You can smell the perfume of coffee roasting from outside, before seeing the place. It's slightly off hand for Cologne, close to the edges, so probably not a place a tourist would willingly venture to. Yet the coffee is excellent and the price is fair. I especially like their well-made capuccino (even with soy milk). I haven't tried many of their coffee sorts, but there is a huge selection for all machines and of all kinds (I bought Espresso Napolitano). One can find their coffee in several places in the city. Go if you're a true coffee fan, or if, like me, you spent some time in Italy and miss a good cup.

I've had their coffee a bunch of times, but just went there for the first time with Oli, and i gotta say i was pretty impressed by the huge amount of sorts of coffee they have.

If you're a coffee junkie, this is the place to go.

I had a fresh brewed Nicaragua Maragogype and it was just a blessing.

I loved it in every single way.

Plus you get to see the master roaster in action roasting the coffee beans just in the middle of the shop.

The smell is wonderful and adds a lot to the already great experience.

Lucky me this place is a few blocks away from my work, so i'm going to be here a lot.

I'm a cafe fan not a coffee fan so this wasn't the greatest place for me.

Schamong Kaffee

How come didnt I manage to write a review about this bloody pretty coffee rostery?

Been here quite some times - a tiny little place.

How come didnt I manage to write a review about this bloody pretty coffee rostery?

Been here quite some times - a tiny little place which happens to be the oldest coffee rostery in town. The sellection of coffee is adorable. I even found several from javanese blends to pricey but refined mandailing treasure. Yupe, you could purchase the civet coffee here too.

Cologne Places: Schamong Kaffee

Besides the better known and more easily approachable places in the center and old town of Cologne, there are of course numerous spots all over the town that locals hold in high regards. For caffeine aficionados the place to go is definitely Schamong Kaffee in the district of Ehrenfeld. Since 1949, this family business is Cologne’s oldest coffee roaster and is as of today run in the third generation by members of the Schamong family.

Throughout the years the roastery with its over 50 year old but still perfectly running Probat roasting machine UG-15n made a name for itself even beyond city limits. Besides the actual roastery and a shop, customers can also get their favorite coffee-to-go or have a nice cup at the shop and read the paper before attending work.

Drink your coffee and read a paper

For travelers who are looking to discover Cologne beyond the usual spots, this is definitely a place to check out.

Schamong Kaffee - Artisan Coffee Roaster "Schamong" (Cologne, Germany)

I love to drink coffee. Whether I prepare it with my coffee machine, my espresso maker or my lever espresso machine. Whether I am on the road, drop by a corner coffeeshop, or while running errands. Of course, the coffee does not always taste great but I always look forward to enjoying a good cup of coffee with a great deal of anticipation. That´s just everyday life.

But there are still moments that let me pause for a little longer than usual, those moments when I have come across something special that stands out from the routine of that everyday life. My most recent such exiting "discovery" is an artisan coffee roasting company called "Schamong" in the City of Cologne, Germany. Founded in 1949, it is the oldest coffee roasting company in that city.

Other espresso roasts that you can find at Schamong include the Espresso Amalfitano (received the gold medal in 2014 from the German Coffee Roasters Guild), the Espresso Fiorentiono (received the silver medal in 2010 of the German Coffee Roasters Guild), Romano, Neapolitano and a Decaf Espresso Blend.

  • 200 grams (7 ounces) whole hazelnuts, toasted or not
  • 250 grams ( 8.8 ounces/2 cups) wheat flour, plus some for the work surface
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • a pinch of fine sea salt
  • 1 tsp ground Ceylon cinnamon
  • 140 grams (5 ounces) super fine (caster) sugar
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla sugar
  • 60 ml freshly brewed espresso, cooled (I used Schamong Espresso Coloniese) NOTE: 60 ml espresso is equal to a double espresso or espresso doppio
  • 25 grams (0.8 ounce/2 tbsp) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 egg (L), free range or organic
  • 100 grams (3.5 ounces) dark chocolate, 70% cocoa solids, chopped

  • ½ TL Backpulver
  • ½ TL Natron
  • eine Prise feines Meersalz
  • 1 TL gemahlener Ceylon-Zimt
  • 140 Gramm feinster weißer Zucker
  • 2 TL Bourbon Vanillezucker
  • 60 ml frisch gebrühter Schamong Espresso Coloniese, abgekühlt HINWEIS: 60 ml Espresso entspricht einem Espresso doppio oder doppelten Espresso
  • 25 Gramm ungesalzene Butter, Zimmertemperatur
  • 1 Ei (L), Freilandhaltung oder Bio
  • 100 Gramm dunkle Schokolade mit 70 % Kakaoanteil, gehackt

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (or use Silpat baking mat).
  2. On the baking sheet toast hazelnuts in one layer in middle of oven 10 to 15 minutes, or until lightly colored and skins are blistered. Wrap nuts in a kitchen towel and let steam for about one minute. Rub nuts in a tea towel to remove loose skins (it does not matter if not all of the skins come off) and cool completely.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla sugar until well combined.
  4. Transfer the dry ingredients to the bowl of your mixer and add the espresso, butter and egg.
  5. Then beat the wet ingredients into the flour mixture until the mixture is well combined and comes together as a dough.
  6. Add the whole hazelnuts and the chocolate and combine well.
  7. Divide the dough into two equal parts.
  8. Wrap each dough piece in plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for about thirty minutes and up to a day.
  9. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  10. Dust your work surface with the remaining flour. Take the first batch of dough out of the refrigerator and using the palms of your hands, roll the Biscotti dough into a cylinder shape on the dusted surface. Flatten the dough a little to form an oval cylinder if you wish. Repeat with the remaining dough.
  11. Transfer the dough logs to a baking sheet and bake for about 15 minutes, or until the logs have spread and doubled in size.
  12. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and set aside on a wire rack to cool a bit.
  13. When the logs have cooled but are still warm, slice each about 1cm (½ inches) thick, you should cut on the diagonal, using a very sharp knife.
  14. Place each Biscotti slice onto a baking sheet or onto cooling racks that you place onto the baking sheets thereby allowing for the hot air to circulate around each Biscotti cookie slice. Return the baking sheets to the oven for a further 10 to 15 minutes, or until crisp, golden-brown and cooked through.
  15. Transfer to cooling racks and cool completely.
  16. When the Biscotti have completely cooled, place them in cookie tins, between layers of parchment, they will keep for quite some time.

Zubereitung der Biscotti

  1. Ein Backblech mit Backpapier auslegen oder Silpat Backmatten verwenden.

WHAT a beautiful post! as a coffee addict myself I appreciated every word! the biscotti look so good!

Mary, well, as coffee lovers, we can appreciate the kind of work that is required to produce such wonderful coffees for us to enjoy - and why not bake some lovely Biscotti with a double espresso in the batter.

Wishing you and your family a very Happy Easter!

Such a lovely post, Andrea. Biscotti with chocolate and coffee sounds utterly delicious - and they look fantastic!

Cathleen, these Coffeeshop Biscotti are delicious and meant as an hommage to this outstanding artisan coffee roasting company and their incredible coffee! The dark chocolate, hazelnut and cinnamon flavors are so nice together with the espresso.

Thank you for the kind comment and have a very nice Easter!

Thank you for such a wonderful post and a great recipe for biscotti! (Thanks also for sending it early - it saved my dinner party!) It is really interesting to read about the roasting process, and I love the smell of roasting coffee. but, hier ist eine Überraschung! Ich habe nimmer Kaffee getrunken! Immer kakao! Lieberman grüße aus Tucson!

Dear David, well, especially for you, I did include the little detail in this blog post that Schamong carries wonderful decaf options. so if ever I were to bake these lovely Biscotti for you, I would use that instead of the regular espresso - I am still sure you would love the taste. How nice that my recipe for Chocolate Biscotti saved your dinner party!

Euch beiden ein Frohes Osterfest!

This was an excellent post, i must admit that I enjoyed and learned something about coffee roasting. I have yet to attempt this biscotti recipe or even the one for the lebkuchen biscotti.

HI Andrea, what an informative post, I did not realize there was so much to the roasting process. As for the biscotti, hazelnuts are my favorite nut and the photos are just lovely. After reading this I find myself thinking about going out to the kitchen for an espresso and wanting one of your biscotti to go with it. Very nice. Happy Easter to you and your family!

Cheri, there are a lot of steps involved in roasting good quality coffee - amazing isn´t it?! These Biscotti are quite nice with a freshly brewed Espresso for dunking!

Have a wonderful Easter weekend!

What an incredibly informative post. Thanks for the enlightenment. The store looks amazing. Aren't those roasting machines glorious? The shop near us has one, and I always love to be there when he fellow is roasting the coffee beans. Your biscotti sound wonderful - just the thing for an afternoon treat!

Cara Adri, I hope I am not being too preachy here but there is just so much work, love, and effort that goes into making good-quality coffee (and you know that, of course), I thought this handiwork needed a rather detailed hommage! And, yes, these roasting machines are indeed glorious!

The espresso and chocolate must give such a deep flavor to the biscotti. I love visiting a coffee store where they do their own roasting, the aroma is outstanding even for those who don't drink coffee.

Dear Karen, absolutely - the atmosphere in the artisan coffee shops is incredible - the smell, the design, the whole interior, the customers, and that incredible roasting machine that has been in service for over a century now! But my favorite thing about this place is the fact that each and every batch of roasted coffee is checked by hand by the roast master himself.

Thank you so much for stopping by!

Thank you for stopping by and welcoming me back in the blog world! My Easter was quite nice, I hope you also had a wonderful one.

This was a great post, it definitely convinced me to stop by Schamong in case I visit Köln. Plus your pictures portrait everything so beautifully.

Your biscotti look simply perfect, I love the flavours and its combination. If I were you I'ld pack them in nicely tied bags and suggest a business partnership with Schamong rightaway ;) They would be a hit at the shop, coffee with biscotti is just the perfect combo!

Hi Inês - so very nice to see you blogging again. My pleasure "to welcome you back". Hope all is well in Munich and that your studies are progressing the way you want them to. If you ever come to Köln, of course, you will go visit Schamong and bring tons of freshly roasted beans and cups with you all the way to Munich! My husband told me the same thing with respect to the Biscotti - I will bake a whole bunch of them again this week, wrap them all up nicely and bring to the very friendly staff (they were quite patient with us during that very long photo session).

What a gorgeous post, Andrea. Really enjoyed it - felt like I was there with you.

The coffee looks so yummy. I have a homemade LavAzza every morning. Will see if I can get my hands on some Schamong.

When I saw the biscotti, the only thing I could think of was, "I hope Andrea's got her recipe posted for these!"

Glad you did. Can't wait to taste them.

Hope you had a very sweet Easter with your family. Wishing you a happy Monday. xo

Colette, we did have a nice Easter, lots of sunshine, great food and all.

The Biscotti are definitely worth making to enjoy alongside an espresso macchiato (my very personal favorite), wonderful cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate or whatever strikes your fancy.

Thank you so much for stopping by! Have a good week!

So interesting Andrea! Yes, nothing beats a good cup of coffee. You're making me want to take a trip to Cologne, this place looks amazing! Of course your biscotti would be the perfect accompaniment. YUM!

Chris, you are right, absolutely nothing beats a cup of good-quality coffee. It was a wonderful post to put to together and yes, should you ever be in Cologne, now you know where to enjoy a really coffee and learn lots about the huge amount of work and dedication that goes into coffee roasting.

Dear, thank you so much for your utterly sweet comment over at my blog. I got a new job in Zürich and will therefore move in the next days that's why I'm not blogging right now. There is just not enough time :( But I'm fine :) Your biscotti look delicious!! I adore them but never tried a coffee-version! It must taste heavenly.

Dear Amy, so, you are in Zürich now - how do you like it there. hope you really enjoy your new job and that work has not completely taken over your life because I do miss your healthy blog posts! So, I am wishing you all the very best for the new job, health, and happiness in Zürich (I only visited once, a few years ago)!

Mercie vielmals für deinen lieben Kommentar! Und ganz herzliche Grüße nach Zürich!

Andrea, I can almost smell the aroma coming from the coffee. what a treat! I enjoyed all the pictures and the cookies with hazelnut is just perfect with a cup of coffee.

Have a wonderful week my dear :D

Juliana, I am glad that the pictures can portray some of the lovely atmosphere of this wonderful coffee roasting company and coffee shop! Thank you for stopping by!

Purabi, thank you very much - how nice that my blog post can convey some of the lovely atmosphere of this very special artisan coffee roaster - there was much for me to learn about roasting coffee when I put this post together.

ahhh the addictive aroma of roasted coffee beans is one thing to cherish forever. and those delectable biscottis look heavenly, thanks so much for sharing :-)

Dear Kumar, wonderful flavors and aromas indeed - it is hard to beat the smell of freshly roasted coffee beans paired with the taste of crunchy Biscotti with freshly brewed espresso, dark chocolate, and sweet hazelnuts. Thank you for your sweet comment!

Dear Andrea, What a lovely post this is.. I enjoyed reading every bit of the place, coffee roasting company and the shop and not forget the biscotti… lovely! Thanks for sharing and photography is excellent as usual :)

Kai, freshly roasted coffee and some delicious Biscotti are hard to beat and are certainly worthy of a bit of showcasing! Thank you so much for your kind comment - always nice to hear from you!

This is a great post, interesting about coffee roasting! Nothing quite beats the aroma and taste of a cup of strong coffee. I'm a coffee addict who loved living in and traveling around Germany many years ago. I esp. remember the beautiful cathedral and museums in Cologne.

Pam, thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment - wonderful to read that you enjoyed travelling around Germany and visiting the lovely City of Cologne with its impressive cathedral and its many museums - next time you visit, you will know where to get outstanding coffee as well.

Ok, first thing first, do they ship to the US? I have died and gone to heaven looking at your photos of these beautiful coffee roasters. I know the art and experience that goes into roasting coffee and also, how different roasters choose their levels of roasting, it's fascinating to me and I just adore trying out new coffees and coffee places, I wish I was in Cologne to join your for a cup!

The biscotti are the perfect companions to coffee and my particular favourites are the hazelnut ones! Yours look fantastic Andrea!! Have a wonderful weekend Andrea xx

My dear Nazneen, while I am not so sure that Schamong is able to ship some of their lovely coffee to the States, I could send some your way - if you have a minute, just leave me your address on FB or at andrea@thekitchenlioness.de. And, yes, if you lived closer by, I know that you would love this place and I know that we would certainly share more than one coffee there! Thank you so much for the kind comment!

Do take care of yourself and have a very nice weekend with your family!

I learned so much about coffee from your post, Andrea. I was imagine all the aromas while I was reading. Now I need a cup of espresso and one of those biscotti to dunk in the cup. Hope you have a great weekend.

Betsy, thank you - I am glad that you enjoyed my lttle hommage to this artisan coffee roaster - if you are an espresso lover, you will certainly like these "Coffeehouse Biscotti Scamong", cuck full of dark choclate, they taste of cinnamon, sweet roasted hazelnuts and a hint of coffee, just perfect for dunking!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend too - by the way, how are your bees doing this year?

I rarely drink coffee, but this post makes me want to get some beans, bake those gorgeous cookies and have a cup of cappuccino!

Christy, a good cappuccino and some delicious, chocolatey, chrunchy biscotti that are chock full of hazelnuts are hard to beat indeed.

I love coffee and enjoy a cup of really good coffee almost everyday. I think working at a coffee shop was my dream back then because I could smell the coffee all day (unlike some restaurants - clothes smell so bad after staying in the restaurant, you know), and I get to drink coffee and love people watching. anyway, enjoyed reading this post. Now after reading your post, I long for a good cup of coffee! It's almost midnight so I'll look forward to it tomorrow morning, thinking of you and your post. :)

Nami, what a wonderful comment - it certainly makes me a very happy camper to read that you enjoyed this post! Thank you!

wow! i love to have 2 cup of that coffee. i love coffee.

Candy, indeed, really good coffee is and always will be one of life´s great pleasures!

I actually smell this coffee all the way in Minnesota.

Thanks, dear Kim!

I love all the photos you took, Andrea - it felt like being there! I love visiting coffee roasters and that one seems like a very special one. Your recipe for biscotti is a perfect accompaniment!

Coffee from Cologne – coffee roasting houses

Coffee is by far and away Germany’s favourite beverage – we drink 149 litres of it a year! Cafés and specialist coffee chains are more popular than ever. But this passion for coffee doesn’t stop at latte macchiato, because a new trend is sweeping Germany. The third-wave coffee movement is making once-shunned filter coffee trendy again.

Nestled between the familiar big-name chains in Cologne are now independent cafés and coffee roasters that can trace the origins of their beans back to the farms from which they were harvested. Here are my five favourite coffee roasting houses in Cologne, along with recommendations on what to order once you’re there.

ERNST KAFFEERÖSTER

The Ernst Kaffeeröster coffee house is my favourite place in the Cologne Südstadt district. Everything about this café is elegance personified, from the décor and the sweet little pastries to the coffee itself, of course. This is where I tried my first ever espresso with tonic water, and that’s my recommendation. It’s the perfect drink for this summer and delicious to boot.

HEILANDT Kaffeemanufaktur

Heilandt is my first port of call for a coffee to-go or a quick pit stop on my way home. Inside, the cosy café has a distinctly retro feel. I recommend the creamy cappuccino. It’s so yummy, you’ll probably want a second one.

SCHAMONG KAFFEE

Schamong has become a genuine Cologne institution. It has been selling coffee from its premises on Venloer Strasse in the Ehrenfeld district for decades – long before coffee manufacturers were trendy. The delicious scent of roasted beans lingers in the air, and the sublime interior is genuinely retro. I recommend the espresso macchiato – strong, black and delicious.

Venloer Str. 535

THE COFFEE GANG

The Coffee Gang uses fair trade coffee beans and organic milk, and sells the best New York cheesecake in the whole city. Surrounded by hipsters and single-origin speciality coffees, this place is a dream. I recommend the flat white. Milky coffees are my all-time favourite and the flat white is pleasantly smooth and creamy with a decent shot of caffeine.

THE COFFEE GANG

VAN DYCK RÖSTEREI

Van Dyck is located in the Ehrenfeld district – Körnerstrasse to be precise – and isn’t really a café in the conventional sense. Ehrenfeld locals perch on bar stools to sip espressos and nibble at pieces of cake. It’s not what you’d call cosy, but it gives the place a charm of its own. The fair trade beans are available to buy, and Van Dyck coffee is now being offered in an increasing number of restaurants. My recommendation: an Ehrenfelder (espresso) with vanilla ice cream. It simply melts in your mouth!

Where to kick it in Ehrenfeld

Cities in Germany can appear very similar. There’s always a shopping street busy with tourists; stations are located next to the city’s most well-known structure, and, of course, every city has its hip quarter. In Cologne—a city considered by many to be the only real alternative to Berlin’s subcultures and diversity—this quarter is Ehrenfeld, and it is the best the city has to offer.

Ehrenfeld is diverse, it’s artistic, and it’s full of places you will not want to leave, even though you’ll suddenly feel old and boring. Here are the locations you cannot afford to miss.

Bunker k101

It’s all about the arts in this particular part of Cologne. This structure is exactly what the name suggests: An old bunker turned into an exhibition space, primarily hosting political pieces. Located on a site that used to house Ehrenfeld’s old synagogue, vandalized during the 1938 Kristallnacht, tolerance is a key theme at this gallery. Expect your visit to be emotional, regardless of the exhibition.

Insider’s tip: If you have any old books or toys, bring them. There is a free library next to the bunker that will appreciate it (even though there’s no one actually manning it!).

Cost: Varies according to the exhibition, but always reasonable

Opening Hours: Depends on the exhibition; check their Facebook page for updates

Edelweisspiraten-Denkmal

Ehrenfeld has a history of resistance to the Nazis, and there’s no place where this is more apparent than this memorial to one of the most famous anti-Fascist movements. The Edelweiss Pirates were a group of young people who opposed the Nazi ideas of the Hitler Youth, instead choosing to focus on music and love, like the generation of activists that would follow in the late 60s. The memorial marks a site where many of them were executed, under a bridge in Cologne’s hippest quarter.

Cologne’s Central Mosque

Ehrenfeld is a very diverse neighborhood, and one of its newest trademark structures is the Central Mosque, designed by Cologne architecture royalty Paul Böhm, who specializes in religious structures. It is huge and beautiful and feels like a declaration that everyone is welcome in this neighborhood.

Opening Hours: None. The mosque has yet to be opened to the general public (although guided tours are offered) but even from the outside, it’s still one of the most beautiful structures you’ll see in the city.

Schamong Kaffee

You’re going to struggle with this one. The pros are quite apparent: Schamong Kaffee is the oldest coffee roaster in Cologne, the coffee is amazing, and there’s hardly any better brew to grab and take home with you. There’s just one thing, though: the place has the opening hours of a government office in a Communist country. Rest assured, though, it’s worth the meticulous planning of your time.

Cost: Higher than your normal Starbucks

Opening Hours: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. on weekdays / 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday / Closed on Sunday

The waiters and waitresses at this Ehrenfeld institution are friendly and helpful, and its central location makes it a great place for sipping coffee and having a bite. The place feels like a cross between a city library and a young hipster’s apartment. It’s a great spot to stop for an hour or two, have a cappuccino, and grab one of the weekly specials on the menu—you can’t go wrong. Just know that, no matter how cool you think you are, people around you will look smarter and swaggier, so brace yourself.

Insider’s tip: Everything, and I mean everything, tastes better with Goldmund’s yogurt.

Cost: Friendly. Expect a bill of around 30 euros for two, with a main dish and a decent amount of Kölsch. Worth every euro cent.

Opening Hours: 8 a.m. – 1 a.m. on weekdays / 9 a.m. – 1:00 a.m. on weekends

Qlosterstüffje

A typical Ehrenfeld bar, in the sense that there’s nothing typical about it, Qlosterstüffje is Cologne’s most famous left-wing hotspot. Political stickers are everywhere, and you can expect the music to match the anti-corporate theme. If you’re into this sort of thing, well done, you’re home. If you’re not, you can still enjoy the great food, drinks, and decent atmosphere.

Insider’s tip: This old-timey Cologne bar has a hidden room where you can play Kegeln, which is a German version of bowling. Failing miserably takes on a whole different meaning when everyone involved is tipsy.

Cost: It’s Cologne. Beer is quite literally cheaper than water. Get used to it.

Opening Hours: 4 p.m. – midnight on weekdays, 4 p.m. – until the last customer on weekends. In Cologne, you’re lucky if that’s 7 a.m.

Underground

Clubbing is Ehrenfeld’s thing, and the Underground is top of the list. This interesting mixture between a club and a beer garden caters to diverse musical tastes, particularly where rock and hip-hop are concerned. Drinks are cheap here, and entrance is free of charge. Dance, chat, and have a couple of drinks in the beer garden.

Insider’s tip: You’re going to enjoy it if your secret, guilty pleasure is 2000’s nu metal. (Everyone’s secret, guilty pleasure is 2000s nu metal, so we’re good.)

Cost: Free entrance, friendly alcohol prices, decent selection of beers—which doesn’t mean all that much as you’ll end up having Kölsch anyway.

Opening Hours: Thursday to Saturday from 8 p.m. until the early morning (at least)

Braustelle

This city is all about beer, and this Ehrenfeld brewery—Cologne’s smallest—is a gem. The atmosphere is easygoing, the beers are small and cheap, and it’s usually full with revelers who are there for the same reason as you: to drink and laugh.

Insider’s tip: Walking down the street with a bottle of beer is completely legal in Germany, and it’s celebrated by this wonderful term called Wegbier (literally: beer to go). Carrying a Braustelle-brewed beer while taking to the streets will earn you cool points in Ehrenfeld.

Cost: Highly affordable, highly fun

The only real punk club and bar in and around Cologne calls Ehrenfeld home. One of many subcultures celebrated throughout the quarter, punk and indie have a special place reserved in the hearts of the locals. Local indie bands play Sonic Ballroom every weekend, and those gigs are followed by a punk rock party with one of the most diverse mixes of cool people that Cologne has to offer (and boy does it have a lot of those).

Insider’s tip: The Ballroom also hosts the occasional flea market on Sundays. Add some beer to the equation, and if that doesn’t sound appealing to you, you’re probably not fun at parties.

Opening Hours: Vary—usually Thursday-Sunday from 8 p.m.

A quarter full of clubs, Ehrenfeld is naturally home to a significant number of takeaway spots as well. After a night out, all you want is to grab something that will prevent hangovers and keep sorrow at bay. Libanon will do just that. This Arab-styled eatery has everything you can ask for when in post-partying mode, including falafel, hummus, and shawarma. I strongly recommend the falafel plate.

Insider’s tip: Ask for extra hummus. And if it’s not too busy, have a friendly word with the people running the place. There’s every chance in the world you’ll get rewarded for it in the shape of food.

Cost: There’s a suspicious miscorrelation between how good the food is and the prices—Inexpensive

Opening Hours: When in dire need of carbs

Shamong Township is proud to announce the refurbished ambulance has arrived for Indian Mills Volunteer EMS Squad. The IMVFC and Shamong Township Committee worked together to secure a lower cost alternative to purchasing a brand new ambulance. Instead of spending over $220K for a new ambulance, the Township & IMVFC were able to secure a new truck chasis and mount a refurbished, used ambulance box for $105K saving the taxpayers over 50% of costs. This innovative thinking will provide the tools to serve our community for many years to come at a fraction of the original projected costs!

Ehrenfeld

Once a workers’ district, the Ehrenfeld neighbourhood in Köln is luring a multi-cultural mix of families and creatives with its competitive housing prices and well- preserved architecture.

Just 20 years ago, Ehrenfeld in northwestern Köln was still considered a drab workers’ suburb. Today, it’s a flourishing residential and start-up hub attracting young families and creatives with its charming yet convenient mixture of modernity and tradition. Whether you take a stroll on the central Venloer Strasse with its jolly jumble of Turkish kebab takeaways and pubs serving the city’s pride and glory Kölsch brew, or lose yourself in the thriving Körnerstrasse with heaps of trendy shops and cafés, Ehrenfed has an undeniable sense of community…

Five cool tips for Ehrenfeld

I was thrilled to hear that Kleiderei has been in Cologne since May 2015, having already been a frequent visitor to this “clothes library” back in Hamburg, where it used to be. “Kleiderei” is a treasure trove of clothing, from casual, everyday outfits to distinctive designs and crazy creations. The library manager is Lena. She’s been living in Cologne for 11 years, studied fashion design and now has her own label, “Trinkhallen-Schickeria”. She’s also delighted to be running Kleiderei – a fashion store that just couldn’t be more sustainable.

There was another reason for me to be happy too – Kleiderei is in my favourite district of Cologne, Ehrenfeld. I lived there for a good two years myself and am still completely in love with the place. It’s totally hip and multicultural and “bored” is a concept that just doesn’t happen here. Lena agrees with me so she was glad of this chance to introduce you to her favourite places in Ehrenfeld.

It’s no surprise that Kleiderei itself is one of Lena‘s favourite places in Ehrenfeld. The idea behind the concept is that you can borrow garments until you’ve had enough of them and want to try something else. If, however, you develop an intimate relationship with a particular piece of clothing and don’t want to let go, you simply buy it. They all have prices marked on them. So it’s sort of a library with a shop built in. And Lena oversees around 1,500 individual garments, most of them second hand or vintage, but some from her own collection and from those of other young designers. All you have to do is become a member and then you can start borrowing to your heart’s content. Just like in a normal library.

Madame Tartine

At Madame Tartine you can feast à la française – right in the middle of Ehrenfeld. There’s breakfast or lunch or simply just pop in for a café au lait. Lena comes here a lot and is a great fan of the cheese. The speciality here, however, is tartine – a slice of bread with a yummy topping. It might sound a little mundane at first but it can actually be quite exquisite. For example, how does tartine with dried tomatoes, rocket leaves, ham and sesame seeds sound?

Café Fridolin

If cosy living rooms are your thing, Café Fridolin is the place for you. It’s almost like being at your gran’s house in the 60s or 70s – only the coffee is better! The café is full of attention to detail, be it in the local designers’ works adorning the shelves or in the meals, cakes and drinks on offer. Another plus factor is that they’re clued up on food intolerances so even the gluten or lactose intolerant don’t have to go hungry (or thirsty!). Once you’ve settled into one of the comfy armchairs, you won’t want to leave.

Ich, Du & Es

Of course, you can’t spend all day sitting around eating cake or cheese and drinking coffee. So how about popping in to “Ich, Du & Es”? This exhibition/work/sales space, at Alpenerstr. 21, is the brainchild of designers Inga Kraayvanger and Sybille Lehnen. They make jewellery and accessories with a modern, uncluttered look and everything is produced under fair working conditions. Customers can also order the gorgeous items in the online shop.

Schamong Kaffee

Schamong has a history spanning 50 years, making it Cologne’s oldest coffee roasting house. The shop sells a diverse range of blends – classic coffees alongside special interpretations of the coffee bean. But Schamong is also a café, which means you can stay and enjoy one of the delicious compositions in house. Plus, if you want to learn how to make excellent coffee, Schamong – home to Cologne’s first coffee academy – can help.
