My Top Hamburg Restaurants
We just returned from our whirlwind trip to Hamburg, Germany this week and what a fun trip it was! We were only there for two full days and one evening on our arrival day, but we definitely made the most of our time there! Since we spontaneously booked our flights as a blind booking with Eurowings only a few days beforehand, we didn’t have much time to plan our trip. We did, however, research some top restaurants in Hamburg to make sure we had some good meals to look forward to on our trip! Our research sure paid off – we had some delicious meals in Germany’s harbour city.
I’ve put together a list of recommended restaurants that we visited – there are only a few since we didn’t have much time in the city. After the name of each spot, I’ve included the address. At the end of this post, I share a map I created including these recommended spots as well as some other well-reviewed places that we didn’t get a chance to try. Hopefully this will be a helpful culinary guide for you as you prepare for your trip to Hamburg!
Ernst-Merck-Str. 10, Hamburg
We arrived in Hamburg shortly after Lunar New Year and I was desperate to satisfy my dim sum craving. Having been unsuccessful at finding dim sum in Stuttgart, I had high hopes of locating it in Hamburg due to the city’s greater variety of Chinese restaurants and reputation as a seafood haven. All online recommendations pointed toward Herr He, a recently opened Chinese restaurant just north of the Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (main train station). The exterior of the restaurant is unassuming and the interior is simply but modernly decorated. We went for a dim sum lunch on a Tuesday afternoon and were surprised to have the restaurant pretty much all to ourselves. They had a wide variety of dim sum dishes to choose from, as well as larger dishes of rice, meat, noodles, etc. Meal highlights included the prawn dumplings, the sweet and sour pork, and the sesame balls filled with lotus paste. The servers were friendly and accommodating, always a plus!
Deichstrasse 39, Hamburg
I came across the recommendation to visit the c rêperie Ti Breizh from my friends E & P who blog at The Slow Pace. After reading their rave reviews of the restaurant and seeing the photos of their mouth-watering c rêpes, I knew I had to visit!
Ti Breizh crêperie
The restaurant has a lovely white-washed interior evoking the atmosphere of the Brittany seaside. The servers are all dressed in nautical stripes and speak both French and German. There is even a small shop within the restaurant called La Boutique de la Mer where you can purchase your own colourful stripy sweater and seaside accessories.
Ti Breizh is extremely popular so we made a reservation in advance. However, we were so looking forward to going there that we dropped into the restaurant the day before our reservation to see if we could manage to snag a table for dinner that evening. We were in luck and were able to be seated at a small corner table.
The menu features all types of sweet and savoury c rêpes and galettes, both with regular flour and with buckwheat. S and I opted to share one savoury galette with smoked salmon, crème fraîche, lemon and salad (the Nordique) for our main course. For dessert, I ordered the sweet c rêpe with salted caramel sauce (c aramel breton maison) and S ordered the sweet c rêpe with caramelized apples and vanilla ice cream (Tatin). Words cannot descried how amazing all our c rêpes were! My eyes pretty much rolled into the back of my head as I bit into my sweet c rêpe. I’m still thinking about that caramel sauce. Run, don’t walk, to Ti Breizh!
Caf é Paris
Rathausstraße 4, Hamburg
Interior of Café Paris
On our last day in Hamburg, we decided to go out for a late-morning brunch that would keep us filled until dinnertime. With the charm and glamour of French and Czech caf és fresh in my mind from our recent trips to Paris and Prague, I was happy to learn of a lovely old caf é just off of the Rathausplatz in the town centre. Caf é Paris has been open since 1882 and specializes in traditional French fare, light lunches and breakfasts. Despite my desire to order the massive, 3-tiered ‘large breakfast for two’ after spotting it on a few diners’ tables, I talked myself out of it and ordered the ‘small breakfast’ consisting of cheese, cold cuts, honey, jam, a boiled egg, fresh fruit, a croissant, a roll, and a hot beverage. S ordered the ‘French breakfast’, including a half baguette, a croissant, jam, Nutella, fresh fruit, and a hot beverage.

The servers were quick and efficient, promptly taking our order and bringing out our plates only minutes later. The cafés au lait we ordered came out in large bowls which warmed up our hands on the chilly February morning. The croissants were flaky and tender and the strawberry and cherry jams were homemade and packed with flavour. The gorgeous restaurant is bustling with servers and diners and is a lovely spot to enjoy a bit of French flair in Hamburg.

Cute Place and Friendly Staff - Edit
I visited Kaffee Stark last week and I loved it. It had good vibes and staff was really friendly, something I rarely came across during my visit to Hamburg. I had a good breakfast of scrambled eggs, might not be purely vegetarian yet, they do have vegan options and the atmosphere itself was warm, with seating indoor and outdoor. It's a quite place and exactly what I was looking for. Though the only downside in the whole experience is that I was obviously a foreigner, not too familiar with the currency and struggled a bit to put the right amount, only later to discover that I overpaid. I would expect the people at the counter to notify me of the mistake.
Pros: Friendly staff, Quiet, Seating options indoors/outdoors
Cons: Not very attentive to my currency confusion

Beautiful, cosy and tasty - Edit
Not many vegan options, but worth a visit! The vegan breakfast consists of bread, rolls, multiple spreads, tofu and salad. They always have one vegan soup, usually some kind of chili sin carne. Both the breakfast and soup are amazing! Not the cheapest breakfast, though.
One of the nicest placest to sit and chill.
Pros: excellent food, comfy chairs
Cons: few vegan food options

Travel Tips: Hamburg
This is the second post in my new Travel Tips series where I provide travel tips for specific destinations, whether they be cities, regions or countries. My Travel Tips guides aim to give you some of my best tips for exploring a new place and hopefully help you to save a bit of money, maximize your sightseeing time and find the most convenient ways to get around. You can find posts in this series under Destinations – Travel Tips in the menu bar. Today I’m featuring beautiful Hamburg, Germany!
Travel Tips: Hamburg
Food & Drink
The Hamburg Franzbrötchen.
- Hamburg has a great variety of cuisine due to its history as an international harbour city. Since it’s situated right on the river Elbe, fish and seafood are abundant. A local specialty is Pannfisch, a fish dish featuring fried potatoes and a mustard sauce.
- A must-try baked good is the Franzbrötchen, a small, sweet butter and cinnamon pastry found in every Hamburg bakery. Makes a great to-go breakfast or coffee break snack.
- I only had a chance to visit a few restaurants in Hamburg, but I list my top recommendations in my Hamburg restaurant guide.
Transportation
- The Hamburg Public Transport Network (HVV) is very easy to navigate and includes S-Bahn trains, U-Bahn trains, some longer distance trains, buses, and ferries.
- Rather than buying single tickets, consider buying the 9am day ticket even if you’re only planning to travel twice in one day since it’s more economical. Up to five people can travel on a 9am group ticket for a favourable flat rate, making it a great deal for pairs or small groups of travellers.
- If you have a smartphone, the free HVV app is very handy for looking up transit schedules, travel routes, and ticket info.
- If you plan to do a lot of travelling and sightseeing within Hamburg, you may want to consider buying the Hamburg Card. The card can be purchased for a single person or group of up to five people for anywhere from 1 to 5 days. It offers several discounts to museums, restaurants, theaters, harbour cruises, city tours, musicals and more. We didn’t end up buying the Hamburg Group Card during our visit, but after looking back on the activities and amount of travel we did, it might have been slighter cheaper for us to get one rather than buying daily group transit tickets and admissions to certain sights.

- Hamburg is actually the third largest musical city in the world after New York City and London. Musicals alone attract upwards of 2 million visitors to the city annually. There are several shows to choose from, such as the ever popular The Lion King ( Der König der Löwen), Rocky, Aladdin or DasWunder von Bern. Note that the musicals are performed in German (so Be Prepared or Seid Bereit!)
- If you plan to visit Hamburg mainly to see a musical, you might want to check out some of the musical package deals available that combine musical tickets with a hotel stay.
- Musicals that take place at the Stage Theater im Hafen and the Stage Theater an der Elbe require you to board a small ferry at Landungsbrücken that will take you across the river to the theater. Ferries run regularly leading up to performance time and take you back to the mainland after the show. Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to get to the theater!
My Top Activity Recommendations
- Check out my top sightseeing spots in Hamburg for ideas of what to see in the harbour city.
- Try a walking tour to see the key city sights in a short period of time. I really enjoyed our 2 hour free tour with Sandemans New Europe. The tour covered the Rathaus, St. Petri, HafenCity, Speicherstadt, St Nikolai Church, and much more.
- If the weather is good, go for a stroll through one of Hamburg’s many parks or take a ferry boat ride. The number 62 ferry included in the HVV transportation network visits many spots that more expensive sightseeing ferry boats visit, so you can save some money and see the best of Hamburg from the water.

Produktentdeckung: Vietnamesischer Kaffee
Onkel Mattel??
