KEURIG K-CUP REVIEW - TWININGS GREEN TEA

I thought that a review if Twinings Green Tea Keurig K-cups would be a great way to start off the New Year. As many of us are vowing to live a healthier life, drink more water, cut back on soda, lose weight. green tea is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.

There are several varieties of green tea available in a K-cup. I will review all of them but, wanted to start with Twinings because first of all, Twinings is the ultimate authority on tea in my humble opininion. Second, they offer green tea in a very raw form. This K-cup tea is very unadulterated just, pure green tea at its finest.

I chose to brew my Twinings Green Tea Keurig K-cup on the highest water setting of my brewer. I have found that all Kcup teas are perfectly suited to stand up to the extra amount if water and maintain a strong body and taste. As a matter of fact, I have been known to use my K-cup teas twice.

When I hit brew in my Keurig a grassy aroma filled the air. This is exactly what I was hoping for. With this particular K-cup I want green tea and nothing else.

The color is a rich yellow, slightly caramel. Green tea will of course have translucency to it, but relatively speaking it was minimal.

The taste is reflective of the smell. very grassy, very organic. The grass taste is followed by a pleasant, soothing lemon flavor that balances this K-cup out quite nicely. The pleasing lemon flavor lingers on the tongue, replacing the original green taste.

This grassy taste strongly appeals to me but, it can be an aquired taste for some. This might seem odd but, I think that I need to make my taste recommendation based on foods. This flavor is unique and can not be compared to any other K-cup beverages. If you like the taste of greens and don't need to coat your salads with dressing you will love this K-cup green tea.

If you are a person that eats a little broccoli with your cheese, this is not the K-cup for you. But, don't worry you can still enjoy the health benefits of green tea. Bigelow makes a green tea K-cup that may suit you better. It is flavored with hints of pomegranate eliminating the grassy sort of taste.

Twinings Tea Shop and Museum

The Twinings Tea Shop on The Strand first opened in 1717. This flagship store is where the historic British brand, R Twinings was founded in 1706. The shop stocks a wide range of specialty teas, fruit and herbal infusions, iced teas, and coffee blends as well as gifts, teapots, cups, mugs, biscuits, cakes, and chocolates.

It's reputedly home to the smallest shop front in London. The shelves in the long narrow space are stacked high with an incredible array with of tea.

There is also a small onsite museum that charts the history of the Twinings family and features historic tea caddies, vintage adverts and more unusual items from the world of tea. Before you make a purchase, head to the tea tasting counter to sample blends prepared by the knowledgeable staff. The Strand Shop also has a mail order service. The shop, museum and tea tasting counter are all free to visit.

"Thomas Twining (1675-1741) founded the House of Twining by purchasing the original Toms Coffee House at the back of this site in 1706, where he introduced tea. In 1717 he opened the Golden Lyon here as a shop to sell tea and coffee.

Black Tea

Caffeine in Tea varies quite a bit. The longer the tea (or tea bag) is steeped in water, the more caffeine will be present.

On average loose black tea had 22-28mg of caffeine per 1 gram dried matter.

Most tea manufacturers do not list caffeine amounts on labels (one exception is Lipton regular tea listed at 55mg per serving).

The amount listed above is an average amount taken from various laboratory tests. Originally we listed an amount (47mg/8 fl oz brew) taken from the USDA. However more recent lab tests show this amount to be lower.

The following table lists recent lab test results for one tea bag of the various brands steeped in 6oz cups of water.

What About Herbal Teas?

So-called herbal teas aren't actually tea at all, but a collection of other herbs and flavors. Herbal teas do NOT contain caffeine.

What About Green Tea?

Autumn is Here & We Love Chai Tea!

Chai…now doesn’t that sound like a good ring to your ears? You should know that it brings a good ring to your mouth. In several parts of the world, it’s what they call tea! But for many of us, we think of it as a spiced drink. Chai is usually made with black teas (Assam is a popular one) and spices. Much like a good English cuppa, it’s best with a bit of milk and sweetener. The most popular spices used for Chai teas are ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, anise, fennel, and nutmeg. However, some versions may vary and add different spices.

Chai tea is usually enjoyed in India (where it’s called Masala Chai, or spiced tea mix) and other Southern Asian countries, just as how Yorkshire tea is common in Great Britain! Most recently, chai is making its way West to the United States where it’s become very popular among Americans. There are tea lattes, latte concentrates, and various chai tea flavors! In the US (Bonus Trivia: In Kashmir, they actually use gunpowder green tea for theirs instead of black tea!), there are flavors like vanilla, chocolate, pumpkin, and even apple!

It’s getting easier to make your own chai teas at home, especially with so many homes having Keurig brewers. Twinings makes it easy not only to make your own cups of tea but also to make your own chai tea lattes! Forget the coffee shop! Stay at home and make your own! Earl Grey Cream Tea

One tea that has definitely caught my taste buds by surprise is the English Tea Store Brand’s Earl Grey Cream Blend. I made this on a rainy day a few days ago and was very surprised at the taste! A little milk and sweetener helped make this stand out.

I wanted something caffeinated but something different from my usual PG Tips. Then I remembered I had a bag of Earl Grey Cream, so I opened that up while I had the kettle boiling on the stove. As I waited, I studied the tea leaves and noticed there were little purple flower petals in the bag. I later found out that they were corn flower petals. Found them to be very pretty, though.

This tea tastes very much of smooth, creamy vanilla, especially after the milk and sweetener were added. It made me want to have a scone right then and there! It feels very much like a dessert tea. Or better yet, skip the sweet treat and just have another cup of tea!

In my research, I learned that 98 percent of this tea comes from estates that are part of the Ethical Tea Partnership. The ETP website explains they they are a non-profit organization working to improve tea sustainability, the lives of the tea workers, and the environment in which the tea is produced. They are a worldwide organization that includes tea companies big and small. Some tea companies that are partnered with the ETP include well known British tea brands like Ahmad Tea and Twinings.

The Twinings in Three Centuries

If you wanted to discourse on the various members of the Twinings tea dynasty, you certainly wouldn’t be at a loss for material. The company moved into their fourth century of operations a few years ago and the latest of the Twinings line – Stephen Twining – is in the tenth generation of tea people from this august family.

If you wanted to read more about the Twinings family, you could try The House of Twining, 1706-1956: Being a Short History of the Firm of R. Twining & Co. Ltd, Tea and Coffee Merchants, 216 Strand London W.C.2. It’s a 115-page volume that was written by one of the Twinings nearly six decades ago. Used copies of this volume are apparently still floating around out there for a rather reasonable price.

If you’re up for instant gratification, however, you could go to various points around the Internet where free public domain books are offered and take a look at The Twinings in Three Centuries: The Annals of Great London Tea House, 1710-1910. Which might seem like a confusing title at first, but it references the fact that, at that time, the family had operated in three different centuries.

It’s a relatively slim volume that’s published by “R. Twining & Co., Ltd.” to celebrate the bicentennial of their entry into the tea business in 1710. It’s at that time that what the book calls “Tom’s Coffee House” was transformed into “an emporium for the sale and consumption of what was still timidly spoken of as ‘the new China herb.'” Tom, of course, referring to Thomas Twining, who kicked the whole thing off.

The move to tea was an opportune one for the family, given that it would eventually overtake coffee and become not only a national drink, of sorts, but an icon of British culture. The first half of the book focuses on the early days of the business, during which time it prospered greatly and ends with the death of Thomas Twining in 1741, at which point the reins were handed over to his son, Daniel.

The second half of the book deals with the generations of Twinings who followed and like the first half touches on various key incidents that took place in tea history during this time. Also worth noting, the numerous interesting illustrations that provide an excellent enhancement to the text.

Stephen Twining – 10th Generation Tea Guy

Many decades ago, for a school assignment, I undertook the task of seeing how far back I could trace my ancestry. Given my limited resources, I was only able to go back a few generations but it was an interesting project nonetheless.

In this particular respect I find it a little hard to relate to someone like Stephen Twining, who can trace his ancestry back at least ten generations. Which is only since they got into the family business of tea selling. Of course, Twining is only one of the latest branches of the Twinings family tree. It’s a family who have been doing their thing for hundreds of years now and have made quite a respectable name for themselves.

For more background on the founding fathers of the Twinings dynasty check out our previous articles on Thomas Twining, who got the operation rolling all the way back in 1706, and third-generation Twinings guy Richard Twining, who steered the company through some interesting times for the British tea industry in the late eighteenth century.

Stephen Twining has served as a sort of goodwill ambassador for Twinings since around the turn of the century. He embarked on a “global tea journey” in 2005 to commemorate the company’s move into their fourth century. The tour kicked off in December in Singapore and Thailand, with Twining hitting many points around the globe after that to spread the good word about tea.

It’s a journey that continues – presumably in a more relaxed fashion – to this day. If you keep tabs on tea news you’ll see that Twining has held forth in several interviews with Asian papers this summer. One of those interviews, with China Daily, was conducted when he was in Shanghai to give a presentation.

Twining revealed that while he does also drink wine his years in the tea business has not dampened his enthusiasm for the fruits of the leaf. He claims to drink up to 15 cups daily and says “anything less than 9 is a completely unsatisfactory tea-drinking day.” A tea drinker after my own heart, Twining claims to love Assam tea – a black tea from India – best and cautions against the “uncouth” practice of ruining tea by adding sugar to it.

Much of the rest of this particular interview, not surprisingly, dealt with questions of tea drinking, culture and production in China, a nation that pretty much had a lock on the business when Thomas Twining kicked things off three-plus centuries ago.

Green tea comes with a host of health benefits and is a smarter sipping choice than soda or other sugary beverages. Twinings sells a number of green tea varieties including gunpowder, jasmine and fruit-flavored options. Green teas such as Twinings' contain antioxidants called catechins as well as caffeine. Together, these substances may help you lose weight, according to an analysis of existing research published in "The American Journal of Nutrition" in 2010. The study authors found that, on average, participants who consumed catechins with caffeine lost about 3 pounds more than those who only took caffeine. Help maximize this boost by drinking your tea plain or with a squeeze of lemon instead of with sugar.

Cholesterol Control

A number of studies have linked green-tea consumption to healthier cholesterol levels, according to NYU Langone Medical Center. Specifically, green tea may lower levels of LDL cholesterol in the blood. LDL cholesterol can build up on artery walls and form a hard plaque that makes the arteries narrow and rigid. This condition, called atherosclerosis, helps set the stage for heart attack and stroke, which occur when a blood clot becomes lodged in an artery.

Possible Cancer Protection

Although more research is needed, some studies suggest that green tea may help prevent cancer, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Cancer rates are lower in regions where green-tea consumption is high, and preliminary research shows that the tea is a possible cause. Researches are looking at green tea's role in preventing cancer of the bladder, breasts, skin and other organs.

Healthy Tea Drinking

To reap the full health benefits of green tea, Harvard Health Publications recommends drinking a cup of tea several times per day. It also recommends steeping your tea for three to five minutes to draw out the catechins. Decaffeinated green tea contains fewer catechins than regular tea, although it still may be a superior choice in the evening if caffeine prevents you from sleeping. Caffeine may also cause nervousness, upset stomach and rapid heartbeat, and drinking large amounts of tea may produce these effects.
