Gunpowder tea leaves stay fresh longer than any other green tea leaves due to its compressed form. Gunpowder green is higher in caffeine than most other green teas (35-40 mg/8 oz serving) and is commonly used by athletes to improve endurance over periods of 3-6 hours.

Green Tea

Green tea is rich in powerful antioxidants, and has been known to fight viruses and slow aging. Green tea aids in weight loss, reduces "bad" cholesterol, boosts the immune system, and is also associated with the prevention of cancer. Green tea is widely used as a natural preservative in food and cosmetics. It even looks fresh and healthy! Green helps overweight people shed excess fat without side effects. It may help modulate calorie and fat burning through the sympathetic nervous system, the adrenal glands and specific nerve chemicals. Green tea shows fat-burning properties beyond those explained by its caffeine content.

The Health Benefits of Gunpowder Green Tea

Like other green teas, the gunpowder variety is associated with a number of important health benefits. Consumed plain, green tea also provides zero-calorie refreshment, making it a friendly choice if you're watching your waistline. Green tea usually contains caffeine, however, which may cause restlessness, anxiety and upset stomach in large doses -- or even in moderate doses if you're sensitive to caffeine.

Video of the Day

A Friendly Burst

Gunpowder green tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, just like all varieties of green tea. Although the leaves are the same as those in other teas, they're presented a bit differently: gunpowder tea leaves are rolled into small pellets that expand when steeped, releasing the flavor and nutrients. The tea's health rewards mainly come from flavonoids called catechins, which influence cell-signaling pathways, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. The institute notes that, although existing flavonoid research appears promising, more clinical trials are needed to confirm the benefits.

A Stronger Immune System

Green tea may help fend off colds and influenza, providing extra protection during the flu season. In a study published in "Journal of the American College of Nutrition" in 2007, researchers followed subjects who took either green tea capsules or a placebo twice daily for three months. They found that 32 percent fewer people in the green tea group experienced symptoms of colds and flus and that levels of illness-fighting gammadelta T cells were also higher compared to the placebo group.

A Healthier Heart

Several studies indicate that drinking green tea may lower your risk of cardiovascular disease, according to Harvard Health Publications. Although not conclusive, the research suggests that green tea might lower triglyceride and "bad" LDL cholesterol levels. High cholesterol and triglyceride levels may damage the artery walls, contributing to a condition called atherosclerosis, or thickening of the arteries. Atherosclerosis is associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, which means green tea could help prevent these potentially fatal events.

A Longer Life

One large-scale study in Japan, published in "The Journal of the American Medical Association" in 2006, indicates a possible link between green tea consumption and a longer life span. The study followed 40,530 adults over 11 years and found that those who drank the most green tea were less likely to die from any of the causes studied, with the exception of cancer. Those who drank more than 5 cups per day received the greatest benefit. However, Harvard Health Publications warns against drinking that much green tea, citing possible risk of kidney stones and other side effects. Therefore, two or three cups per day may be a more reasonable goal.

How to Make Gunpowder

Gunpowder, also called black powder, is a simple mixture of saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal. The trickiest part of making black powder is sourcing these three supplies. Once you find them, you mix them together and create an explosive black meal. Be extremely cautious when handling black powder, and make sure to store it away from heat and flame. Read on to learn more about how to make gunpowder.

Caffeine in Gunpowder Tea

All green tea varieties are produced from the Camellia sinensis plant. Depending on the variety, the leaves, stem and buds of the plant are used. Gunpowder green tea is a specific variety of green tea that is grown in a specific region and rolled in a particular manner. Like all green teas, gunpowder green tea contains caffeine.

Video of the Day

Gunpowder Green Tea

Gunpowder green tea has been in existence since the Tang Dynasty. It is rolled tightly to assume the appearance of gunpowder pellets. The balls do not unroll during storage, and only unravel when they are exposed to water, opening to become olive-green leaves. Gunpowder green tea is more concentrated than other green tea varieties because it is more tightly rolled. It can have a slight smoky scent with a light lemon aftertaste, although the overall effect is relatively mellow.

Caffeine Content

All green teas contain between 2 and 4 percent caffeine. The specific caffeine content for gunpowder green tea depends on a number of factors, including how much tea is used in relation to water and how long the tea is allowed to steep. The less tea to water you use and the shorter the steeping time, the lower the caffeine content of your tea. Because gunpowder green tea is very tightly rolled, a smaller amount of dried tea will provide more caffeine than other more loosely rolled green tea varieties.

Consumption and Side Effects

Medline Plus states that green tea is likely safe for most adults to consume, so long as it is done in moderation. Drinking more than five cups of green tea a day may cause a variety of side effects. These include insomnia, headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears and heartburn. Green tea consumption may reduce iron absorption and too much green tea can actually be fatal as the caffeine levels become too high. A fatal dose of caffeine is considered to be between 10 and 14 grams.

Precautions

Green tea can interact with medication or other existing conditions. Limit your green tea consumption if you are either pregnant or breast-feeding. Two cups of green tea is equal to 200 milligrams of caffeine, which is the recommended limit to avoid miscarriage and other negative effects. If you suffer from anemia, anxiety disorders, bleeding disorders, heart conditions, diabetes or liver disease, consult your doctor before beginning consuming large amounts of green tea.

Horrified viewers were left throwing up during the sickening gore-filled scenes of the the BBC drama Gunpowder last night.

The show chronicles the notorious plot to blow up the House of Lords in 1605, with Kit Harington playing his ancestor and mastermind of the plan, Robert Catesby.

However, as viewers tuned into the eagerly anticipated period series, many were left with a foul taste in their mouths when a young priest was hung, drawn and quartered alive.

'Thank you #Gunpowder. I didn't want to throw up but I did! I know that sort of violence happened but did not want to see it graphically,' one fan wrote.

'This execution scene is the most painful thing I've ever witnessed on TV.'

Others remarked, 'Eek! The violence! Very disturbing #Gunpowder.'

In the grotesque sequence, Daniel Smith (Thom Ashley) is dropped from the gallows and sliced open before his insides are ripped from his body as he issues ear-piercing screams.

The priest also has his hands and feet chopped off in the vile torture scenes, dubbed by one fan as one of the 'most painful scenes on television'.

And as if that wasn't enough, the executioner then goes onto proudly show off the priest's head as a trophy kill to the crowd after it is dipped it in tar.

Elsewhere in the show, Lady Dorothy (Sian Webber) is paraded through the cheering crowds in bare feet and a nightdress.

The humiliating scenes bare a striking similarity to that of Cersei's nude walk of shame in Game Of Thrones' iconic season five finale.

Lady Dorothy is then stripped to be executed and crushed beneath what appeared to be four kettle-bells.

Reflecting on the violent project, series star Harington hailed the historic drama as 'his baby'.

Catholics outlawed by the Crown

In 1603, English Catholics were excited and hopeful on hearing that James VI of Scotland, the son Mary Queen of Scots, would be Elizabeth I successor to the English throne.

Their religion had been outlawed since 1570, when the Pope excommunicated Elizabeth and Catholics were forced to practice in secret or face persecution.

They were forbidden to hear mass and made to attend Anglican services, with fines issued to those who refused to comply.

At first, rumours said James had a more liberal and open mind to Catholicism.

But, despite early promising signs, he became unhappy with the growing strength of the Catholic community.

During a conference at Hampton Court in 1604, James announced his 'utter detestation of Catholicism' and expelled all priests and Jesuits.

Clergymen found practicing the religion faced gory executions, while their flock faced time in prison and hefty fines.

He said: 'I loved being involved as a producer in this from genesis, from coming up with the idea to finding a brilliant writer that wanted to do it with us, to finding a brilliant director who wanted to direct it with us, to casting it.

'You know, I was involved from the very start. I understand now what they mean when they say it's my baby.'

Viewers, however, flooded social media with their disgust at its savage violence which left little to the imagination.

'#Gunpowder is a difficult one. Many will accept and continue to watch such harsh violence while others may choose to turn it off,' one person wrote.

'#Gunpowder is really good as it does not focus on Guy Fawkes, but the sectarian violence which took place centuries ago. What's changed?'

'Kit Harington's good looks are getting me through all this violence tbh.'

The BBC came under the firing line from viewers who slammed the broadcaster for the 'gratuitous violence' which played out on the small screen.

MP Andrew Bridgen said: 'The BBC are a law unto themselves. If the BBC intended to shock, they certainly have done.'

One audience member said on social media: 'I didn't want to throw up but I did. I know that sort of violence happened but did not want to see it graphically.'

Another described it as the 'most painful thing I've ever witnessed on TV', while a third wrote: 'I found the violence in Gunpowder far too horrifying.'

Fans wrote: 'Gunpowder, on BBC, was the worst program I have ever seen, I had to switch over. Horrendous violence.'

'This may be history but I cannot watch such gratuitous violence #Gunpowder' Really not entertaining, any excuse for post watershed violence.'

'BBC doing Got style violence *yawns* hope the story gets going soon #gunfawkes #Gunpowder'

'F*****g hell. Gunpowder. Just switched it on. Advisory warnings or not, I'll be amazed if there aren't any complaints about the violence.'

The BBC has defended the scenes, claiming they were historically accurate, and said that viewers were warned before the start of the show.

A spokesman said: 'The scenes aired after 9.30pm with a clear warning given to viewers before the episode started.

'The methods depicted are grounded in historical fact and reflect what took place during the time of the gunpowder plot.'

My kinda ghetto fall back green. A bit weak, a bit bitter, but still tasty for a cup over orgo. Overall what I’d expect from 500g of tea for $3.

“ghetto fall back” made me laugh. I’m imagining a hip hop video about the gangsta life and having to give up high quality gunpowder to get street cred. Then again, I don’t listen to rap, so there may actually be something like that already ;)

One of the best green teas in it’s PRICE RANGE .

I bought this from an Middle Eastern grocery store (Finland) at 1€/100g, it is hard to find any cheaper tea.

Taking into account it’s price, this tea has a surprisingly rich taste. Usually tea this cheap have hardly any taste or they just come out plain bitter. This one has a clear smokey aroma and a dusky taste.

In 70°-75°C water for 2:00 minutes. I add 15 seconds for every re-brew. Unfortunately, this tea can handle only two proper brews, the third one will have not much of the taste left (only the bitterness). This gunpowder gets bitter easier than most of the gun powders, so don’t exceed the brewing time.

It seems quite tightly rolled, but it’s dustier than a typical gunpowder. The dust is clearly visible at the bottom of a tea cup after drinking. The dusty texture is probably one of the reasons this gunpowder gets bitter so easily.

A good everyday tea for someone who drinks a lot of green tea. I drink this as my morning tea, since I usually don’t have time to do so many brews in the morning, so the tea doesn’t get wasted. I have this always on my tea shelf for everyday use.

Tip: This is also a good choice for making Marrakech Mint tea (which I like drinking a lot in summer when there is fresh green mint available in Finland), since the gunpowder used for that is supposed to get easily bitter to balance the ridiculous amount of sugar. I’d say that any delicate gunpowder would get a bit wasted for Marrakech Mint, since the mint and the sugar easily overrides the delicate taste in the tea.

Gunpowder Green Tea

Gunpowder green tea is a type of tea that has been rolled into pellets. When brewed and steeped, the tea pellets will "explode" or open into a longer leaf.

This appealing tea is also called pearl or bead tea because of its unusual appearance.

While the origin of the tea-related term "gunpowder" is uncertain, it is thought to have come from the shape of the pellets, which resemble the black powder pellets used in early guns.

Yet, when brewed, the tea has an appealing smoky flavor. So it is possible that the term originated from the taste as opposed to the shape of the tea pellets.

Gunpowder tea comes from specific provinces in China, mostly the Zhejiang Province, and dates back to the year 600. It did not become popular until the tea was introduced in Taiwan in the 1800s.

Today, gunpowder tea is rolled by machines, though some of the higher grades of tea are still hand rolled. Rolling the leaves keeps them from breaking and allows for lengthy storage time - decades, in some instances. The process also keeps the flavor in the leaves.

This tea generally has a more yellowish color than other green teas. Some people describe the flavor as smoky, coppery, grassy, or minty. Coffee lovers are said to enjoy this tea more than others. Gunpowder tea goes well with vegetables, seafood, or pork.

Like all types of tea, Gunpowder tea is derived from the Camellia sinensis tea plant. All green teas processed differently from black, oolong, or white teas. Green tea leaves are steamed, which halts oxidization.

The lack of fermentation keeps antioxidants and other compounds in the tea leaves, which accounts for the tea's health-based attributes.

Green tea has been has been a folk remedy for centuries. Research in recent years has confirmed the practice of using tea to promote wellness and ward off health issues.

This tea is rich in polyphenols, which are strong antioxidants that help improve your health and keep disease away.

Some of the health benefits of gunpowder green tea include helping to fight heart disease, arthritis, and immune system issues.

Green tea helps prevent tooth decay and serves as a weight loss aid. It can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure, stabilize blood sugar, and gives your skin a healthy glow.

Gunpowder tea has more caffeine in it than regular green tea, so it may serve as a stimulant for some people.

When buying this tea, look for shiny pellets. This indicates freshness. Select tea with small-sized pellets. Larger pellets indicate a lower quality tea.

High-quality gunpowder green tea will be rolled tightly into small pellets that maintain their shape regardless of time in storage.

You may also find different varieties of this tea under these terms: pinhead gunpowder tea, Pingshui gunpowder tea, Formosa tea, or Ceylon gunpowder.

Each has a distinctive flavor variation so you may want to sample of number of gunpowder brews to see which you most prefer. Because the pellets open up to expose the rest of the leaf, you do not need to use a lot of this tea when brewing.

  • To brew this tea, use 1 tsp of loose leaves per 5.5 ozs of water.
