Rüdesheimer Kaffee

5 comments:

That waiter was so funny! I really enjoyed him.

Hi! Our family loves Rudesheimer Kaffee. I recently borrowed my mother-in-laws set to share with friends. I would love to have my own set, but they are difficult to find.

I would like to order the set if you are willing to ship to Newberg

I am so sorry I unfortunately do not live in Germany any longer. I would have mailed you one if I did.

Brewing Bad: the Breaking Bad Coffee Maker

The day has finally come—Breaking Bad is back. After a year of suspense, everybody’s favorite meth-cooking high school chemistry teacher is back.

In order to get up to speed with the premiere of season 5’s second half, I’ve been watching my Breaking Bad DVDs lately. I was watching episode 603—”Sunset”—in which Gale Boetticher, being first introduced to Walter White, unveils his coffee-making apparatus (which is, of course, adjacent to the meth lab they work in):

If you didn’t recognize it, Gale essentially built, for all intents and purposes, a siphon filter. There’s a more specific name for it than the one Gale came up with, though—the Florence Siphon. Of course, being an incredibly geeky chemist, there shouldn’t be any doubt that Gale would go above and beyond what is absolutely necessary to make a great cup of coffee, but he didn’t need that entire set up—he could’ve bought a siphon filter online, after all.

That, though, would have been much less entertaining for us viewers.

I recently ran across this a blog called Weak Interactions, where the blogger explains science the way it is portrayed on screen—sort of like a “myth busters” type of thing I guess. He investigates whether or not Hollywood science is the equivalent of real-life science. I found this entry about the “Sunset” episode of Breaking Bad and the Breaking Bad coffee maker and thought it was really interesting:

Gale’s perfect coffee equipment looks to be a fairly overcomplicated vacuum reflux/distillation set-up, which is not currently under vacuum (there is no pump running, and a reflux condenser is not sealed into its flask). His quinic acid theory, however, is sound – it is known to contribute to the bitterness/acidity of coffee, but there are many other contributing factors.

Boiling a chemical under a mild vacuum is a common method of distilling or refluxing without strong heating, especially for things like water that have a relatively high boiling point. For the water to boil at 92 °C, the pressure would have to be about 0.75 bar (normal atmospheric pressure is 1 bar), which is roughly equivalent to an elevation of 2440 m, which can be experienced at the summit of El Capitan.

While I find it hard to believe that a cup of Sumatra, in 2010 or ’11, was the best cup of coffee Walter White had ever had (then again, maybe it was; I guess it depends what he drank before), I love this scene. And it’s not just because I love this show, and I love the music in this scene, and I love David Costabile (I even liked him when he was doing those cell phone commercials) and Bryan Cranston as actors; but also because of how well it promoted the specialty coffee industry.

In one fell swoop, Vince Gilligan and the writers of Breaking Bad did more positive promotion for the specialty coffee industry than baristas often do!

And I don’t mean it’s just because Breaking Bad has an insanely large viewing audience, but watch the way Gale interacts with Walt in this scene: he’s very humble and gentle and takes his time explaining the process, explaining how to taste the coffee, explaining how this process positively affects the coffee in the cup, even tagging on the importance of proper grinding!

It’s absolutely incredible how much like a barista Gale acts in this scene.

And, of course, Walter White, who is clearly the more intelligent and talented chemist of the two, instantly becomes a believer. Throughout the rest of season three and into season four, in fact, Walter only drinks coffee that he makes with the siphon filter. It’s a shame that there’s no deleted scene of Walt going home and destroying his drip brewer or Keurig K-Cup machine…

It’s a beautiful scene that every barista should take note of while watching.

He did cannabalize a Norelco Dial-a-Brew to make a cutter when he needs to cut his way out of zip tie cuffs later on, though, so that’s close 😉

excellent series! but two mistakes in this scene : Gale opens the tap to pour coffee with his right hand (0:35min). As it is set up, a proper chemist would use his left hand to open the tap and his right hand to hold the mug.

second mistake : As you explain it well, the is vacuum in the system, so Gale should open a vent before pouring the coffee!

Great series, though!

I’m a proper chemist. I usually open taps with my right hand, holding any container with my left, I get more control that way. Oh, and no, there would be no need to open a went before pouring the coffee, even with a stronger vacuum, the coffee would still flow out. Though, didn’t see that much bubbles. But it works like a charm, I myself has never tasted a better cup of coffee than my own, though my setup is way more advanced, just because. )

Extremely interested in building my own for home use. Would you be willing to send me a copy of your parts list and discuss differences in your more advanced setup? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I’m really interested in that too, if you get it, please forward to me. Or if any body else has an idea for it, it would be great.

This post is just perfect! As I’m a big fan of Breaking bad but also of coffee, I really enjoyed this scene ^^ It would be great to have an equipment like that in our houses haha 🙂

why doesnt someone make a commercial version of the coffee maker – i want one!

Great scene, I love it for all the reasons you stated. Plus, that’s my Florence Siphon project from Make: in your link, thanks! -John

Not sure why you need to boil water at 92C. Boil it normally, then cool it down to 92C and then run it through the coffee.

not an energy-efficient process. That’s why in industrial evaporators they lower the pressure up to 0.3 barg. And it’s pretty convincing that a character like Gale, so precise and quirky, couldn’t stand a coffe brewing process that wasted energy.

Bellato Union

The Bells Union (sometimes referred to as Midgets) is the government of one of three playable races in RF Online. They are the most balanced of the races in terms of power, combining their Force control and technological progress to achieve their ends, as oposed to the deity worshiping Corites or machine driven Accretians.

Overview Edit

Due to the intense gravity on their home planet, the Bellato are the smallest people in terms of frame. They are a race of inventors that are able to combine creative tools and weapons with the Light (or Holy) form of universal Force (the Cora possessing the Dark form of it). As such, Bellateans possess an equilibrium between their technology and their inherited force control. The Bellato enter the war as the least physically capable of the three races, and yet, given their ingenuity they have the potential to become the strongest, through brainpower and creation alone. Before they became the Bellato Union, however, they were the Bellato Empire, who seized control after the Cora civil war, but were bested by the Accretians. Under such pressure, they fell from power, yet they have bided their time until they became a force to be reckoned with once again, now on the battlefront of the Novus Colonization.

History Edit

Mechanized equipment was initially produced for use in scientific progression, and was mostly used on construction sites in the past, being military purposes left behind or relatively undeveloped. As the technology progressed, more diverse types of mechanized equipment were mass-produced, and as the armor unit became more established, it was placed into live battle zones for field testing. The early battles featuring the armoured units saw some impressive victories for the federation. This led to the national defense expenditure increasing, with the Bellatean army gearing towards producing more of the armor units. However, in the course of the Novus War, the armor units' previous criminal records, coupled with a series of defeats in battle to the Accretian launcher units, saw the reputation of the unit's effectiveness within the army weakened. These defeats were largely to blame on the units' design, which was not efficient on the geographical structure of Novus. After the manufacturing rights were handed over to civilian contractors, more accustomed to the planet, the armor units were redesigned to eliminate previous design flaws and for better compatibility with the Novus warzones. As the reliability of the armor units dropped due to the huge operational costs involved, the federations' peace committee decided to close down the armor unit assembly. The armored units can be divided into two types: the MAUs, constructed as a field unit to assist foot troops and assume the role of battle engine, and the other as a siege warfare unit. The siege unit was very complicated to produce and required vast amounts of resources, more than the federation could really sustain. The MAU, in contrast, was better suited for mass production, and for this reason they are much more made available to the troops. The committee then became unsure as to how to dispose of the units, so they decided that the civilians could purchase and trade the units at a relatively low price. However, due to the MAUs' firepower, a law was passed stating that MAU usage would be restricted to military purposes, banning it from civilian market.

Society Edit

Bellato society is based on technological progress and commercial development, and as such the people are shaped to that end. Bellateans learned early on that the fastest way to develop technology and profit is for people to be happy. A happy person is a productive person. This is why they have more freedom of expression and a sense of individualism than their rivals. They have long understood that freedom drives minds to think better, rather than oppression. This grants Bellato citizens many of the freedoms and liberties that are usually denied to other races. However, most, if not all of the dominant Bellateans are members of Houses. Houses are congregations of individuals who share the same blood (family ties being taken very seriously by Bellateans) and/or interests (wealth and power being also taken quite seriously by Bellateans). Success breeds success, and while Bellateans promote individual achievement, over the years the same families harvest most of the wealth and power. Influential Bellateans lend money, offer services or help to lesser ones, in exchange for business or other services, and strong ties develop between the two sides, both on a personal and commercial level. Soon enough, a vast network of interests emerges and thus a House is created. Several networks can intertwine, of course, but the core of every one of them is a powerful and identifiable family that will do it's best to keep the relatives, allies, and clients in line with the House’s interests.

Brilliant balance of flavours Thali set @ "Ananda Bhavan Restaurant" 😎

We have visited this place like 5 times (based on our recollection of different drinks we had there 😆). Indian cuisine is one of most creative cuisines that has a clever way of balancing the flavours. No wonder we find ourselves coming back here again & again! 😚

Thali set here sums it all. Thali is basically a platter of various dishes perfect for sharing with friends. Swipe right to check out component of the set $11.30 (p.s. Rava Thosai $3.90 is also in the shot). The last pic is "Gulab Jamun" a snack ball that comes in Thali set we will never forget!! ☄️
