    Matcha & Sencha

Matcha & Sencha — How Different?

Sencha and Matcha are both “Camellia Sinensis” and green tea, a non-fermented tea. (Black tea and Oolong tea are also “Camellia Sinensis.” Black tea is completely fermented and Oolong tea is partially fermented. Fermentation process decreases Catechins and EGCG, and increases Caffeine.) However, the nutrition in Sencha and Matcha is not the same.

Nutritional differences in Sencha and Matcha come from their growing environments:

    Sencha: Grown in Full Sun

    Matcha: Grown in Shade

    Sencha (Loose Leaf)

Why does Sencha powder offer more Catechin antioxidants?

Because sun exposure increases Catechin compound in green tea leaves, changing Theanine to Catechins.

Catechins, or EGCG, is a type of polyphenols, and it is believed to be responsible for green tea health benefits.

When entire tea leaves are consumed, even decaffeinated Sencha green tea powder offers higher amount of Catechins, or EGCG, than Matcha.

Edible Green® Sencha green tea powder, regular or water method decaffeinated, is the tea for you, when you would like to avoid Caffeine and would like to get the highest amount of Catechin antioxidants, or EGCG, naturally.

Matcha offers more “Calm Alertness”, which is the benefit of Matcha, a good balance of Caffeine and L-Theanine

When the sun exposure is less, tea leaves contain more Caffeine and L-theanine. L-theanine is a natural relaxant and is found almost exclusively in green tea. L-theanine stimulates the production of alpha waves in the brain, and is associated with relaxation and mental alertness, as well as influencing dopamine and serotonin. Unlike other calming agents, L-theanine doesn’t cause drowsiness. Grown in shade, Matcha offers more Caffeine and more L-theanine than any other type of green tea. The good balance of Caffeine and L-theanine allows Matcha to generate steady energy without the jitters or crash associated with caffeine in coffee and other “energy” drinks.

Although Matcha contains less Catechin antioxidants compared to Sencha powder, Matcha provides much more Catechin than brewed tea and healthier choice, because you will consuming entire green tea leaf in fine powder form. When you need a strong energy boost, and would like to gain steady, calm alertness in addition to green tea health benefits, you will love Matcha.

    Green Tea Benefits

Type the words “green tea” into any Google search, and you’ll quickly be overwhelmed by the deluge of information touting its many benefits- a cure for cancer, miraculous weight loss drink, secret to immortality. Okay, well, not exactly- but here’s some of the amazing things our favorite, antioxidant-rich green has to offer:

    Boosts energy without the crash

Green tea contains caffeine, though only about a third to half the amount in a cup of coffee, and L-theanine, a rare amino acid responsible for savory, umami tasting notes, that produces an anti-stress effect. The caffeine and L-theanine combine, creating this sense of calm, alertness. A perfect pick me up without the jitters and that inevitable crash and burn.

    Skin Saver

Green tea has been shown to have numerous positive effects on the skin, helping it stay clear, vibrant, and youthful.

-Sun protection that works from the inside out, green tea neutralizes UV light, protecting against sunburns. Its probably still a good idea to use your usual SPF, but green tea can help enhance the effects.

-Slows signs of aging and reduces appearance of wrinkles. The antioxidants present in green tea have been shown to help reactivate dying and damaged cells.

-The antioxidant Epigallocatechin-3-gallate, more affectionately known as EGCG, helps fights against inflammation, acne, rosacea and other skin conditions.

    Metabolism Booster

Put the kettle on before hitting the gym. Green tea has thermogenic properties, meaning it can help raise your metabolic rate while also increasing fat oxidation. Thermogenesis refers to the body’s ability to produce heat as it burns calories, so, the more calories burned, the more heat produced.

    Freshen Up

Catechins, disease fighting antioxidants abundant in green tea, help kill oral bacteria that causes bad breath and tooth decay. Steep up a little freshness after lunch, or try a some green tea mints- we know of some good ones!

    Keep it Healthy

Catechins, antioxidants that promote cellular repair, are the major source of those amazing green tea health benefits often cited in articles, lists, or by that “healthy” friend or relative we all have. Said to be responsible for disease prevention, anti-aging, and more, there’s no reason to not load up on these powerful things.

With its antiviral and antibacterial properties (those catechins are at it again), green tea gives your immune system a boost, protecting you against colds and the flu, killing germs that enter through the nose and mouth. Green tea also reduces the risk of more serious conditions like blood clots, high blood pressure, heart disease, even certain cancers and Alzheimer's disease.

    Safe Detox

Chlorophyll is what gives green tea its namesake color. The high chlorophyll content, particularly in matcha, has a detoxifying effect on the body, helping eliminate chemicals and heavy metals from the body.

How We Use Green Tea as an Ingredient

The laundry list of benefits could go on forever, but its easy to see that drinking green tea can help you become a healthier, calmer, and yes, even slightly better looking person. Experts generally recommend drinking about 4-6 cups a day, but why not get your green tea fix any way you like? Whip up a green tea latte, pop a few green tea mints, or get some daily wellness with Green Tea+C.

    Sencha Tea Health Benefits

Sencha tea makes up nearly 80 percent of the total tea manufactured in Japan, according to the website The Nibble. Farmers harvest sencha tea from the top leaves and buds of plants grown in full sunlight. It is regarded as a high quality tea, with a golden color and crisp, grassy flavor.

    Sencha Green Tea

Black tea is created when tea leaves undergo a fermentation process. Oolong tea leaves are partially fermented. Sencha is a green tea, and as such it undergoes minimal processing and no fermentation. This allows it to maintain high concentrations of catechins, substances associated with numerous health benefits.

    Antioxidants

Catechins belong to a group of compounds called polyphenols that are powerful antioxidants, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Antioxidants help prevent cellular and genetic damage by neutralizing unstable molecules called free radicals. You can’t avoid free radicals entirely – they occur naturally in your body, and unavoidable environmental influences such as air pollution also contribute to the formation of free radicals. By drinking sencha green tea, you’re treating your body to a healthy dose of antioxidants that may help neutralize these harmful molecules and decrease your risk of certain diseases.

Sencha Tea vs. Matcha Tea Powder: What’s the Difference?

So Let’s get down to it: Why is Matcha Tea Powder so much better?

Every day, more and more people join the movement back towards a more natural way of living and eating – which means that more and more herbal supplements and natural foods are arriving to the shelves of our grocery stores. It can be confusing to sort out the health benefits of similar products, and decide which one is right for you.

Sencha green tea and matcha tea powder are similar products that have different flavors, costs, and nutritional profiles. Green teas have been sold in supermarkets and online for quite a while, but matcha powder has recently been gaining in popularity.

Because matcha powder provides many of the same health benefits of green tea, but at a much higher level, many green tea loyalists are making the switch. Matcha tea powder is more potent and more versatile.

Matcha powder comes in a variety of different grades, which makes it unique from other teas on the market. The different grades of matcha vary according to the processing method, and how the product will be used. Some are suitable for sipping, while others are better for adding to your favorite treats like a matcha latte, matcha smoothie, or green tea ice cream.

Brewed Green Tea vs. Matcha Green Tea Powder

When a typical green tea or sencha is brewed, it leaves many of its nutrients behind – filtered out by a tea bag or infuser. Instead of consuming the most powerful part of the tea leaves, you toss them into the trash or compost heap.

Matcha tea powder isn’t brewed or infused. You don’t filter the leaves and nutrients out – you drink them. The tea leaves are stone ground into a fine powder – you are literally consuming the entire leaf and all of its nutrients. High grades of matcha powder can have up to 15 times the nutritional potency of standard green teas. To enjoy the same nutritional benefits, you can drink ten cups of green tea or one cup of matcha tea powder.

Sencha is more common than matcha, however there are clear differences between the two. Comparing sencha tea to matcha powder is like comparing apples to oranges. Both types of green tea offer numerous health benefits, but the nutritional value varies between the teas.

Sencha tea provides a greater amount of vitamin C and vitamin E compared to matcha. However, matcha tea powder provides more vitamin B6 and beta-carotene than sencha. Health benefits of green tea aside, many people find that matcha tastes better.

Discover the difference for yourself with Epic Matcha. If you have questions, we have a Q & A page (or feel free to contact us with any questions you may have), and buy your Epic Matcha.
