Effects of Kratom

Kratom is a relatively new drug to the US and Europe. It has been used for many years in Southeast Asia as an anti-diarrheal medicine, a painkiller and a recreational drug. Kratom is the popular name for a tree and the drug comes from its leaves.

The drug may be bought in leaf form but in this country, it is more likely to be purchased as a capsule filled with powdered leaf material or a chopped up form of the leaf that can be used for tea or smoking. Most people ingest the drug. The effects of kratom come on rather quickly and last between five and seven hours, although high doses can last longer.

Kratom is heavily promoted as a legal, undetectable, safe drug that can be used to come off stronger drugs. It is not yet illegal in the US but the breakdown products of kratom can be detected with some drug tests. Because of its legality, the drug tends to be more popular among young people who cannot yet buy alcohol and who may be concerned about being arrested with weed or other drugs.

Kratom is included in a newly-defined class of drug called New Psychoactive Substances, so-named by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. In the 2013 World Drug Report, kratom is on this list along with khat (another plant, this one from East Africa), Salvia divinorum (a plant that is widely available in the US), and synthetics ketamine, mephedrone and others. Many of these drugs are not yet illegal in the US and Europe, despite their dangerous and addictive effects.

Legislators Can’t Keep Up

Even when a drug sends people to the emergency room and even when it is known to be addictive, it takes time to collect and compile all the scientific information that supports a legislative ban.

Kratom has sent some people to emergency rooms and there have been calls to poison control centers in the US. Most of the adverse effects of this drug have been felt in Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand where it is heavily used. The drug is illegal in Thailand. In Thailand in 2011, more than 13,000 people were arrested for kratom-related crimes (5% of all drug-related crimes in that country).

The drug is abused for its sedative or stimulating effects. At low dosages, it is a stimulant, making a person more talkative, sociable and energetic. At higher dosages, it creates lethargy and euphoria. But the experience is not pleasant for every user.

Adverse Effects of Kratom

This drug only began to be seen in the US in 2012, but it is easy to obtain online. Many smoke shops, “head shops,” convenience stores and gas stations sell this drug.

A person using this drug may not expect or want the following undesirable effects of kratom:

1. Edginess, nervousness
2. Vomiting (can be severe and prolonged)
3. Nausea (can be severe and prolonged)
4. Sweating
5. Itching
6. Constipation
7. Delusions
8. Lethargy
9. Respiratory depression
10. Tremors
11. Aggressive or combative behavior
12. Psychotic episodes
13. Hallucinations
14. Paranoia

Since the drug is also addictive, one of the effects can include compulsive use of the drug despite the harm that is being done to one’s mental state or life.

Addiction effects may include:

1. Loss of sexual desire
2. Loss of weight
3. Darkening of skin on face
4. Constant cravings that drive one to use more of the drug

Withdrawal effects of kratom are very similar to those of opiates like heroin or prescription painkillers.

1. Diarrhea
2. Muscle pain
3. Muscle tremors and jerking
4. Restlessness and sleeplessness
5. Severe depression
6. Crying
7. Episodes of panic
8. Sudden swings of mood
9. Irritability

At this point in the US, the numbers are not large for people going to the emergency room with these adverse effects. But the drug is new to this country. If people are not educated about the adverse effects that can be suffered, including addiction, then the drug may become more popular and more damage may be seen.

How To Make Kratom Tea

Basic Kratom Tea Recipe:

The following is a basic recipe for making kratom tea. This recipe makes enough tea for 2 medium-strength doses.

1.) Take 15 grams (1/2 ounce) of dried, crushed kratom leaves (or powder) and put into a pot. To this add 1/2 liter of water.

2.) Boil very gently for 15 minutes. (if you boil on a very high heat, you will bring out the bitterness of the leaf).

3.) Pour the tea through a strainer into a bowl and reserve the liquid.

(squeeze the leaves in the strainer to get most of the liquid out).

4.) Put the leaves back in the pot and add another liter of fresh water. Repeat steps 2 and 3.

(after the leaves have been strained a second time, they can be discarded, or you can eat them to ensure you don't miss out of any vital alkaloids.)

5.) Put the combined liquid from both boiling's back into the pot and boil until the volume is reduced to about 100ml - enough for 2 medium strength servings.

If you don't like the taste of the kratom tea, boil it down to a very small volume, then gulp quickly and follow with some of your favorite juice (we prefer grapefruit juice). If you want to give this a little extra kick, add a couple of grams of Kratom 15x to the final boil.

Your Kratom Tea can be refrigerated for 5-7 days, You can freeze or add alcohol to store large batches for longer periods. When freezing, store in large plastic bottles (not glass) and close with a cap. We recommend freezing kratom tea in small plastic bottle (recycle your water bottles) and then removing from the freezer as and when you need them. If you freeze large containers of tea, you will need to de-frost the entire container prior to drinking. If you prefer to add alcohol (80 proof such as Vodka or Rum) add 1 part Alcohol to 3 parts Kratom Tea.

Fast Kratom Tea Recipe

The following is a faster recipe for making kratom tea. This recipe makes enough tea for 1 medium-strength doses.

1.) Take 7 grams (1/4 ounce) of dried, crushed kratom leaves (or powder) and put into a pot. To this add around 2.5 cups of water.

2.) Boil very gently for 15 minutes or until you have about 1 cup.

3.) Empty the pan into a cup and let cool for a few minutes.

4.) Stir with a spoon to suspend the kratom material and drink.

5.) You will have some powder residue or wet leaf still in the bottom of the cup. Add some cold water or fruit juice, stir it up, and try to consume as much of the remaining kratom as possible.

Maeng Da Kratom Tea Recipe

Being the strongest kratom strain on the market, the main benefit of Maeng Da Tea is that less material is required to make a brew. The result is a strong cup, without the bitter taste - a real plus if you dislike the flavor.

1.) Take 2-4 grams of crushed maeng da leaf (powder can also be used) and put into a pan. To this add around 2.5 cups of water.

2.) Boil very gently until over half the water has evaporated (usually around 10-15 minutes) .

3.) Strain the remaining liquid into a cup and let cool for a few minutes.

4.) Add sugar or honey to sweeten and drink.

5.) The remaining material in the pan can still be consumed.

Kratom Resin Tea Recipe

The easiest way to make a tea is buy kratom resin, which can be dropped into boiling water and drank once the solid has dissolved. About 5 - 7.5 grams will be ample for a great cup of Kratom Resin tea. N-Joy !

The latest plant to bliss out users and worry law enforcement officials is kratom, a Southeast Asian tree related to coffee, the leaves of which are chewed to produce a pleasant buzz. Indigenous to Thailand and Malaysia, kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is making its way into parties, festivals, kava bars and a variety of places where aficionados are employing it to get high. In Thailand, kratom leaves are typically chewed fresh, cutting out the fibrous central vein. Dried leaves are often crushed up or powdered and mixed with fruit juice.

First described in an 1839 publication by Dutch botanist Pieter Willem Korthals, kratom is used as a traditional medicine to reduce pain, as an anti-diarrheal, and as way of reducing opiate dependence. In the latter case, kratom leaves are chewed or consumed to decrease symptoms of opiate withdrawal. The plant also enjoys a legendary use for extending the duration of sexual intercourse.

The leaves of kratom contain mitragynine and several related alkaloids. Of all the compounds present in the leaf, mitragynine appears to be the most active and the one most likely responsible for kratom’s pleasing effects. Used as an opiate substitute, kratom contains no opiates of any kind, but it does bind to the same receptor sites in the brain. It binds to the mu-opioid receptor, as do both enkephalins and morphine. Additionally mitragynine binds to kappa-opioid receptors, which are associated with pain relief and sedation. Mitragynine is adrenergic, which produces a stimulating effect, and it also binds with serotonin receptors, producing an anti-depressant effect as well. Due to this multiplicity of activities in the brain, kratom produces an overall pleasing feeling.

As with all substances that modify mood, some agencies are in an uproar over kratom, even though it mostly enjoys a long history of safe use. Currently kratom is illegal in Thailand since the passing of Kratom Act 2486 in 1943, yet Thai officials are considering reversing the 70 year old ban on kratom, due to the plant’s value in weaning addicts off of opiates. Kratom is also illegal in Malaysia, Burma and Australia, and drug officials at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) consider it a “drug of concern.” One kratom fatality was reported in the October 22, 2012 Journal of Forensic Science, but the person who died was also taking a prescription benzodiazepine anti-anxiety drug and cold medications. Thus the actual cause of that death remains unknown.

According to users, kratom produces a pleasant feeling that lasts longer than that of a cup of coffee and produces a sense of well being, moderate euphoria and alertness. Like all psychoactive substances, different dosages produce a range of effects. In general a small amount of kratom produces a feeling of mild stimulation and alertness, while a larger dose produces a feeling of sedation. Moderate kratom use does not appear to impair motor control or promote a tendency to violence.

Concerns regarding the potential for kratom habituation abound. Even pro kratom web sites caution users not to consume this plant every day, warning of a potential dependence. The DEA stated in a January 2013 publication:

“Kratom consumption can lead to addiction. In a study of Thai kratom addicts, it was observed that some addicts chewed kratom daily for 3 to 30 years (mean of 18.6 years). Long-term use of kratom produced anorexia, weight loss, insomnia, skin darkening, dry mouth, frequent urination, and constipation. A withdrawal syndrome was observed, consisting of symptoms of hostility, aggression, emotional lability, wet nose, achy muscles and bones, and jerky movement of the limbs. Furthermore, several cases of kratom psychosis were observed, where kratom addicts exhibited psychotic symptoms that included hallucinations, delusion and confusion.”

The Thai kratom users in the DEA citing were long term, heavy consumers. Most moderate users find the plant pleasant and experience no ill effects. Those who employ it heavily every day, however, may run into problems of dependence.

Since the beginning of recorded history, people have drunk, smoked, chewed, snorted, injected and otherwise consumed psychoactive agents of all types – for the purpose of modifying mood and state of mind. Some substances, like LSD, produce radical shifts in perception and cognitive function. Others, like coffee and cocoa, simply produce a pleasant feeling. . Kratom’s safety is still up for debate, but in the meantime, it is easily available on the Internet, under several brand names. It comes in some very lively designed packages and is also found at head shops. For now its legal status in the United States remains, due to a lack of reported problems with the plant. Still, the daily heavy user should beware.

Kratom Strains Explained

If you are new to kratom and are just learning, there is a lot of information out there and the majority of it is confusing. For one, you have all these options in front of you and its really hard to choose a strain if you have no idea what to expect or what each strain helps you with. The most common misconception about kratom is it being mistaken for a “legal high”… more on that below. The color indicated in the name is given from the color of the vein of the leaf before being de-veined and powdered, either green, red, or white.

Kratom, also known as Mitragyna Speciosa is a relative to the coffee plant. It is a leafy tree that can grow up to 15 meters in height and is found in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, where it has long been used in traditional herbal medicine to treat pain, boost energy, alleviate anxiety and depression symptoms, and promote feelings of wellness and happiness.

Kratom is not a “legal high”, and if you are hoping to get high from kratom, you will end up being disappointed. It is a gentle herb which can provide a mood lift and stimulation and sedation. Stimulating kratom is not unlike caffeine, but it is much different feeling and smoother than caffeine. The duration usually lasts between 2-5 hours. Smaller doses (between 2 and 7 grams usually) provide energy and stimulation and focus. The more kratom you take, the more sedating it becomes. Kratom is high in antioxidants and a healthy alternative to caffeine.

Kratom is often made into a hot tea. This is done by soaking the powder in hot or near-boiling water and letting steep for 15 minutes or so. The powder can be strained out, or it can be swallowed with the tea. Many people prefer capsules because they do not like the bitter taste of kratom tea, and also because they are more convenient. Kratom dosages usually start around 2 grams and can go anywhere up to 10 to 15 grams for some people, depending on their weight, tolerance, and other factors. Dosages should always be started low and slowly worked up until the desired dose is found. The trick is finding the perfect medium for yourself and keeping with that desired dose. Too high of doses are not physically dangerous, but can cause nausea.

Naming of Leaf Strains

There are different varieties of Mitragyna Speciosa strains available for purchase. Reputable vendors use the standard names for strains. Naming Mitragyna Speciosa leaves consist of:

1. The country where the Mitragyna Speciosa tree is from.

2. The region the kratom was picked.

3. The color of the leaf veins, red or green or white.

For example: Green Vein Indo would tell the user that the product is from a green veined leaf from a tree in Indonesia.

Red Vein, Green Vein, or White Veined? What’s the difference?

Green & White Vein Kratom: These are your energetic strains, with white (in general) being slightly higher in energy. These leaves produce more stimulating effects than red vein varieties. Green vein leaves are known for providing clearer thinking as well as extra endurance, and is preferred by athletes and labor workers. Some users have reported that green vein leaves have been useful for anxiety and depression symptoms.

Red Vein Kratom: These are your sedating strains. After the initial rush of energy, the calming effects take over. Red vein is often used for pain relief and as a substitute for opiate detoxing. Some users report that it gives them a euphoric feeling.

Kratom - Legal Status and Law

Kratom is illegal / banned in Australia, Finland, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand (these countries impose sever penalties for possession of the herb if arrested). Kratom is legal in most other countries, including the United States and all of Europe. The Legal status can and does change, so be sure the legality of kratom where you live before using it.

A handful of people in Malaysia and possibly other countries are lobbying their governments to allow medical research into kratom as a potential prescription substance. However as of January 2007, Malaysia is moving to make kratom more illegal rather than less, and plans to reclassify it under the dangerous drugs law rather than the less severe poisonous substances laws.

Although kratom is un-scheduled, and completely legal, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has become aware of kratom in recent months, and has added it to their list of "Drugs and Chemicals of Concern". The DEA released an article on Kratom that can be found in our news section. Lets hope this dosent progress any further.

Ironically Kratom is banned in the country it originated from. Thailand's national and indigenous kratom plant or trees was prohibited by law on August 3rd, 1943 (Kratom Act 2486). The law makes planting the tree illegal and requires all existing kratom trees to be cut down. This law is impossible to enforce and has proven not effective. Today, in Thailand, Kratom is classed in the same category as cocaine and heroin by Thai Law. As little as an ounce of extract is punishable by death. As with prohibition laws elsewhere in the world, this has succeeded only at increasing black market prices. Also the related species, Mitragyna javanica, is often used as a substitute to get around the law. This strain is not considered as effective.
