Stiff Bull aphrodisiac coffee slapped with FDA warning
This Malaysian coffee is no bull.
Stiff Bull, a coffee produced overseas that claims it will improve men’s libido and sexual performance, has been slapped with a warning from the Food and Drug Administration for containing an unlisted ingredient: desmethyl carbodenafil.
That hard-to-pronounce chemical is similar to the active ingredient sildenafil in Viagra. Like Viagra, desmethyl carbodenafil can have adverse interactions when consumed with nitrates, which are found in many prescription drugs for conditions like diabetes, heart disease and other illnesses. It can also lower blood-pressure levels to what the agency declares to be “dangerous levels.”
Stiff Bull Coffee is also infused with herbal ingredients like tongkat ali, maca root and guarana. The producer claims that the herbs naturally enhance a man's hormones and can stimulate a natural erection lasting up to three days.
Stiff Bull has since disputed the FDA's claim, saying that there was a mix-up of ingredients.
Speaking to Indy 100, Stiff Bull’s president Keith Hanson said that the problem was “a combination of things – one, the manufacturer of the coffee, located in Malaysia, had lots of different formulas, and he’d been importing his coffee in the US for 10 years. There were never any substances found.”
Instead, Hanson said, the manufacturer began to add desmethyl carbodenafil to offset the cost of the Maca Root and the Tongkat Ali, without his knowledge.
The company has not said whether the FDA's warning has had an adverse effect on sales of the coffee. According to The Daily Mail, more than 200,000 men in the U.S. order a shipment of the beverage each month.
The FDA, which identified the item during an inspection of international mail shipments, recently added the beverage to its list of Tainted Sexual Enhancement Products. The agency has warned consumers about almost three dozen products this year as a series of items have been found to include undeclared ingredients meant to enhance sexual function but were instead unlisted on the packaging and possibly harmful for users.
Though the product is not banned, the FDA is now encouraging health care professionals and patients "to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of this product" to the agency's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.

Introduction: Nitro Coffee
But before we start there's some important stuff you need to know about what we're dealing with, our friend caffeine.
*Caffeine is some potent stuff, take caution when working with it and when ingesting it.
The MSDS for caffeine is frightening, including such warnings as:
- Severe overexposure can cause death.
- Mutagenic for mammalian somatic cells (that's us).
- The substance may be toxic to heart, gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system (CNS).
- Can cause birth defects.
- Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage. Repeated exposure to a highly toxic material may produce general deterioration of health by an accumulation in one or many human organs.
In addition to caffeine I also brewed up some coca leaves, no big deal.
*Coca leaves are an alkaloid which are used as powerful stimulants, such as cocaine. Though coca leaves do have stimulant properties the leaves used in this project are far removed from actually doing cocaine (so no angry comments about doing drugs, hmm'kay?).
These coca leaves were bought online and shipped to the USA.
Whew! With all these warnings you'd think that upping the ante on an already potent drink would be crazy. And, you'd be right. So don't do this, I'm a trained professional.
Step 1: Tools + Materials
To make your own nitro coffee you'll need:
- High-caffeine energy drinks
- ground coffee
- coffee machine
- dried coca leaves (optional)
Step 2: The Brew
Start with a clean coffee machine.
Open the energy drinks and pour into coffee pot, I used 2 12oz energy drinks. This filled the pot up to about 5 cups (the maximum it could hold). Pour pot of energy drinks into reservoir. Do not overfill.
To really put this brew over the edge I added a few dried coca leaves on top of the ground coffee, you can choose your own variety. This additional step is entirely optional.
Step 3: The Sweetener
Tightly close lid on container and shake to mix until all particulate powder is dissolved.
The result is 20 cups of coffee in about 1/3 of the volume.
Step 4: The Milk (optional)
To make the milk substitute I thought there should be some relief from the caffeine overdose, so I used a mix of equal parts coffee cream and antacid.
Step 5: Conduct Testing

- blood pressure: The first number, systolic blood pressure, measures the maximum pressure exerted as the heart contracts, while the lower number indicates diastolic pressure, a measurement taken between beats, when the heart is at rest. -source
- memory test: each subject was given a set of 17 randomly chosen words to memorize in 5 minutes. Then, an hour later, asked to recite as many of the words as possible. For nitro coffee a new set of 17 similar-but-random words were chosen.
- pupil dilation: Conditions were consistent, but pupil dilation fluctuated, no reasonable data collected.
- straight line test:
- each subject attempted to draw a straight line between two points 3' apart . Results were unclear, neither of us could draw a straight line that long..
Step 7: Findings
In a debriefing after the tests, we discussed how the nitro coffee made us feel. We found that symptoms of large doses of nitro coffee resulted in:
- difficulty concentrating
- elation
- inability to focus on specific tasks
- sweaty palms / cold sweats
- numb mouth and fingertips
- general discomfort
- flushed face and neck
- dizzy or light headed
- uncomfortably energetic
Total caffeine consumption:
The findings show that each of us consumed about 4 times the regular amount of caffeine found in coffee. The results were a moderate increase in some areas, and a general inability to concentrate on any task for more than about a minute.
Though a fun experiment I'm not sure that nitro coffee would make a suitable replacement for regular coffee, so don't expect to see it in your local Starbucks yet.

I published this project in 2011, before nitrogen enriched coffee was a "thing". I like the cold brew nitrogen coffee, it's like morning beer :)

No, not really. The world's most deadly drink is Vodka and red bull. This is not far off.
It wasn't too unsafe. If you have a heart condition, unusual sensitivity to caffeine, or dislike the flavor of Red Bull, this is one you'll want to stay away from.

I *strongly* suggest that you at least remove the links to the coca leaves supplier. The leaves are illegal in the United States and prohibited acts under 21 USC 841 include:

So what happens to the cocaine they remove?
Probably sell it to pharmaceutical companies. Cocaine is a totally legit (when used by the correct people) topical anesthetic used by medical professionals such as Ear Nose & Throat specialists, though it's been largely superseded by related compounds such as benzocaine in the US. Doctors in other countries still use it because it's cheap.
Fortunately, there is nothing to worry about regarding the sale of these particular coca leaves! They have been processed (like decaffeinated coffee) to remove the illegal cocaine alkaloids, but still contain other legal and stimulating compounds. I have tried several products, like coca candy and a few leaves, and the flavor is unique and pleasant, and contains a little bit of pep. Nothing drastic compared to some energy drinks or a strong cup of regular coffee, but still worth the experience.
The "coca" product in this article is shipped from Charlotte, NC, or Boston, MA, via US Postal Service. Is it legal? Probably. Is it my business, or yours? No.

WHAT IF, you boiled the Red Bull down so it was a concentrated syrup of the sugar, taurine and caffeine and brewed the coffee with that??
Taurine and Caffeine are fairly volatile compounds and would likely not survive the process of boiling down. Old coffee is less caffeinated than fresh brewed, as well the second brew with the same beans yields decaffeinated coffee. Not sure on the taurine, but I expect it to have similar behavior.

This will probably have a "mild" laxative effect , like say , a total fill up of the porcelain throne , followed up by excessively farting highly statically charged clouds of noxious methane . In other words you would turn into the "red spot" on Jupiter. My daily dose of energy drinks is 4 and my heart does not even go faster.

The problem for me is that I am immune to High-caffeine energy drinks :( I can drink 4-5 of those at once without any effect (I do drink energy drinks, but only for the taste. I really like it :) ..and for thirst, of course). And a strong expresso only has a slight effect.

Why didn't you just use a caffetiere and lots of coffee grounds, brewed for longer?
The 'drip' coffee-machine only passes the water through once at a fixed rate, so you have to over-use coffee grinds.
The caffetiere, or french press, coffee maker can use (almost) as high a proportion of ground coffee to water as you like. It works by simply steeping the coffee grounds in water from a kettle, then pressing the grounds out of the brewed coffee.
I was restricting myself to the device used in the 'ible, and admit ignorance as to the meaning of caffetiere.
My point exactly, machines can't make MY coffee
I remember doing something similar. I mixed about 20 teaspoons of instant coffee granules, 30 teaspoons of brown sugar in a 600ml water bottle. The intention was to add a small amount to a glass of milk to make iced coffee. I did however end up drinking it straight in shots. *Please note, I never did, or intended to drink all that coffee at once. Simply to have a concentrated coffee syrup.

Caffeine can cause problems in large amounts and a drink like this would be a definite no-go for pregnant women, people with heart conditions, children or people sensitive to caffeine.

Ob die Menge im Kaffee tatsächlich die gleiche Wirkung bei Menschen hat, das wissen bis jetzt nur die Hersteller.
Der Kaffee soll zudem die Libido und das allgemeine Wohlbefinden verbessern - das hätten auch schon die asiatischen und südamerikanischen Einwohner vor Jahrhunderten gewusst (und genutzt).
Mehr als eine Tasse dürfe es aber pro Tag nicht sein. Außerdem raten die Hersteller Menschen mit Herzproblemen oder mit Bluthochdruck davon ab, den Heißmacher zu konsumieren. Genau aus diesem Grund warnt auch die amerikanische Gesundheitsbehörde FDA vor dem Getränk.

Laut ihrer Analyse ist der Wirkstoff im Kaffee nicht so natürlich wie angepriesen. Der Fakt, dass das Produkt einfach auf den Markt geworfen wurde, ohne es vorher dem offiziellen Check der Gesundheitsbehörden unterziehen zu lassen, deutet schon stark daraufhin, dass es sich um ein sehr fragwürdiges Produkt handelt.
Falls jemand allerdings trotzdem in die Versuchung kommt, sich das Zeug per Post zu bestellen, bedenke folgende Punkte:
I. Produkte, die als „Beziehungsretter“ auftreten, sind aller Voraussicht nach alles andere als das. Das kennen wir bereits von den Diätpillen, den Haarwuchsmitteln, den „So wirst du in einer Minute Millionär“-Webseiten und den anderen üblichen Verdächtigen.
II. Wenn du mehr Sex in deiner Beziehung wünschst, sprich doch einfach mit deiner Partnerin. Oder versuch‘s auf die ganz klassische Art: Sei nett, bring den Müll runter, spüle das Geschirr ab, koche etwas Leckeres, dimme das Licht und schau dir mit der Liebsten eine Schnulze von Liam Hemsworth oder Ryan Gosling an. Das wirkt besser als jeder Potenzkram, glaub uns da einfach.
III. Wenn ein Produkt dafür werben muss, dass es „gut schmeckt“ - oh Gott, lass bloß die Finger davon!
In Europa wird das Getränk allerdings ohnehin nicht allzu bald erhältlich sein. Hier sorgt das Vorsorgeprinzip dafür, dass der Hersteller erst beweisen muss, dass sein Produkt für den Konsumenten ungefährlich ist. Gut so.

TO ALMOST every man on this planet, the promise of a cuppa that helps them improve their performance in the bedroom may seem too good to be true.
Yet it seems there is a new product promising just that.
The Sun reports that Stiff Bull coffee claims to be an all-natural brew that will “save relationships”.

The product contains a blend of tongkat ali, maca root and guarana — ingredients that “have been used for centuries by people in Asia and South America to greatly improve sexual health, libido and overall wellness”.
Furthermore, the Stiff Bull website claims these ingredients “produces an awesome effect that can last up to two to three days”.
The potential for pranking your mates is enormous.
But there is a catch — a potentially dangerous catch.
Health experts have warned the coffee contains undeclared ingredients, which when mixed with other drugs can cause serious health problems, including heart disease which increases the risk of heart attack.
The Food and Drugs Administration in the US is urging men not to buy Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee.
Scientists at the FDA carried out lab tests on the brew and identified it contains desmethyl carbodenafil.

Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra, a drug that is approved to help men suffering erectile dysfunction.
The ingredient is not declared on the packaging, according to the FDA.
In a statement the FDA warned: “This undeclared ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs such as nitroglycerine and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.
“Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates.”

Tagelanger Effekt: Kaffee-Getränk soll für sexuelles Stehvermögen sorgen
In Asien und den USA sorgt derzeit ein Kaffee für Aufsehen, der ähnlich wie Viagra wirken soll. Als „Beziehungsretter“ wird „Stiff Bull“ beworben: Das Instant-Getränk aus Malaysia soll nicht nur wach machen, sondern auch das Sexualleben in Schwung bringen. Die natürlichen Inhaltsstoffe der Kaffeemischung wirken laut Hersteller bis zu drei Tage lang.
Kaffee soll Beziehungen retten
Die Kaffeemischung „Stiff Bull“ („Steifer Bulle“) soll im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes müde Glieder wieder in Schwung bringen. Das Instant-Getränk aus Malaysia wirke sich positiv auf das Sexualleben aus. Der Hersteller bezeichnet es auf seiner Webseite sogar als „Beziehungsretter“. Mit der angeblich rein pflanzlichen Mischung soll insbesondere Paaren geholfen werden, indem die Potenz des Mannes angeregt wird. Der Effekt soll sogar größer sein als bei dem Potenzmittel Viagra.
Drei natürliche Zutaten mit fantastischem Effekt
Die Wirkung sei laut Hersteller auf Tongkat Ali, die Maca-Wurzel und Guarana zurückzuführen. „Diese Kräuter, die im Dschungel Malaysias wachsen, und die von Menschen in Asien und Südamerika seit Jahrhunderten verwendet werden, verbessern die sexuelle Gesundheit, die Libido und das allgemeine Wohlbefinden“, so der Produzent.
„Die Kombination der drei Zutaten bewirkt eine fantastischen Effekt, der bis zu zwei bis drei Tagen dauern kann.“ Das Getränk sei gemacht für „Erwachsene, die länger anhaltenden und erfüllten Sex“ haben wollten.
Eine Tasse sorgt für Energieschub
Bereits eine Tasse sorge laut Anbieter für einen Energieschub, der die Hormone in Wallung bringt und eine natürliche Erektion auslöst. „Es ist wie ein Jungbrunnen für Sex“, meinte „Stiff- Bull“-Chef Keith Hanson. Zudem tauge das Aufguss-Getränk auch dazu, beim Sport und bei der Arbeit für neuen Schub zu sorgen.
Doch nicht alle sind mit dem Produkt zufrieden. Die amerikanische Lebens- und Arzneimittelbehörde FDA warnt vor möglichen Nebenwirkungen des Getränks, vor allem bei Männern, die Herzprobleme haben, an Diabetes, Bluthochdruck und/oder hohem Cholesterinspiegel leiden. Die FDA stuft den Kaffee in die Liste „der schlechten Produkte“ ein.
Natürliche Hilfen bei Potenzproblemen
Gesundheitsexperten zufolge leidet fast die Hälfte der Männer zwischen 40 und 70 Jahren gelegentlich an Erektionsstörungen. Bei Jüngeren entstehen die Probleme häufig infolge von Stress, Medikamenten oder Alkohol. Im höheren Alter stehen oft körperliche Faktoren im Vordergrund. Wer unter der in der Fachsprache bezeichneten erektilen Dysfunktion leidet, sollte sich einem Urologen anvertrauen.
In manchen Fällen können aber auch bestimmte Hausmittel bei Potenzstörungen helfen. So können unter anderem weniger Stress und gesunde Lebensmittel dazu beitragen, dass die „Manneskraft“ erhalten bleibt. Auch ein wenig Wein und Sport schützen vor Impotenz, wie US-amerikanische Forscher berichteten. (ad)

Neben all den positiven Effekten auf das Herz-Kreislauf-System, den Fettstoffwechsel und das allgemeine Wohlbefinden, ist in den USA nun ein Instant-Kaffee auf den Markt gekommen, der die Potenzkraft des Mannes fördern soll. Der Kaffee wird unter dem Namen „Stiff Bull“ und „The Relationship Saver“ – also „Beziehungsretter“ vertrieben.
Laut der britischen Zeitschrift Daily Mail haben den Kaffee bereits mehr als 200.000 Männer bestellt. Wir finden die Idee eines solchen Getränks äußerst interessant, weshalb wir für unsere Leser ein wenig recherchiert haben. Ist der Kaffee wirklich förderlich für die Potenz? Oder handelt es sich hierbei lediglich um ein Werbeversprechen? Mit welchen Inhaltsstoffen wird der Effekt erzielt?
Welche Inhaltsstoffe enthält der Männer-Kaffee?
Laut Hersteller enthält der neue Instant-Kaffee „Stiff Bull“ vor allem drei Substanzen, die für die potenzfördernde Wirkung verantwortlich sein sollen. Dazu gehören Tongkat Ali, die Maca-Wurzel und Guarana.
Die Inhaltsstoffe seien rein pflanzlich und würden im Dschungel Malaysias gewonnen. Den Stoffen würde eine viagra-ähnliche Wirkung innewohnen, sodass die Potenzkraft des Mannes durch den Konsum gesteigert werde.
Welche Wirkung hat der Kaffee auf Männer?
Der Hersteller verspricht vor allem drei Wirkweisen: Eine gesteigerte Libido – also ein gesteigertes sexuelles Verlangen -, eine gesteigerte Potenzkraft und eine Verbesserung des allgemeinen Wohlbefindens.
Diese Aussagen wirken auf den ersten Blick vertrauenswürdig, da bereits mehrere wissenschaftliche Studien gezeigt haben, dass die Stoffe Tongkat Ali und die Maca-Wurzel tatsächlich potenzfördernd wirken können – zumindest unter Laborbedingungen bei Ratten.
Die wichtige Frage lautet hierbei: Wird der Kaffee auch beim Menschen Wirkung zeigen, wenn er die Wirkstoffe in verdünnter Form per Kaffee zu sich nimmt?
Ist der Kaffee wirklich nur rein pflanzlich?
Rein pflanzlich scheint der Kaffee laut der US-amerikanischen „Food & Drug Administration“ (kurz: FDA) jedoch nicht zu sein. Die Behörde fand in einer Laboruntersuchung die Substanz „Desmethyl Carbodenafil„, die dem Wirkstoff von Viagra – namentlich Sildenafil – sehr ähnlich ist. Scheinbar enthält das Produkt „Stiff Bull“ also tatsächlich künstlich synthetisierte Potenzmittel.
Besonders interessant: Der Hersteller verneint diesen Fund. Wir sind uns jedoch sicher, dass dem Kaffee heimlich solche Stoffe untergejubelt werden, um bei den Konsumenten tatsächlich eine Wirkung herbeizuführen. Die Kraft von rein pflanzlichen Wirkstoffen reicht nämlich in der Regel dafür nicht aus.
Welche Nebenwirkungen können auftreten?
Aufgrund des Fundes der FDA ist der Kaffee nur mit äußerster Vorsicht zu genießen. Der Inhaltsstoff „Desmethyol Carbodenafil“ kann zu Wechselwirkungen mit anderen Medikamenten und zu einem rapiden Absinken des Blutdrucks führen. Insbesondere Menschen, die unter Bluthochdruck und sonstigen Herz-Kreislauf-Problemen leiden, sollten deshalb unbedingt auf den Konsum des Kaffees verzichten.
Auch ansonsten ist der Verzehr des Kaffees nicht empfehlenswert. Schließlich weiß man nicht, in welcher Konzentration welche Inhaltsstoffe tatsächlich enthalten sind – ein häufig auftretendes Phänomen bei gefälschten Medikamenten.
Fazit: Lieber verzichten!
Alles in allem handelt es sich bei „Stiff Bull“ um ein äußerst ominöses Produkt. In den USA können solche Produkte – zumindest zu Beginn – relativ problemlos verkauft werden, da die Gesundheitsbehörden Lebensmittel erst im Nachhinein prüfen.
In Europa werden wir wohl auf den Kaffee verzichten müssen. Auf unserem Kontinent werden Produkte nämlich immer geprüft, bevor sie überhaupt auf dem Markt erscheinen dürfen.
Nichtsdestotrotz: Aufgrund der untergejubelten Inhaltsstoffe scheint der Kaffee tatsächlich potenzfördernd zu wirken.

K affee lässt sich wunderbar als Dünger oder Haut-Peeling einsetzen, bei Kopfschmerzen verschafft er mithilfe einer Zitrone Linderung und sogar vor Karies soll er schützen.
Und seit neuestem führt er auch bei Männern zu Erektionen. So lautet jedenfalls das Werbeversprechen eines nicht unumstrittenen US-Produkts namens „Stiff Bull“. Der wasserlösliche Kaffee wird auch als „The Relationship Saver“ bezeichnet - der Beziehungsretter.
Die Nachfrage ist groß: Mehr als 200.000 Männer (laut der britischen „Daily Mail“) haben den Heißmacher innerhalb eines Monats bereits bestellt. Grund genug, um uns das einmal genauer anzuschauen.
Exotische Gewürze aus dem Dschungel Malaysias in dem Kaffeepulver sollen „Viagra-ähnliche Vorteile haben“. So jedenfalls preist es der Hersteller an.

Konkret geht es um die Inhaltsstoffe der Pflanzen Tongkat Ali, Maca-Wurzel und Guaraná. Sie sollen dafür sorgen, dass man(n) bis zu drei Tage eine Erektion hat.
Aber kann das wirklich stimmen?
Wissenschaftlich wurde die potenzsteigernde Wirkung der Pflanze Tongkat Ali und Maca-Wurzel bereits in mehreren Studien nachgewiesen. Immerhin. Die meisten davon beziehen sich allerdings auf Untersuchungen, die an Ratten durchgeführt wurden. Die pflanzlichen Stoffe sollen demnach tatsächlich die Potenz der Tiere gesteigert haben. Ob die Menge im Kaffee tatsächlich die gleiche Wirkung bei Menschen hat, das wissen bis jetzt nur die Hersteller.
Der Kaffee soll zudem die Libido und das allgemeine Wohlbefinden verbessern - das hätten auch schon die asiatischen und südamerikanischen Einwohner vor Jahrhunderten gewusst (und genutzt).
Mehr als eine Tasse dürfe es aber pro Tag nicht sein. Außerdem raten die Hersteller Menschen mit Herzproblemen oder mit Bluthochdruck davon ab, den Heißmacher zu konsumieren. Genau aus diesem Grund warnt auch die amerikanische Gesundheitsbehörde FDA vor dem Getränk.

Laut ihrer Analyse ist der Wirkstoff im Kaffee nicht so natürlich wie angepriesen. Sie haben Desmethyl Carbodenafil in dem Getränk gefunden - ein strukturell ähnlicher Stoff wie Sildenafil, der in Viagra vorkommt. Dieser Stoff kann zu Wechselwirkungen mit anderen Medikamenten führen und den Blutdruck gefährlich senken.
Dass der Stoff drin ist, davon erwähnen die Hersteller allerdings nichts. Ihre Ausrede: Das habe jemand absichtlich beigemischt.
Der Fakt, dass das Produkt einfach auf den Markt geworfen wurde, ohne es vorher dem offiziellen Check der Gesundheitsbehörden unterziehen zu lassen, deutet schon stark daraufhin, dass es sich um ein sehr fragwürdiges Produkt handelt.
Falls jemand allerdings trotzdem in die Versuchung kommt, sich das Zeug per Post zu bestellen, bedenke folgende Punkte:
I. Produkte, die als „Beziehungsretter“ auftreten, sind aller Voraussicht nach alles andere als das. Das kennen wir bereits von den Diätpillen, den Haarwuchsmitteln, den „So wirst du in einer Minute Millionär“-Webseiten und den anderen üblichen Verdächtigen.
II. Wenn du mehr Sex in deiner Beziehung wünschst, sprich doch einfach mit deiner Partnerin. Oder versuch‘s auf die ganz klassische Art: Sei nett, bring den Müll runter, spüle das Geschirr ab, koche etwas Leckeres, dimme das Licht und schau dir mit der Liebsten eine Schnulze von Liam Hemsworth oder Ryan Gosling an. Das wirkt besser als jeder Potenzkram, glaub uns da einfach.
III. Wenn ein Produkt dafür werben muss, dass es „gut schmeckt“ - oh Gott, lass bloß die Finger davon!
In Europa wird das Getränk allerdings ohnehin nicht allzu bald erhältlich sein. Hier sorgt das Vorsorgeprinzip dafür, dass der Hersteller erst beweisen muss, dass sein Produkt für den Konsumenten ungefährlich ist. Gut so.
