TransFair e.V., founded in 1992, is the national Fairtrade organization for the German market. National Fairtrade organizations license the FAIRTRADE Certification Mark on products and promote Fairtrade in their territory. TransFair e.V. is supported by 33 member organizations, such as Brot für die Welt, misereor, terre des hommes, Welthungerhilfe or Unicef. As founding member TransFair e.V. helped to establish the umbrella organization Fairtrade International in 1997. There are 19 national Fairtrade organizations covering 24 countries. Fairtrade International is in charge of setting and reviewing the international Fairtrade Standards.

Fairtrade provides a link between producers and consumers in international markets.

Fairtrade is the world’s leading certification system for socially just sustainability in trade. We place an emphasis on people in developing countries and emerging economies. Our mission: to improve the living standards and employment conditions of the most disadvantaged small-scale producers through fair terms of trade, and in so doing, to combat poverty in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Around 1150 producers in no less than 70 countries are members of the Fairtrade system. Fairtrade benefits 1.4 million small-scale farmers and workers. Fairtrade products are now available in 120 countries.

Instead of trading in products directly, Fairtrade awards the FAIRTRADE Mark to premium quality products that are certified as fairly traded. Why? To generate greater awareness for sustainable consumption.

Currently, 250 companies sell over 2500 Fair-trade products in Germany. These products fall into 19 different product categories, from coffee and tea, to flowers, bananas, cocoa beans, sugar and cotton. Products bearing the FAIRTRADE Mark are sold in 42,000 retail outlets. Over 20,000 cafes and restaurants serve Fairtrade coffee and hot chocolate.

80 % of consumers in Germany know the FAIRTRADE Mark. In Germany, one in every five households buys Fairtrade products (Source: GfK Study, 2013).

Fairtrade stands for fair, certified raw materials at every stage of the value chain. Products bearing the FAIRTRADE Mark are produced and traded according to internationally recognized Fairtrade standards.

These standards revolve around:

Stable minimum prices for producers cover the cost of sustainable production and provide a safety net in case of a crash in world market prices.

The payment of the additional Fairtrade Premium makes it possible to invest in social causes, infrastructure and education, such as the building of new schools or medical centres. How our premiums are used is decided democratically by the producers themselves.

These include a total ban on exploitation through child labour, discrimination and forced labour. We also support the freedom of assembly of our producers.

We are particularly keen to support environmentally friendly and sustainable production, as well as fixed mark-ups for organic farming.

Fairtrade producers are free to decide how to manage their projects. Fairtrade offers tools to improve productivity and quality, plus ways to access advanced funding.

Our Fairtrade standards are regularly monitored by FLO-Cert, an independent accreditation organisation. FLO-Cert uses a completely transparent, internationally uniform certification method in accordance with accreditation standard ISO 65 (the world‘s leading quality norm for organizations operating a product certification system).

Fairtrade has been proven to raise the level and predictability of producer income. Our work also has a positive impact on rural development in our regions of operation (Source: independent impact study of CEval, University of the Saarland, 2012).

Only Fairtrade allows its producers to own a share in the international Fairtrade system – real co-determination! Via three continental producer networks, the producers have a 50% say in decision-making.

With Fairtrade, you can work directly on environmental projects of your choice in developing countries and offset carbon emissions within the Fairtrade value chain. New Fairtrade environmental standards will help producer organisations react to the impacts of climate change.

Mocambo: Kaffee ist Abenteuer und Leidenschaft

Wer denkt, dass es nur original italienischen Espresso jenseits der Alpen gibt, der irrt sich. Die Kaffeerösterei Mocambo wurde 1985 von Giuseppe Drago in Deutschland in Radevormwald gegründet. Als Betreiber eines Gastronomiebetriebes stellte Guiseppe schnell fest, dass es jenseits der Alpengrenze keinen guten Espresso zu erwerben gab. Inspiriert von seiner Leidenschaft für Kaffee, machte er es kurzer Hand zu seinem Beruf. In einem kleinen Raum von gerade mal zwanzig Quadratmetern fing er an die ersten Kaffeebohnen zu rösten.
