteen agendas. To add madness to mayhem, every investor had joined the project at a different time. Start-ups evolve. They pivot. To do otherwise is an exercise in futility and foolishness (but we’ll talk about that in a second). Still, fifteen people, sitting around the table, all with a different vision of the company, all arguing for a different concept, resulted in a completely unproductive situation. My puzzle became to get all of these people, all of whom I was accountable to as investors, on the same page.

We stagnated. Fifteen equal forces pushing against each other will go in no direction at all. I spent endless energy trying to defy this basic law of physics. Kaffee Toro stood still. Knowing we needed to move, I asked for €50,000 to run a Kickstarter campaign. With half the group in different books, never mind the same page, the money never materialized.

At some point, moving backwards becomes better than not moving at all. I filed for bankruptcy the same month as my wedding. We wouldn’t celebrate properly for another year and a half. In the meantime, I raised money from my incredibly encouraging friends and family, and started from scratch, this time knowing better than to let too many baristas behind my espresso bar.

Lesson 2: No coffee plant thrives without the support it needs to grow.

As W. Edwards Deming put it, “It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.” To employ a common witticism at the risk of sounding cliché, start-ups are like sharks. If they stop moving they die.

When you plant a seed, it doesn’t grow up into a bigger seed. All the brilliance of the blooms to come is contained in that little capsule, but it needs to be given the room to grow into its true potential, evolving from an unassuming seed into the awe-inspiring natural beauty of a flower. All of this evolution requires support: regular watering, fertile soil, and plenty of sunlight. Otherwise all you have is a seed petrifying, unrealized, buried under the earth.

As Kaffee Toro struggled to sprout, left bereft of sun and water by investors sinking heels into the soil, refusing to change, I came to a startling realization. There was a major flaw in the original concept. A green coffee market didn’t exist. There is a second lesson within this lesson: You can’t push things into market when there is no market. You have to create that market. You must create a pull to market.

For that you need some credibility and demonstrable demand. You also need valuable partners. And those you get when they believe there is a market.

We had a plan to build the credibility, the market and the demand. What we didn’t have were the supportive partners. Kaffee Toro sat on the heating plate until it was too stale to drink. So we dumped out the pot and started fresh. New partners saw the potential and came onboard, invested their labor and created the project.

The result was Bonaverde. Our team is small and cohesive, united in vision and working to evolve that vision together. Learning from past mistakes, we’ve tended it with care and given it plenty of room to grow and change. Entirely crowdfunded, we’re accountable to no one but the Coffee Changers, which in my mind is as it should be. After all, as those who use and believe in Bonaverde, our crowdfunding backers have the most authentic investment in our project. Their genuine support has been invaluable.

The best lesson, however, has been this:

Through it all, despite every frustration and difficulty and the culminating disaster that defined Kaffee Toro in the end, the idea never lost its luster. I remain as passionate now about this project as I was when I first started developing it so many years ago. I believe it’s time to change the world of coffee.

After all we’ve been through, I know now that belief is absolutely unshakeable.

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.

Have a question?

Justin Wardill just now

Got an email today after asking about Australia shipping confirming anyone outside of US or EU cannot get the machine and only a refund. They can't be stuffed posting it here, good job.

And if you didn't get the form before the 1st of December have to wait till February.

Rob Goodwin about 10 hours ago

I was told this morning that we'll get multiple roast profile cards. I hope the CS representative was correct. I also suggested they communicate through a backer Facebook page or their main Facebook page on tech issues. The coffee concierge problems felt like another slap in the face after I spent a few hours last night assuming I was doing something wrong going through an endless cycle of Facebook messenger mishaps.

Justin about 12 hours ago

@Scott, I agree. Personally I would want a roast only (different profiles) and brew / grind cards since I've always let my roasted coffee rest. However, I'm in this project for an interesting experience, not to solve all my coffee problems :) I'm ok working with what we can for now.

I would love to see this company succeed (without the RFID stuff) unless they want to sell the machine at / below cost (more like the Keurig model). But of course, it's up to them to create a business plan that will work out. I'm very curious to see what the Berlin V2 is going to look like.

Scott A. Smith about 15 hours ago

@Justin, the cards have a medium roast profile permanently stored on them. If that's the only roast you'll ever want to do then the card may indeed be a solution for your 3G connectivity issue. However, if you want to do a dark, or even a medium-dark roast, you'll be out of luck unless your Berlin can communicate with Bonaverde's back-end. :(

I really hope my own "pouch" issue is not a 3G Connectivity issue; that'd make my machine completely useless since I only want to do medum-dark to dark roasts.

At a minimum, Bonaverde should send us multiple cards for different roast profiles.

Justin about 16 hours ago

I am / was also having the issue with "Problem with the pouch, please fix it and start again.", speaking with a very helpfully support rep over Facebook messenger we thought it may be related to 3G reception since they never saw my machine come online on the back end.

I took my machine on a ride in the car and found a place with excellent cell reception. After powering it up in that location, I was able to control the machine through Coffee Concierge.

Obviously, that won't work at my home, but I was told that the "Coffee Changer" RIFD card coming does not require 3G reception and should work just fine.

I know many people have had problems reaching support, but once you get through, the experience had been good. I'll post again once I receive the RFID card.

Aaron Schwid 2 days ago

They didn’t send me any coffee with the rfid, the concierge doesn’t work, and it doesn’t come close to fitting anywhere in my kitchen. Also no one responds to their “chat” customer service feature and there is no other way to get in touch. Planning on posting an “Office Space” video of me smashing the machine. What a joke.

Rob Goodwin 2 days ago

So. 1.2kg is not 6.6kg of coffee, the concierge doesn't work, and I got no coffee filters.

Scott A. Smith 3 days ago

Update to my previous post.

I contacted support and got a response within an hour. Apparently there was something wrong with the concierge back-end and they got it sorted pretty quickly, allowing me to enter my IME number and proceed to the next steps.

Unfortunately, that's where I hit another roadblock. When I try to run a brew cycle, the machine reports:

"Problem with the pouch, please fix it and start again."

It also reports a similar error if I try to roast only:

"Pouch is not ready, please fix it and start again."

According to support, the machine doesn't realize that I've used the concierge service and is looking for a scan from the bean pouch. They're aware of the issue and are working on a firmware update for the machines, but it could be "a week or so" before the update gets pushed out.

I'm frustrated and disappointed. but, at this point, I'm willing to wait it out.

On the positive side, Liz in support has been quite helpful and has responded within an hour of each of my questions.

Scott A. Smith 3 days ago

Got the machine. Looks OK. Definitely taller than I was expecting. The Carafe feels super-cheap.

There are ZERO pouches/filters with RFID tags. Instead, there are four backs of green beans with Facebook Messenger codes on them and instructions to scan the code with my Facebook Messenger app. Scanned the code and was greeted by "Kike" the Barista:

"Hi Scott. I am Kike, you personal barista. I can help you make the perfect cup of coffee. Do you already own a Bonaverde Berlin?"

Really? "Kike"? I do not think that I shall be showing this process to my Rabbi.

So I select "Yes" in answer to Kike's question and. nothing. I type "Hello" and that exact cycle repeats. I type "Cancel", same thing. "Make Coffee".. same thing. Kike will ask me if I own the Berlin and then just stop responding.

I am with you Kevin. I am up to 10 pages of support tickets unresolved. I double them for everyone closed and merged and unresolved. If you hit your hourly limit directly in ZenDesk just email support to add more. Best of luck.

After opening countless support tickets and sending messages to every address I could find I finally heard back from their L2 support. This is the message I received regarding refunds.

Thanks for your email. We're sorry to dissapoint, but we'll be batch processing ALL refunds submitted up until this point on 20th December.

We appreciate your patience.

The Bonaverde TeaM"

Kevin Reierson 4 days ago

I have submitted over 50 support tickets to their site which they marked as solved and then merged with a different users tickets. I have been posting on their facebook page as well and sent Hans and Bonaverde private messages on Facebook. I have yet to get anything back except for the same excuse filled canned responses about Bonaverde initiating all the refunds but I will continue to harass them.

Jeff M. 5 days ago

As Dan stated, the only way to get a refund is to become a thorn.

Email your requests to:

Also submit your refund request on this form:

Lastly, some of your emails will create tickets. Sign in here to create directly and more importantly when they mark them solved with a canned response, you can reopen the tickets.

Keep going until your refund is sent.

Justin 5 days ago

Did anybody ever have and solve the "Problem with the coffee pouch. Please fix it ans start again." message when using the Coffee Concierge?

Kevin Reierson 5 days ago

Just when you think it couldn't get any worse it does. These people are a joke and should be ashamed to continue this farce.

Tim Fensham 6 days ago

Bonaverde have just advised me that anyone outside EU/USA will NOT get their machine and needs to fill out a refund form. They claim they were unable to have machines certified outside EU/USA regions.

If you are one of these affected, please bombard them with emails. or just demand an instant refund. It seems this may be one of the only ways to get your money back.

The following is the email I received:

We thank you so much for being on our journey to change coffee! We have greatly appreciated your patience as we have worked to bring out the best product we could to as many people as possible. It is therefore with great regret that we face a situation where we must cancel orders in markets outside the United States (US) and the European Union (EU).

Unfortunately, due to operational constraints and complexity, we could not get our machines certified under official approbation laws outside the US and EU, and thus are forbidden from sending products into other markets. While our intent is to broaden our reach, we have no date we can promise for when we will be able to do. As such, we will refund you the amount originally paid for a machine and/or coffee.

As we do not keep any credit card information on file, all refunds must go through PayPal.

Click here to complete the Bonaverde Refund Form.

You will need the email address associated with your PayPal account to complete this form. If you do not have a PayPal account, it is free to sign up and there are no fees for receiving the funds. Please visit www.paypal.com for more information.

Bonaverde will initiate all refunds. Requests made by individuals from PayPal to Bonaverde will not be processed. As we are also in the midst of shipping machines to thousands of backers, it may take several weeks for us to process refunds so please be patient. Refund requests must be made through the above form, please do not reply to this email to make your request.

#7 Wie kann ich investieren?

-> You missed it. Schade. Wir melden uns wann, wo, was, wieviel.

#8 Wie arbeitet man für Bonaverde?

-> Dafür brauchst Du eine enorm hohe Stressresistenz. Mach das nicht. Totaler Irrsinn.

Es geht um Kaffee, after all.

Lieben Gruß aus Berlin

10. How do I use IoT digital Bonaverde?

We have waited so long for it! Now it's only halfway done. But anyway! It actually works quite well, of course, it's only in BETA, but so we are: concierge.bonaverde.com is a messenger bot, so it's a kind of artificial intelligence hidden in Facebook Messenger, so you can intuitively click through the conversation flow. Doesn't have to write or do anything, just click. And then the machine roasts the right coffee. Or only grinds without roasting or sets an alarm clock. And so on. You don't trust Facebook? Good. Neither do we. That's why it's not Facebook but "only" their Messenger. And it can be used anonymously. The only messenger probably. And he knows nothing about you. Not even who operates the machine. We don't know that either. And that's a good thing. That's why we are so proud of the Cellular component: roasting coffee has never been easier (: Without kidding: Hacking a Cellular Net is much more difficult than hacking a Wifi Net. Trust us, your data is more secure at Deutsche Telekom than in your router. And that is exactly what we exploit. So if you have a smartphone or use WiFi at home, you can also accept our Privacy Policy.

Overall, you see, we actually have an answer for everyone and all questions. We just don't get to send it to you. That's why this email. Many questions will also be answered via support.bonaverde.com and you can, as always, get the call back service from our CEO and founder Hans Stier: call.bonaverde.com he is (actually) always happy to hear about (almost) all about (nearly) all the information you need.

Lieber Benjamin, lieber Coffee Changer, Investor, Supporter, lieber Kunde.

Also füll Deinen Link aus! US Backers oder Germany Backers oder Rest of World Backers

Someone said Pay As You Go? Subscription Boxes? YES! All das und noch viel mehr. Aber eben erst demnächst. Wann? Keine Ahnung.

Attached to you name. All Access eben. Unser 650k USD Kickstarter Stretch Goal. Just for you.

This is what I just got from BV regarding my request for a refund and for a return label of the machine they sent me although knowing I declined the privacy policy and did want a refund. To cut it short: the are not answering support requests any more.

further reading below by BV:

Dear Benjamin‍, dear

Coffee Changer, investor, supporter, customer.

Bonaverde drives again a new looping loop on the roller coaster ride. Even after a long wait it sounds so close it was so difficult to deliver all machines to all crowd supporters. With a small team of just four people we are working day and night on everything you can see online and offline. No magic Heinzelmännchen. No crazy resources. Just passion. We want to accomplish what we have promised you and we fight for it with all our heart and soul. But we too are only human beings and today we surrender: before the sheer flood of your enthusiasm! We say THANK YOU and could be in our arms with joy. I am so happy that the machine, that our invention is so well received by you. Nearly three thousand households roast coffee in Germany, many of you fresh every morning, many often in one day. What we just didn't see coming is banal but somehow an honest statement of our innocence: You all need coffee. Out of sheer naiveté we took one armor per day per machine and wanted to feed you with it. It quickly became clear that on average it is more than three times as much. The record is thirteen. We can get angry and cry. We can rejoice and cheer. The bottom line is that we now have to work hard. And that's what we try here at the heart of the coffee centre: We want to deliver! Coffee! Badges! Air filter! Coffee filter! New machines. No doubt about it, we just got started. What we can't do today, however, is to answer the same questions over and over again. We simply don't know a better answer: It all takes longer. We're sorry, but that's the way it is. All your open support tickets in our Customer Support Desk will now be marked as SOLVED. We are fully aware that we didn't actually help you at all. That maybe you just wanted to say THANK YOU. And it hurts us not to be able to answer your feedback and support in all your emails individually and individually. We are planning it for Christmas "holiday" (: - Joking aside: We hope to answer all your open questions below. If you still don't see your question answered there, choose one of the ways described below to get individual help.

THANK YOU for your support

Hans & the Bonaverde Team

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. When do I get my machine?

I don't know. Before 20/12/2017 - I promise. But of course only if you also give us your address. After so long we understand that you need time to do it. But we also have to carry on. Therefore, openly: if we don't have any address data from you until Friday 1.12.2017, you won't get a machine from this first production. But only from the second. That will be in February, but perhaps not until May. So fill in your link US Backers or Germany Backers or Rest of World Backers

2. How can I buy and give away more machines?

Not at all. We are completely sold out. Until Easter 2018 inclusive, yes, we accept advance bookings, no at the moment not yet, yes, but we will contact you if we can accept your reservation and yes, we hope to have a faster delivery system in action by then.

3. How can I buy more coffee? Try new coffees? Book a coffee subscription, flat rate or direct injection?

We are out, finito. Buying coffee directly from the farmer turned out to be about as complex as building coffee machines that also roast. The six copy-cats we know meanwhile don't imitate, the six copy-cats that we know meanwhile also just bite each other's teeth out, don't try this at home. To cut a long story short: You don't order coffee here, we deliver it. Whether you like it or not. If you have too much, send it back or pay it, only when you consume the coffee. Someone said Pay As You Go? Subscription Boxes? YES! All this and much more. But only a short while ago. When? I don't know about that. We're working on it. We'll be in touch. You got coffee but you don't get the one with the QR code? Yeah, that was stupid of us, the team forgot to include an explanation. Bad. Pardon me. But it's very simple: You go to concierge.bonaverde.com and use the Facebook Messenger, where you'll find the roasting profiles for your coffee varieties. Just click on it.

4. How can I buy Air Filter?

Not at all, at the moment. Soon enough, I'm sure. Right now, we're just sending air filters out with coffee. Use the Air Filter and pay for it if you want to do System Hacking with coffee non-direct. If you have a new air filter, please clean the silver-skin chamber, use the air filter, scan the RFID chip on the air filter and you're good to go for another 30 roasts. If you have lost the RFID, it was missing on your packaging or the chip is just otherwise somehow not there (what we heard for horny stories. ), please write an email to AirFilter@bonaverde.com and we will remotely reset the machine for you. You take over the adhesion, with oily silver skin remainders and hot coffee roastings is not to joke!

5. When does the badge come and what is the cool?

We will send you the badge when it is your turn. We have to follow the order in DHL shipping to avoid more chaos here. The badge is a Membership Card. Attached to you name. With it you can identify yourself to the machine, put every machine into operation, pull you a lifetime on Bonaverde coffee machines and realize the best roasting profiles. As a coffee changer you have access everywhere. All access, even. Our 650k USD Kickstarter Stretch Goal. Just for you.

6. When will my Refund come, when you don't even supply me in xyz!?

Yes, goofy ran, we have leaned too far out of the window. Shipping to all countries of the world is not so easy. We are currently creating 32 countries. Well, the EU and the US. And a few riparian states. That is not satisfactory, we know that. Our suggestion: Refund take now and as soon as we are represented in your country with a distributor, we promise you matches we will match your Kickstarter package. Alternatively, now just keep your feet still and follow the communication, we are sometimes surprised ourselves how fast we make progress in some territories with Distribution & Approbation. In any case: Refunds are also available before 20.12.2017 - promised.

7. How can I invest?

-> You missed it. Too bad. Really, it was a great opportunity! We have after 7,813m EUR on Seedmatch now a 35,4m USD Series-A rating post Seedrs. Good deal for all seedmatch investors. But: We'll open a new round soon, we just can't let it go. It's great with you, we grow together, go through thick and thin. Until the IPO. We'll let you know when, where, what, how much.

8. How do you work for Bonaverde?

For this you need an enormously high stress resistance. Don't do that. Totally insane. There's only coffee junkies out here, and we're all turning the wheel. No, kidding, we're always looking for the best people, check corner.bonaverde.com or write jobs@bonaverde.com we're looking for people, less posts. Actually, we're not looking for anything. We are found (:

9. How do I distribute Bonaverde?

For once this is easy: distribution.bonaverde.com - just buy Entry Package for 1.500 EUR, study contracts, order containers, bring Coffee Change to your country.

Jeffrey Price on November 27

FYI - I received my machine in Florida today (11/27/17) despite being on the "I quit, don't send me anything, I want a refund" list. The thing is huge. As stated by others, don't think about putting in on the counter under the cabinets.

It came packed just fine with a big cloth bag covering the whole thing. Now I have a medium sized laundry bag.

Putting it together involves taking the right side off, removing the big black thing, prying it open and snapping in the HEPA/charcoal filter. Then you are supposed to run a liter of water through it without beans. Well, I couldn't make that work, so I just roasted a bag of beans.

Here is the surprising thing - the coffee turned out very good. I will give them credit for that. So, the end use actually works.

However, there are a few things I still don't see. You have one user-controlled setting - coffee grind. That's all (it's behind the water container and there is no way ahead of adjusting it to figure out just what grind is coming next. So be careful and adjust just a bit and check after a pot.

There are no user controls at all. The coffee comes in a filter bag that doubles as the filter for the grinds. You fill it with water, touch the front and it says "scan". You hold the RFID from the coffee bag/filter combo package in front of the scan words and it beeps. Now you tear off the top of the coffee been filter pack, pour the beans into the roaster on top, and put the filter in the filter tray. Close it up and lightly touch the glowing star thingy on the front. That's it.

Now, how do I put my own beans in for roasting? They told us that will be offered.

How do I set a roasting profile? There is supposed to be some free RFID cards.

What happens next? Is there going to be a hack posted to overcome the issues?

What is the cost/choice of beans from BV?

Anyway, I thought it only fair, since I bitched in the past, to acknowledge that the coffee tastes great. But at what cost per pot/cup?

Luke Szkudlarek on November 26

I received the coffee machine, the coffee is good as expected because I tried it from the prototype when I met Hans 4 years ago.

It's been a running joke in my circle of friends, who never believed BV machine would actually arrive. We had a tasting session this weekend, it was fun and everyone enjoyed the coffee, but the story of four years of struggle, drama, lies, unfulfilled promises was even better, it's a great conversation point.

There is no happy ending yet, so the drama continues. will we get the RFID tags to brew our own coffee? or would we have to hack the system ourselves?

Looking forward to the next chapter of this black comedy! Enjoy the ride and stay cheerful, it's the only way to deal with this.

BTW I'll be in Berlin next week visiting BV, I'm happy to write an update here after my visit.

Florian on November 26

I should have invested in Bitcoin instead.

Florian on November 26

so, how many people have actually received a coffee machine yet?

Philip on November 25

Thanks Dan, that's the most helpful post I've seen yet on this campaign. I guess I'll start my daily requests until I reach resolution.

Just curious, but how many support issues did you have listed in your system when all was said and done?

Jesse McLean Jr. on November 24

Is it really any different now than it was in 2012?

Kevin Reierson on November 23

I just submitted 40 requests for a refund on their support site, maybe that will get someones attention?

Kevin Reierson on November 23

Thanks for sharing what worked for you Dan. I am going to try that same thing as well. I have been leaving negative comments on their Facebook

but as usual they never answer or just give excuses.

Corey on November 23

Congrats on getting your refund Dan. That seems to be the story from almost everyone who got their refunds. You have to keep pestering them and messaging them and keep resending the forms. I'll have to start doing that now. I tried being patient, but it's not the route that leads to getting results.

Dan Pearce on November 23

I've finally received my refund today. Good luck to everyone else hunting their money back. Its not been easy to get them to pay up but it can happen if you're persistent/time consuming enough. This was my process if it helps anyone else.

After several messages to support@bonaverde.com I was sent a link to the refund application form (https://bonaverdecoffee.typeform.com/to/n5G8WB). Despite filling this out multiple times, all it resulted in was a sustained silence. The form completes by saying that there is no more action required on your part and the refund will follow, but there is no acknowledgement of receipt by Bonaverde or timeline for refund. After several follow ups, I got sent the refund form again. Followed by more silence. It felt like it was a stalling tactic than an actual formalized and actionable refund process. I've no idea what the actual process behind this form is but it didn't lead to a refund for me. My guess is my name was just added to a list somewhere in a "todo" pile that wont be acted on any time soon.

Then I found the direct link to their support platform (https://coffeechangers.zendesk.com/hc/en-us) which you can log into with your email and see any support requests you may have already sent. I was able to see when they'd just marked my requests "solved" after sending me the refund request forms. I personally didn't feel like anything had yet been solved and being able to see which of my requests was open/pending meant I could open another one. And another one. And another . making sure I wasn't just a name moved to another list somewhere that no one is looking at. I think at one point I must have had double digit open threads that I kept re-opening them and starting new ones until I guess I was starting to bog down their support process and it was just better to just pay me out and shut me up. Its clear that sending me a machine isn't going to result in a revenue stream for Bonaverde and I'm costing them time by making a noise.

I received my full refund via PayPal today. That's my story anyway and how my time with Bonaverde ends.

Its truly a shame that any of this has been necessary. The initial pitch really did sound like something that could change the way coffee is done. I've backed a lot of Kickstarter projects and absolutely expect timelines to slip and final products to change - if they ever even deliver (looking at you coolest cooler). But this is a different beast. This doesn't feel like a journey of steep learning curves, hard realities and problems that have to be overcome. This one feels a lot more deliberate and contrived. The pitch to Seedmatch sold us as consumers of a high volume high profit Rockafella business model. The final product looks so close to the Kaffee Toro machine from Han's last bankrupt company that its difficult to believe the initial concept machine was ever more than snake oil. The distribution network being pushed now with RFID tags, privacy policies, a machine streaming personal data back to HQ, feels a very long way from the holistic coffee distribution network I hoped to be part of. One thing is for sure, what Bonaverde is selling now is far away from what was pitched. Far enough to take me from wanting in to wanting out of any dealings with Bonaverde at any cost.

Mark Lenssen on November 23

Hans refund me otherwise I will personally bring my machine to your doorstep.

Niek Batstra

received the machine yesterday but NO RFID TAGS! please send them to all backers so we can start brewing our own beans too as promised

Kevin Reierson on November 22

I wouldn't expect a response to any questions on here, they seem to have abandoned Kickstarter backers once again.

Stefan Tobiasson on November 21

Where is my Kickastarter RFI tag?

Carsten Andersen on November 21

Please refund my coffee machine, I don’t want your machine, I haven’t backed this product. You made a complete different product than I backed. So please refund my money

BrianW on November 19

Two things: one, I'm surprised anyone wants to return their machine after waiting 4+ years to get it. If the refund came at the same time as the label, great. But with their track record, a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. My .02.

That being said, cracked the unit open finally, and after a clumsy and contradictory setup process, the four of us tried the coffee. The ladies in the group thought it ok (not good, not great); My friend and I thought it bland as can be with no flavor. At best, an expensive gimmick thus far. For about 1/2 the current retail price you can buy a roaster, burr grinder, and then a decent French press or vacuum pot without the 'convenience' of an all-in-one unit. And those 3 separate devices require no privacy policy acceptance, or RFID take scans to use them. I'll hold out some minimal amount of hope for the unlimited RFID card and roasting profiles + the supposed additional coffee that may be on the way. But for now, it's back in the box.

Benjamin Kober on November 19

Declined the privacy policy via form and in a long phone call with Hans. Have been promised a return label for my beta machine and a refund. Neither have arrived at my doorstep, so I sent back the beta machine myself to get the refund finally. Refund hasn’t arrived, but yesterday another factory Berlin machine arrived -WTF?! Unfortunately I wasn’t at home so a neighbor signed for the machine for me, now I’m hoping to get a return label for this unwanted machine.

@BV: please send me a return label ASAP and give me the refund I requested at least 5 times. You could save yourself a lot of costs by sending me a refund instead of the machine I didn’t want. You can also sell the machine to another customer at a far higher price as the money I pledged 4 years ago - win-win, isn’t it?

Kevin Reierson on November 19

They responded to me on facebook, but it was more excuses as usual. I am going to continue posting on their facebook page until they block me or finally give me my money back.

Helge Jordal on November 19

Yes they're responding on Facebook, but no more meaningful than here. The frauds.

BrianW on November 18

FYI - they seem to be responding on their Facebook page - while here, they've been silent.

Kevin Reierson on November 18

I just want my god damn refund so I never have to think about this "company" and their garbage machine ever again.

I also am not going to accept the Bonaberde “privacy” (or lack thereof) policy, will not accept their version of IoT, am disgusted by their complete lack of ethics from the very start.

I too have completed the process of requesting a refund and filling out the online request for they provided.

No refund showing up in my Paypal account yet, in fact there’s been no communication back with the requisite RMA number and return shipping label.

The only communications I’ve see from them are strangely vague, extraordinarily unhelpful, entirely uninformative, sardonically snide, and massively obtuse replies to my posts (and some of yours) on Facebook (similar to postings here on Kickstarter).

Dan Pearce on November 17

US backer. Address confirmation form completed with privacy policy firmly declined. You also have received and acknowledged receipt of my refund details. Just process it already so we can go our separate ways.

Peter M on November 17

Might take me another 4 yrs*

Peter M on November 17

BV New update posted. My understanding is that they are going to send us more coffee (supposedly some 86-89 point coffee)- and they have begun on machine # 2. While the Berlin has some serious defects- if they succeed in fixing them their concept stands to take some decent market share. The concierge is live and the rest of the US machines are shipping. Have at it! Now is the time to test out your machine and let people know what you think.

As for me- I still plan to take mine apart and put it into a lovely beautiful wood veneered curved frame with all access controls and a better roaster. It might flame me another 4 years but.

Reinoud on November 17

It has been 3+ years since I filed my refund request. So I might as well try again on the forum. @Bonaverde can you please please please refund? Thank you.

BrianW on November 17

I'm surprised - on one of the eBay auctions, a user received bags of flavored coffee (Blueberry, Almond, Mixed Nuts). Yet mine had 20 bags of the same coffee. What gives? When is replacement coffee (or the RFID tags for unlimited brewing) going to be available. I have a 20 pound paper weight at this juncture.

Roger Harvey on November 17

My machine should have been on container 1, still hasn't arrived and they haven't bothered to respond to any of my emails I have sent over the last month! Not that I will probably do much with the machine, unless they have greatly reduced the smell it makes while roasting, I could only use the beta machine when it was directly under the kitchen extractor fan and the fan was on a high setting, otherwise the smell was too much for me! Plus the beta machine's grinder packed up before I had used all the coffee up which was supplied with it.

Helge Jordal on November 17

My machine should have been in container 1 or 2, I asked for a refund instead, not getting anything. I've been talking to their customer help (loose term) on Facebook, and I'm being told they can't refund right now, for 'cashflow reasons', and that they 'hope to have a refund ready in 3 weeks'. I am beyond pissed.

Christoph N on November 16

Same here, still wanting on any action taken towards a refund. Machine should be in container 3, did anyone with machines in container 1 or 2 actually get a refund instead of the machine?

Who believes in us

We have worked over 2 years to make our vision become reality by developing, enhancing and testing our roast-grind-brew coffee machine.

Finally we're all set for the final step: We want to take our machine from 135 working prototypes to serial production. We need your pre-orders to finance and start tooling.

Let's start with a little video showing you how our prototype works:

And for all the tech and coffee geeks amongst you, let's have a closer look at the technical details of the machine. To spice the following list up a little bit, we're also revealing why we decided to delay the launch by a couple of days:

Technical data sheet &

facts for the serial production

The next steps

That's how we are going to proceed from now on:

The design

We have crowd-sourced brilliant designs with dedicated designers from all over the world and were overwhelmed by their submissions. As it is prohibited to show photorealistic renderings that could be mistaken for finished products, we hope that our attached sketches and the videos give you a good idea how the machine is going to look.

The following views will give you an overview of how the technical components will be arranged within your machine.

Risks and challenges

There will always be risks and challenges when starting to get a serial production ready. It is a challenge we feel comfortable accepting for many reasons. The most comforting reason for us is that we have created 135 prototypes before including tooling. We also believe that our core technology is full proof and we have great confidence in it.

Things you might be concerned about:

➢ Design: Our crowd design challenge has already delivered a magnificent design. So we are safe on that part.

➢ Usability: We strongly focus on simplicity, that means an easily understandable user interface and high user friendliness. Having used the prototype for over 18 months now, we've collected the experience to build a machine that's easy to use for everyone.

➢ Functionality: We are down to our 5th generation of prototypes. We've been through an intensive trial and error phase and, thanks to that, have identified all remotely possible flaws to this machine. Now we are ready to enter the market with a stable and well-functioning machine.

➢ Serial production: 135 working prototypes have been built already and our solid core technology has passed the reality check. We have done the whole tooling, production line set-up and engineering process before. We are excited to take our baby to the next level.

➢ Coffee quality: By now, way more than 15,000 of you have tried our coffee. We were overwhelmed by your positive feedback and have done everything to ensure recurring quality for our machine.

Supply Chain & Logistics:

➢ Machine parts: We have done more than 18 months of closed beta testing on all crucial parts. We identified the critical parts of our machine and either replaced or made sure to fix them.

➢ Suppliers: We are talking to exclusive and innovative supplier partners for coffee, smoke and water filters to ensure best service quality and a high durability of all machine parts.

➢ Manufacturing partner: Signed. Timeline set. Ready to roll.

Bonaverde Marketplace

Coffee Growers

We’re currently working with three grower partners in Nicaragua to supply coffee to our customers, as well as establishing agreements with interested growers in Mexico and Sao Tome e Principe. We’ve received more than 200 inquiries from growers interested in selling beans on our platform, and our current focus is on building the infrastructure needed to bring them on board as quickly as demand grows.

Growers on our platform are guaranteed a price of at least 25% above production cost. For the first time, they’ll also have the opportunity to drive up demand and prices for their coffee by building their own brands.

Marketplace

An early version of our online platform will be tested by 110V Beta testers in summer 2017. We'll have a marketplace available to accompany mass shipment in late summer and autumn 2017,В with additions and improvements consistently arriving as the user community grows.

Currently, we’re working with three Nicaraguan growers connected through highly-respected coffee sourcing partner ECOM. As we move forward, Bonaverde sourcing facilitators, or Coffee Scouts, will take responsibility for onboarding growers to the marketplace. We’re working on a set of standards to ensure fair practices and high-quality for the beans in our marketplaces. You’ll also be able to leave reviews of coffee purchased through our marketplace. We expect sales and reviews to organically set and uphold high quality standards.

Customs and tax are included in your coffee price. For the moment, we'll be accounting for them. Later, our distributors will take over addressing these costs.В

While pricing will depend on origin and varietal, our green bean pouches will be available for about $2 each. These single-portion pouches are packaged to contain enough beans for 1l of coffee.

While you’ll be purchasing beans from growers via our marketplace, it doesn’t make sense financially for them to ship each consumer-sized package directly to your doorstep. At the beginning, Bonaverde will facilitate shipment. Later, fulfillment partners in coffee consuming countries will receive large shipments of beans from growers, which they will pass on to you after you order. Our ecosystem is carefully set up to ensure that these fulfillment partners’ profits are directly tied to growers’ profits, putting value-added processes in the hands of producers and consumers rather than middlemen.

Machine Operation

General Questions

Yes, the coffee pouches are biodegradable filters so you can recycle them -- better yet, however, you can compost them.В You can put them right into your garden (just remove the small scanner chip).

The Bonaverde Berlin is 50 cm (20") tall, 25 cm (10") wide and 25 cm (10") deep.

The white/green and silver/black are the exact same size.В

The machine weighs about 10kg (22 lbs).

Consumption of electricity during stand-by mode is approximately 1 watt.

Im Stand-By Modus verbraucht die Maschine circa 1 Watt an Strom.

The roast-grind-brew process takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, depending on roast profile and coffeeВ variety.

Currently, the machine is only calibrated for full pots of coffee.В We are working on a half-pot option for times when you don’t need a full liter of coffee.В

Yes. We're developing features that will allow you to adjust existing roasting profiles, create and store personal roast profiles, exchange recipes with other Coffee Changers, and find profiles created by professional roasters - all through your smartphone.

Throughout development of our roast-grind-brew process, we've consulted with coffee experts (including our team’s two Q Graders), roasters, coffee lovers and baristas to ensure our machines produce the best tasting coffee available. Opinions on degassing vary, and differ depending on type of roast, bean varietal, and whether you’re preparing espresso or filter coffee. In the end, we come back to the taste. Over the course of our development, the over 15,000 people who have tasted our coffee have had no complaints about the taste - in fact, they’ve raved about it!

  1. Security for your machine. Infinite or multiple use chips leave openings for hackers. Single-use chips protect the security of your machine.
  2. Security for farmers. We’re welcoming all players - growers, brands, roasters, etc. - into our online marketplace. We believe their presence can burgeon growers to greater success. This only works, however, if they have incentive to play by the rules. The big players have a vested interest in the current system. They benefit from owning value-added processes. We need to make sure our ecosystem is protected through some kind of guard, to ensure it remains the grower-centric trade infrastructure it is designed to be. Single-use chips make this possible.

Not at the moment. Once the process has begun, it must run through to completion. Given the wide interest in this, however, we are looking into developing grind-only and roast-only features through our app.

We selected a high-alloy steel grinder for optimum durability. The grinder is meticulously calibrated for a consistent grind, every time.

The machine weighs 9kg.

At the moment, the machine only processes green beans. It is not possible to bypass the roaster to access the grinder.

The RFID chip contains a unique serial number for the coffee you're about to prepare. This serial number is associated with a range of information in our Coffee Cloud, including the ideal roasting curve for the bean. When you scan the RFID chip, it sends the number to the Coffee Cloud, which then tells the machine what temperature to use at various stages of the roasting process. It does not contain grinder settings - you can set those yourself using the dial behind the water tank!

We’ll be meeting the standards set by European recycling law, which is arguably the strictest in the world. We’re happy to bring these high environmental responsibility standards to where ever you brew your coffee.

Below please find a series of "how to" videos that quickly walk you through some basics of machine operation can cleaning, along with an explanation of the Coffee Changer Badge

Machine Framework (understanding the different parts):В https://vimeo.com/ 242720218

We hope you're enjoying your coffee!

We’re sorry our manual is a bit out of date, but the good news is, your machine does not require a full rinse cycle as we do a test rinse at the point of production.

Simply give the glass coffee jug and plastic water container a quick rinse in your sink before using the first time, and you are all set to enjoy your first pot of freshly roasted coffee!

If you areВ having trouble with theВ Coffee ConciergeВ (concierge.bonaverde.com) here are a few things you can do to troubleshoot.

  1. Be sure you are connected.В Have you been prompted for your IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity), a 15 digit number which for the Berlin usually starts with 35704? The IMEI is located on the bottom of your machine along with the serial number. If you have not yet connected then say Hello to the Concierge and we'll be sure we get you connected.В В
  2. If you have already connected, try a reset.В Type in "Cancel" and this should reset the Concierge.В You may be prompted to reenter your IMEI number but you should not need to be re-added as you will already be noted as an accepted user.

If neither of these remedies work,В try a hard reset by unplugging your machine for 10 seconds and then plugging it back in and try again.

The Bonaverde Berlin is automatically connected to the Internet through a 3G cellular connection when the machine is plugged in.В This connection is managed by Bonaverde and there is no charge to the user.В В

There is no wireless (wifi, wi-fi) connection of the machine itself.В However, by visitingВ concierge.bonaverde.com В you can connect the machine to Facebook Messenger (phone or desktop) which will allow you to control the machine from your phone.В For more information about connecting your Berlin to the Coffee Concierge please visit this article:В How do I connect the machine to the Internet? Is there an app?

If there is no cellular service available in the location of the machine, one can still make coffee by using the RFID scan pad on the front of the machine to start the roast-grind-brew process.

When you plug in your Bonaverde Berlin, the SIM card inside automatically connects to the available cellular network (it operates on 3G).В The is no cost to you for this connection.

We have released an alpha version of our Coffee Concierge that will allow you to connect your phone to the machine.В This feature,В which runs on Facebook Messenger and can be found at concierge.bonaverde.comВ on your phone or computer.

Say "hello" and you will be prompted for some information. The Coffee Concierge connects to Facebook Messenger using the machine's unique IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity), a 15 digit number which for the Berlin usually starts with 35704 and is found on the bottom of your machine along with the serial number.В В

No. Once it's plugged in, the machine is ready to use anytime!В

Yes! For your convenience, weВ pack our green beans in a biodegradable coffee filter. IfВ using green beans from other sources, we recommend you to use a commercial coffee filter no. 4.

Ja!

Open the filter drawer above the coffee jug by pulling it gently towards you.В Open and insert the coffee filter. Push the drawer back intoВ the machine.В В

TheВ amount of water used will influence theВ taste and bitterness of theВ coffee. We have indicated some different levels you may want to try - but as long as you don't go below the minimum recommendation, it's up to you!

First, open the filter drawer by pulling it gently towards you.В Then removeВ used coffee filter. The filter is biodegradable. We recommend reusing the coffee grounds for compost, fertilizer, or cleaning!

es! Use the dial behind the watertank to choose between five expertly-calibrated grinder settings.

Your owners manual also has detailed setup instructions with photos, and here are a few quick tips to get you started.

Unboxing the machine -- we recommend you keep the packaging in case you want to take the Berlin somewhere, like your office!

1. Remove the eggshell carton from the top of the machine.

2. Leaving the machine in the bag, lift it out of the package.

3. Open the bag and slide it down around the sides of the machine.

4. Take a moment to remove all foil and stickers from your machine.

5. Remove the plastic security ring from your coffee carafe.

1.В Plug it in! The power cable will already be inserted into the bottom of your machine.В

2.В Double check to make sure the cable is firmly inserted in the machine before plugging it into the socket.

3.В Once plugged in, a white light will indicate that your machine is ready to rock and roll.

4.В Tap the round sensor on the front of your machine to get started. A yellow light will flash, indicating the machine is ready for its first air filter.

5.В Find the air filter that came with your machine and scan it into the machine by holding it in front of the sensor panel on the front of your machine. Now unwrap the filter so it can be inserted into the machine.

6. To insert the air filter, gently push in the panel on the top right side of the machine and take out the big black air filter box. You may have to be a little firm with it if it’s stubborn. Open the top of the air filter box and push the flaps asked to insert the air filter. With the air filter safely nestled inside, move the flaps back. It only fits one way but the flaps do take a bit of pressure to close!В Re-attach the cover and re-insert into the side of the machine.В Then put the outer panel back on by putting the bottom of the panel in first and gently press it back into place.В Your air filter is good for 30 brews.В Don't worry, you don't have to count, a yellow light will appear on the sensor panel when it is time to replace it!В

Making Coffee -- ok, now we are ready to make some amazing coffee!В

1.В Push the round sensor and scan your selected coffee pouch on the front of the machine.

2. Open the roasting chamber using the simple push-push mechanism. Tear the top of the coffee pouch open along the perforatedВ line, pour your beans into the roasting chamber, and push roasting door close.

3. Your empty pouch has transformed into a coffee filter. Magical! Insert the filter into the filter drawer which is located just above the carafe.

4. Fill the water tank on the left side of the machine (with water only please).

5. With all players in place, push the round sensor on the front of the machine to begin the roast-grind-brew experience!В В

There is no on/off or "power" button on your Bonaverde Berlin.В You simply plug it in and you are ready to go.В В

By touching the sensor pad on the front of the machine you will "wake it up" and be ready to go.

After you make a pot of coffee the machine will keep the pot warm for 15 minutes and then turn off automatically.В Your machine will then go into standby mode until you are ready to make your next pot.

(Note to beta backers -- we heard from a lot of you that you did not like the persistent flashing light on the sensor panel so we disabled that in the final version of the machine.)

Maintenance

The Bonaverde Berlin comes with a standard one year warranty.В We want you to be happy with your product and will do our best to get you brewing again as quickly as possible!

If your machine fails during normal usage and we are not able to get it working again via our customer support team, they will put you in touch with our aftermarket service team.В Our aftermarket team will work with you to repair or replace your machine at no cost to you.

If you damage your machine (e.g., accidentally knock it off the table) our aftermarket team will assess whether your machine can be repaired and further determine any costs to do so.

The grinder shouldВ be cleaned about every six months. We are developing a maintenance kit for this purpose, which will include grinder cleaner and water softening agent. We will keep you posted!

The air filter will last for 30 roasts.В The machine will let you know whenВ it is time to change the filter with a yellowВ light on your sensor panel. Remember to scan the code on the new filter (there is a sticker on the packaging) so that your machine resets its counter after replacement.

Here is a quick video on how to replace the air filter:В https://vimeo.com/ 242720705В

Here's a quick video on how to replace the air filter:В https://vimeo.com/ 242720705В

For those of you would prefer written directions, here you go!В

Be sure the machine is cool and unplugged before you proceed. В The air filter is located inВ the compartment on the right side of the machine. Gently push the round shallow indentВ on top of the compartment to open. Remove the outer cover and set it aside. Take outВ the black air filter box, remove the lid, flip up the small metal clips and remove the filter. Discard or recycle as local laws allow.

Unwrap the new filter and keep the packaging which containsВ RFID tagВ needed to reset theВ filter count.

Insert the new air filter, white-side up, and push downВ the metal clips. Return the lid to the air filter compartment and be sure it is tightly closed.В Click the compartment cover back on and return the compartment to the machine, inserting the bottom first.В Before starting another roast-grind-brew process, touch the round sensor, wait for the beep,В scan the RFID tag on the air filter packaging, and touch the sensor again. You are all set!

The silver skins should be emptied once a week, or every 5-10 brews.

The water tank, roasting chamber and air filter cartridge are all easily removed forВ maintenance. While the grinder cannot be removed, we are developing a kit for cleaning it every six months. WeВ advise that you contact your distributor with other maintenance concerns.

To clean your machine, simply wipe with a damp towel or cloth.В The filter drawer and coffee carafe are both dishwasher safe for easy cleaning.

Common Problems

If you are having trouble with your Bonaverde Berlin and you have not been able to solve the issue through one of these methods, you can try a hard reset by holding the sensor button for 5 seconds.В If this doesn't work, try unplugging the machine for 10 seconds and plugging it back in.В

For information on how to reset the Coffee Concierge, please click here.

Your power cord should be safely tucked in the coffee carafe during shipping. As items sometimes shift during shipping, you may also find it underneath the eggshell packaging.В Once located, the cord attaches to the bottom of the machine.В

Here's a video on the meaning of the different light and signals:В https://vimeo.com/ 242719577

Your Bonaverde Berlin has its own special language of lights and sounds, designed to make it easy to understand your machine’s processes and needs.

Here are some tips for when the circle on your scanner bad turns a particular color.

Green -В Green lights are forВ affirmation! A green light means all systems are go, indicating either a successful scan or a freshly finished pot of coffee.

Blue - Blue lights are for water. Fill your water tank, press the round sensor, and the brewing should restart smoothly.

Yellow - Yellow lights are your machine’s request for a new air filter. Once the air filter is correctly replaced, the light should return to white.

Red -- Red lights indicate there is an issue or error.В It is important to also listen for a "beep" that will give you some indication of the problem. Here is a quick guide.

Red Light (and no beep) = Possible scan error.

If after a scan the machine flashes a single red light, you may have scanned the wrong tag. Wait for the round white light to come back on, press the round sensor, and scan again.

Red Light + Single beep = Roasting Chamber or Air Filter or Filter Drawer not inserted correctly

Check the Air Filter and silver skin container to ensure they fit snugly in their compartment (right side of the machine). Check the Roasting Chamber and Filter Drawer to ensure they are in their correct their positions.

Red Light + Two beeps = Something has gone wrong.В

Try resetting the machine by holding the sensor button for 5 seconds.В If this doesn't work, try unplugging the machine for 10 seconds and plugging it back in.В

All lights are turning red:В If all lights on the machine turn red on plug-in, the machine may simply need to cool down after its last roast. Wait for the red lights to turn off and switch to a pulsing white light before starting your next pot of coffee.

If none of these remedies work, please contact the support team through support.bonaverde.com.

Berliner Unternehmer bekam für sein Startup Bonaverde 5 Millionen

Posted on August 17, 2017 Written by Massage Leave a Comment

Also muss der Hersteller Au ch dafür sorgen. Ein neues Geschäftsfeld wurde ich mal sagen. Bonaverde Kaffee kaufen online also.

Arist Scam

Cataloging deceitful practices by the Arist Coffee Maker team

A History of the Arist Scam

Arist, created by Nelson and Benson Chiu, was funded on Kickstarter in 2014 with massive fanfare. It raised $850,000 and was the most successful crowd funded Hong Kong project ever. From the beginning, however, many individuals doubted numerous promised aspects of the Arist. After months of silence on the KS comment page, this website was started to raise awareness and investigate what was going on behind the scenes. It was never imagined the full scope of deception and malpractice that would be uncovered.

Arist is not a new machine - it is a Jura Superautomatic

Recent investigation shows the only documented prototype of the Arist is just a Jura coffee machine. A 2012 youtube video shows a remarkably similar project to Arist. Learn more.

Founders paid cash refunds for artificial KS backings

Hundreds of launch party attendees were asked to fund Arist on KS and were then handed cash refunds. This artificially raised the profile of the campaign. Learn more.

Fraud against Hong Kong

Benson and Nelson Chiu deceived the people of Hong Kong by staging paid actors at demonstrations of Arist. They defrauded Hong Kong by not paying taxes. And they have stolen from taxpayers by taking a matching sum – $850,000 for what they raised on Kickstarter. Learn more.

Fraud at ICT

In order to be eligible for the ICT Award, devices need to exist for at least 3 months. Benson and Nelson made the preposterous claim that 1000 machines from the first generation of Arist had been sent around the world to baristas. Learn more.

An Unimpressive Resume

Benson and Nelson Chiu have made a career out of being professional snake oil salesmen. From exaggerating or lying about their professional past, plagiarizing other people’s applications, to running a Kickstarter consultancy business which focuses more on the optics of a campaign then teaching businessmen how to build a real product. Learn more.

Changing Product Specifications

Arist was promised to be a product with a laundry list of high-end specifications. A grinder worth more than the price of the machine, a refrigeration unit for milk, 2 bean containers – the list is endless. Bit by bit not only the look of the machine but these specifications are vanishing or changing. Learn more.

Silencing Opposition on Kickstarter

Benson has refunded the most vocal critics on Kickstarter, who then can’t post comments. Then pretended like he didn’t. Learn more.
