Earlier this year, we presented the Solino Project through a guest post by the head of the German company Frosta, Felix Ahlers . Now, Solino Coffee has become the first coffee roasted, ground and packaged entirely in Ethiopia to be available in Germany. We are very happy about this success and hope that the customers in Europe will honour this project, which creates qualified and sustainable jobs in Ethiopia. Solino coffee is available at retailer Karstadt Perfetto throughout Germany.

Bereits im Sommer hatten wir mit einem Gastbeitrag von Frosta-Chef Felix Ahlers über dessen Kaffeeprojekt in Äthiopien berichtet. Nun gibt es mit Solino Kaffee den ersten komplett in Äthiopien verarbeiteten und verpackten Kaffee überall in Deutschland bei Karstadt Perfetto zu kaufen! Out of Africa

Out of Africa is one of the most popular brands belonging to the Kenya Nut Company (KNC). Out of Africa is one of the leading producers of nuts, teabags and coffee in East Africa. The brand is dedicated to sustainable organic agriculture.

Out of Africa produces roasted coffee, green coffee and tea bags. Coffee is available in ground and bean and is organic with full traceability.

Ethiopia is the largest producer of coffee in sub-Saharan Africa, responsible for 4.4% of total world coffee production (The Africa Report, April 2014).

Solino is one of the first fully made-in-Ethiopia to reach Europe. This means that the growing, harvesting, processing, roasting, packaging and branding is entirely done in Ethiopia.

Solino is an arabica highland coffee from the areas of Yirgacheffee, Harar and Sidamo. It is roasted in a traditional drum roaster at very low temperature for 22 minutes. This guarantees the best possible aroma and very low acidity of our coffee.

A grower’s co-operative representing and owned by 8,000 local farmers the Iria-ini Tea Factory is an independent company which operates with the support and assistance of the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) and is a great example of a real Kenyan success story.

The tea is grown in the scenic highlands of the Mathira division of Nyeri North District and the rich mountainous soils give their tea the delicious and refreshing flavour that led Marks and Spencer to source them for their own M&S brand teas. The photo above shows the M&S tea which was packed at source at Iria-ini.

Meru Herbs

Meru, Mt. Kenya, Kenya

A co-op of approximately 500 farmers situated on the slopes of Mount Kenya, Meru Herbs produce, process, and provide a range of certified organic products, available through Fair Trade distribution channels.

For generations the rich volcanic soil of Meru has allowed farmers to grow the most succulent fruits and vegetables. Meru Herbs have captured the identity, vitality and taste of the region in their high-quality teas, jams, and sauces.

Meru has obtained an organic certification from the English company Soil Association Certification Ltd. and today it sends a significant part of its production to Europe, Japan, and the US. They produce organic certified tea bags for both People Tree and Altromercato.

Das One Young World Summit in Zürich – Waris’ Erfahrungsbericht

“Letztes Wochenende war ich zur ONE Young World Konferenz in Zürich als Councellor eingeladen, an der mehr als 1.200 junge Aktivistinnen und Aktivistenaus 194 Ländern teilgenommen haben und tolle Projekte vorgestellt haben. Besonders stolz war ich natürlich auf die zahlreichen afrikanischen Beiträge.

Wael Ghonim, der mit seiner Social Media Kampagne „Wir sind alle Khaled Said“ die Revolution in Ägypten mitinitiierte und Oscar Morales, der kolumbianischer Aktivist, der über Facebook 12 Millionen Menschen gegen die Gräueltaten der FARC Rebellen mobilisierte, sprachen über die Möglichkeiten, die Twitter und Facebook für Aufstände, Aufklärungskampagnen, unterdrückte Minderheiten, Demonstrationen und Revolutionen bieten. Aber ich habe auch Freunde, die ich schon lange kenne, in Zürich getroffen. Jamie Oliver stellte seine neue Initiative “Food Revolution” vor. Jamie setzt sich für eine bessere Ernährung von Jugendlichen und Kindern ein, da “zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte, mehr Menschen an Übergewicht als an Unterernährung sterben.“ (“For the first time in history, being too fat is killing more people than being underweight.”)

Ich traf Bob Geldof, Mitbegründer der Organisation ONE, der Kritik an dem aktuellen Zustand der Welt übte, der ich nur zustimmen kann. In seiner Rede, setzte er seine Hoffnung in die junge Generation von heute: “You’ve got to get us out of this mess because we have failed.“ (Ihr müsst uns aus diesem Mist herausholen, denn wir haben versagt).

In einer beeindruckenden und mitreißenden Rede sagte Erzbischof und Friedensnobelpreisträger Desmond Tutu, „dass wir eines Tages aufwachen werden und erkennen werden, dass wir alle eine große Familie sind.“ “It’s an incredible privilege for me who is less young to be here with you. Although you might not be aware of it you are fantastic, amazing creatures. One day you and I and all of us will wake up to the fact that we are actually all family. God sees all of you and at One Young World God begins to smile.” So wie ich, glaubt er daran dass uns eine größere Macht schützen wird.

Als Councellor durfte ich Projekte von jungen Delegierten, wie dem Umweltaktivisten Parker Liautaud, vorstellen. Parker hatte einen Traum. Er wollte der jüngste Mensch sein der den Nordpol erreichte. Mit 15 Jahren brach er zu seiner ersten Expedition auf, die aber aufgrund des Klimawandels und des schmelzenden Eises scheiterte. Mit 16 schaffte er es dann den Nordpol auf Skiern zu erreichen. Parker hat zahlreiche Wasser- und Gesteinsproben mitgebracht, um zu zeigen wie weit die Klimakatastrophe, die natürlich auch Afrika betrifft, bereits fortgeschritten ist. Und er hat bereits eine eigene Organisation „The Last Degree“ gegründet.

Ich traf James Chau, Anchorman des chinesischen Nachrichtensenders CCTV und UN Aids Goodwill Ambassador, mit dem ich über mein Buch „Wüstenblume“, mein Leben und die aktuelle Hungersnot in Somalia sprach. Bariq Rifki, bekanntester Hip-Hop Star aus Djibouti, baut derzeit eine Schule in Djibouti auf, in der Obdachlose gratis Unterricht erhalten können.

Gifty Pearly, Repräsentantin für Ghana, hat 2011 die Greight Foundation gegründet. Die Stiftung schult Mädchen und Frauen aus sozial benachteiligten Familien, versucht, die Mädchen in ihrem Selbstbewusstsein zu stärken und sie in unterschiedlichen Lebenssituationen zu unterstützen. Die Stiftung ist bereits in Ghana, Kenia, Nepal und Zambia tätig.

From September 1st to September 4th 2011, the second annual One Young World Summit will be held in Zurich / Switzerland. The summit seeks to bring toghether the world’s “future heads of government, the CEOs, the bosses of NGOs, the big thinkers and game-changers” in one summit, were there will be able to meet leading figures of today, such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Bob Geldof and Muhammad Yunus, Mo Ibrahim, Fatima Bhutto and Waris Dirie, who will act as counsellors during the event.

Waris Dirie will take up her role as a counsellor alongside an impressive list of great personalities including Bob Geldof, Desmond Tutu, Muhammad Yunus, Prince Haakan and Mette-Marit of Norway, Kofi Annan, Bernard Kouchner, John Kerry and many more.

” I am honoured to have been invited as a counsellor for the One Young World Challenge this year. This is a great event that brings together many influential people and visionaries of today with the youth, those people that will shape the future of our world. I am very much looking forward to the many many interesting conversations and meetings that lie ahead of me in the next few days”, Waris Dirie says one day before the start of the event.

A logo for human rights: Over 15.000 designs submitted

The design contest “A logo for Human Rights” has yielded an incredible 15.296 submissions by the end of the application period yesterday. All designs will now be reviewed by the Jury, of which Waris Dirie is also a member. “I am amazed at the number of submissions and very excited to see all these great designs”, Waris Dirie said at the end of the submission period.

One hundred submitted designs will enter a second stage of review by the Jury, who will then choose the ten finalists. These designs will be put online for the community voting. Between August 27th and September 17th 2011, the online community will be able to vote for their favourite design. The winning logo will be presented during the 66th General Assembly of the United Nations. Waris Dirie will attend the presentation of the Human Rights Logo on September 23rd in New York.

Ein Logo für Menschenrechte: Über 15.000 Entwürfe eingereicht

Beim Wettbewerb „Ein Logo für Menschenrechte“ sind bis zum Anmeldeschluss sensationelle 15.296 Entwürfe eingegangen. Diese werden nun von der Jury, zu der auch Waris Dirie gehört, gesichtet. „Ich bin absolut begeistert von der riesigen Anzahl an Einsendungen und schon sehr gespannt auf die vielen tollen Entwürfe“, sagte Waris Dirie nach dem Ende der Einreichungsfrist.

Hundert Entwürfe kommen in einem zweiten Schritt nochmals vor die Jury, die aus diesen 100 Einsendungen zehn Logoentwürfe auswählt. Über diese zehn Finalisten stimmt die Internet-Community ab. Die Abstimmung beginnt am 27. August, bis 17. September hat die Internet-Community die Möglichkeit über die zehn besten Logos abzustimmen. Das Gewinnerlogo wird am 23. September 2011 im Rahmen der 66. Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen in New York vorgestellt. Auch Waris Dirie wird an der Präsentation des Gewinnerlogos in New York teilnehmen.

Waris Dirie and the Desert Flower Foundation support the Metropolitan Police’s educational movie about FGM in the UK

Female Genital Mutilation continues to be a problem throughout the United Kingdom. Especially during the summer holidays, many girls are either being taken to their parents’ home countries for the procedure or being mutilated in the UK. According to research conducted in the UK, up to 6000 girls in London are at risk of undergoing FGM. In the UK as a whole, as many as 22.000 are threatened.

“FGM is a crime against a child, a crime against humanity”, says Waris Dirie. “It’s abuse. It’s absolutely criminal and we have to stop it!”

The film “Cut – some wounds never heal” was produced by schoolgirls aged 12 to 15 from the Lilian Baylis Technology School in London who all come from immigrant families from East Africa and are affected by FGM. They were supported by the organisation Kids Task Force and TV Producer Rob White. The movie will be made available to all schools in the UK for educational purposes. The movie was financed by the Metropolitan Police and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The Desert Flower Foundation also supports the project of a group of school girls in Bristol, who produced a short film about the issue themselves. Despite opposition from parts of the immigrant communities, the movie was successfully screened in a cinema in central Bristol last week.

First time in the westend for me! I don’t know why but I’ve never been to the westend before. It is a super cool area and so my first cafe on the list is “Cafe Gollier”. Nevertheless we went there Sunday afternoon, they still had great cakes and sweets. i decided to have a chocolate-cherry cake with cappuccino. The prices are more than fair (see pics). The location is top, but unfortunately you can’t catch a sunny spot in the afternoon in autumn because the houses in front of the cafe are too tall.

Worth a visit, cool place but still cosy and nice!

Cafe Lotti @Schleißheimer Str. 13 München Munich

After a long break visiting cafes in Munich, I start the cafe journey again. This time Cafe Lotti was our choice. It is a cafe located close to the Stiglmaierplatz with a very girlish furniture, white, pink and red dominating. The cafe was good, the tea really good ( we had a cappurccino and a lemon-ginger tea). Everybody tells me that the breakfast is gorgeous, but I never had time to visit.

If you are up to girly talk and super sweet sourrounding, visit Cafe Lotti!

Caffe Solino @ Falkenstraße 17 München/ Munich

Solino Caffe is directly located on the Falkenstraße, which connects Kolumbusplatz with Mariahilfplatz. The café offers tables and chairs outside and you can sit in the sun from lunch-time to 6pm. This cafe does not only serve coffee or juices (+nice self-made drinks) but also snacks and changing lunch-sets. It is a “day-cafe” and so it is closed after 6:30pm.

Inside it is lovely decorated and parts of the decoration are for sale. The owner puts her focus on nice atmosphere, sweet details and an overall super sweet impression. Coffee is really good, we had a double espresso and a cappuccino. The prices are more than fair!

The only disadvantage is the location: directly at the Falkenstraße. You sit next to parking cars but the noise of the street is omnipresent. If you don’t sit there durign the peak hours of traffic (4pm-7pm) is way better. Nevertheless you have something to look at: Porsches and a lot of other cars are passing by.

KENNEDY Bar Cafe @ Am Rätschenbach 1 – 85435 Erding

KENNEDY Bar in Erding

This time, a little detour around Munich to Erding – Kennedy bar for breakfast. The Kennedy bar is a new bar -cafe mixture which is open every day from Monday to Sunday = everyday. We were sitting outside where they have different sizes tables. Under an umbrella you can really enjoy a Saturday morning! We went for the classical breakfast with egg, cheese (for the others bacon and ham) and a little bit of mustard. It looked gorgeous!! I haven’t had such a nice looking breakfast for a very long time…

Some fresh flower herbs made it even nice, the bread was very tasty but I have to say that it was too much cheese for me. I would have preferred a bit of jam instead, but it was really really good -> 4* breakfast. The classical breakfast included a fresh orange juice and a cappuccino, what I really think is a fair offer and it is hard to find those “menu-sets” for breakfast on the weekends.

If you visit this place, you should check out the restrooms, super nice and really special!

Herzogliches Bräustüberl Tegernsee@ Schloßpl. 1, 83684 Tegernsee

This not not a cafe but a really nice place to enjoy coffee and cake. First things first: the quality of coffee is really bad, but the cakes are good. The view cannot be better and this is the most relevant point when visiting Tegernsee. Tegernsee is located on the lake Tegernsee, in the south of Munich. This is a very popular place for visitors from UAE and Asian countries, but also “normal” day-visitor from Munich come to Tegernsee. There are some other possibilities to have coffee but this time, we stopped at the Bräuchstüberl.

As already said, the coffee is bad, but the view top!

Und wie immer in München: Es tut sich was, man muss nur hingucken. So verwandelte sich das be-glückert gerade erst in die Shotgun Sister Coffeebar und setzt jetzt vermehrt auf Nachhaltigkeit und Bio, das Henry hat Hunger versorgt uns mit dem vielleicht günstigsten Mittagessen der Stadt und der Monaco Velo Club lädt nicht nur Radl-Fans in sein schönes Café ein, in dem es im Sommer auch Ballabeni Eis gibt. Jetzt müssen wir wirklich nicht mehr auf die andere Isar-Seite.

Wo früher noch das be-glückert war, ist seit Anfang Mai die Shotgun Sister Coffeebar. Die Einrichtung ist größtenteils gleich geblieben, aber auf der Karte hat sich Einiges getan: nachhaltiger und biologischer möchte Besitzerin Katharina den Laden schmeißen. Zum Frühstück gibt es belegte Brote, Bowls Müsli und selbstgemachte Erdnussbutter. Mittags kann man sich seine herzhafte Reis-Quinoa-Bowl noch mit Schafskäse, Avcoado & Co. toppen. Für nachmittags bietet das Shotgun Sister frisch gebackenes Bananebrot – und natürlich den Kuchen von Kuchentratsch, der ist geblieben!

Das Café Hüller fast direkt an der Isar ist ein absoluter Alles-Könner: eine leckere Frühstückskarte, Klassiker wie Pfannkuchen mit Ricotta, Tomate und Rucola, Kaffee von der Rösterei Fausto in Giesing, hausgemachte, wunderbare Kuchen (weiße Schokolade mit Himbeer oder Erdnussbutter-Schoko!) – und dazu noch eine täglich wechselnde Mittagskarte, die keine Wünsche offen lässt und auch für den kleinen Geldbeutel gemacht ist. Wer nach einem langen Isarspaziergang hungrig ist und kalte Füße hat, der kann sich hier bei herzhaften Gerichten die Füße und den Magen wärmen. Und wer im Sommer auf der Suche nach einer tollen Sommerterrasse ist, der ist hier genau richtig.

Gerade einmal 15 Quadratmeter misst das kleine Henry hat Hunger in der Zeppelinstraße in der Au. In dem urgemütlichen Mini-Laden mit nur vier Tischen serviert Besitzerin Sandra ausgezeichneten Fausto Caffé, kocht Mittagessen und backt Kuchen. Für 5 Euro (!) gibt es im Henry zwischen Isar und Mariahilfplatz Tagesgerichte wie Flammkuchen, Quiche, Gnocchi oder Aufläufe. Außerdem zwei frisch gebackene Kuchen pro Tag. Und dann ist der Laden auch noch so schön, dass man danach noch für einen Kaffee bleiben muss.

Noch ein kleiner Geheimtipp in der Au: Das bunte Solino zwischen Mariahilf- und Kolumbusplatz. Hier gleicht kein Möbelstück dem anderen, die Einrichtung ist herrlich durchmischt. In den Regalen stehen kleine Designstücke, die man kaufen kann – von der Laptoptasche bis zum Notizbuch. Mittags gibt es neben Salaten, Suppen und Quiche auch wechselnde Pastagerichte. Unbedingt herkommen sollte man allerdings für die hausgemachten Kuchen und Tartes.

Außerdem gibt es natürlich Kaffee und italienische Snacks. Das Radler-Café ist der Treffpunkt für alle Fahrrad-verrückten Münchner, die hier eine Pause direkt an der Isar einlegen können. Wer übrigens im Club-Outfit kommt, bekommt auch mal einen Espresso aufs Haus – wäre also eine Überlegung wert.

Zugegeben, es ist bei diesen Öffnungszeiten nicht ganz leicht, dem Café Edelweiss im Herzen von Obergiesing endlich einmal einen Besuch abzustatten. Zumindest, wenn man nicht gerade unter der Woche frei hat oder um's Eck arbeitet. Für all jene, ist das süße Café mit seinem Mittagsangebot dafür ein echter Geheimtipp – täglich wechselnde Gerichte für nur 5 Euro. Wer ein Getränk, einen Nachtisch und einen Kaffee dazu haben möchte, bestellt das Menü, das mit 8,40 Euro ebenfalls günstig daher kommt. Alle Speisen hier sind hausgemacht, außerdem gibt's fertige Backmischungen und Müsli für daheim zu kaufen.

Die Zimtschneckenfabrik in Obergiesing kann nur einem Walt-Disney-Film entsprungen sein. Hier werden täglich bis zu 300 Zimtschnecken gebacken und unter anderem an das Café Fräulein, das Vorhoelzer, White Rabbit's Room und die Kaserne de Janeiro im Container Collective geliefert. Mitten in der Backstube gibt es aber auch ein Café, in dem es rund um die Uhr nach süßen Zimtschnecken riecht. Neben der klassischen Schnecke gibt es auch eine Variante mit Apfel und leckere Törtchen: „Kleine Fräuleins“. Ein Ort, an dem man am liebsten seinen nächsten Geburtstag feiern möchte – kann man zum Glück auch.

Der neue Place-to-be in der Au ist das kleine Fleckerl Island in München: Besitzerin Stephanie macht in ihrem Café Blá hervorragenden Kaffee aus eigener Röstung und künftig auch kleine Mittagsgerichte. Unbedingt probieren müsst ihr den isländischen Skyr-Kuchen mit Crumble-Boden und Joghurt-Creme. Außerdem gibt es hier Müsli und Waffeln als süße Variante mit Früchten oder herzhaft mit vegetarischem Topping oder Lachs. So oder so ist das Café Blá eine echte Bereicherung für die Gegend und eine super Einkehr nach dem nächsten Isarspaziergang.

Das Café Käthe in der Oberen Au ist ein ganz besonderer Ort. Mit viel Liebe werden hier jede Menge Tees, guter Kaffee und selbstgemachte Kuchen serviert. An den Wänden gibt es wechselnde kleine Ausstellungen zu sehen. Ein bisschen öko und alternativ kommt das kleine Künstler-Café daher, ist aber vor allem eines: gemütlich und wahnsinnig sympathisch. Die Münchner Schickeria trifft man woanders. Unbedingt probieren: Den Karottenkuchen!

Eine echte Kaffee-Oase mitten am Auermühlbach – das Caffé Fausto röstet in seinen Räumlichkeiten in der Kraemer'schen Künstmühle nicht nur wunderbaren Kaffee, den es in sämtlichen Lokalen in Giesing und anderswo zu trinken und kaufen gibt, sondern beherbergt auch ein süßes Cafés, das sowohl innen als auch draußen auf der Terrasse genügend Platz bietet. Zu Essen gibt es Snacks wie Toast und Panini, zwischen 11 und 16 Uhr Mittagessen unter der Woche und leckeren Kuchen und Muffins. Geheimtipp: Samstag bis 14 Uhr kann man hier auch frühstücken. Und den leckeren Fausto Kaffee kann man hier natürlich auch kaufen.
