Gourmet Chocolates with Tropical Flair

When we chose to expand from coffee into other gourmet products, chocolate was an obvious choice. Delicious treats with tropical flavor were a natural way to highlight our culture and delight our customers.

So what makes Britt’s chocolate so delicious? The answer lies in the emphasis we place on the word “gourmet.” Gourmet isn’t just a word to us; it’s the foundation we built our reputation upon. We believe that gourmet products are high quality, created from natural ingredients, and made with care.

Costa Rican Coffee:

The real secret to Pura Vida

In Costa Rica, coffee is more than just a drink, it’s a way of life. Coffee farming is an important part of our culture and something we take great pride in. Coffee embodies the Costa Rican tradition of valuing excellence and hard work while striving to fully embrace the present moment. Of the two most common types of coffee beans, Arabica and Robusta, Arabica beans are more temperamental and harder to roast. They are also considered the premier coffee source in the world, and the bean of choice for coffee lovers everywhere. Costa Rican coffee standards are so high, in fact, that it is actually illegal to roast anything other than Arabica beans in the country.

Arabica beans thrive in high altitudes and damp tropical climates—both of which Costa Rica has in abundance. Volcanic eruptions have enriched Costa Rica’s soil, providing the coffee plants nutrients and a climate that ensure their high quality taste. The wide availability of foliage, allows the beans to grow under the cover of shade. This in turn allows the beans to mature at a slower pace, giving them the time to soak up all the nutrients and flavors of the soil and develop far more complex tastes than the typical coffee bean. Café Britt takes full advantage of this diverse geography, resourcing beans from various regions throughout Costa Rica.

We take great pride in sourcing beans grown in the highly coveted Tarrazu region. Tarrazu is known worldwide for the exotically flavored Ararabica beans it produces. Its hidden valleys and high mountains create the ideal climate for growing coffee beans. Our relationship with the Tarrazu farmers spans decades, and our commitment to fairly compensating these farmers for their work ensures that we receive the best beans the region has to offer. Britt’s expert roasters then use a special method to draw the caramelized sugar produced in Tarrazu beans, to the top and give the coffee a distinguished acidic and chocolate flavor.

We also source beans from the Brunga region, well known for the scientific wonders of its greenery and the beautiful foliage is features, as well as the Central Valley.

Coffee grown in Costa Rica’s Central Valley must endure rough and unpredictable weather resulting in harder beans and delicious. National Geographic magazine went so far as to dub central Costa Rica as the premier location for brewing Arabica beans in the entire world. Our Poas Volcanic Earth blend highlights the strong, earthy flavors delivered by this region. Café Britt was one of the first coffee companies to recognize the value of organic coffees and led the movement in the coffee industry to make organic brewing the norm. We even assist some of our coffee plantations in their quest to become certified by the USDA.

Our commitment to fair trade and sustainable business practices is what makes Café Britt thrive. We adhere to strict working condition standards and compensate our workers fairly. This ethical practice has the added benefit of allowing us to develop personal relationships with our growers and receive the best coffee beans in return.

It all comes back to the coffee traditions we have been practicing for decades. We take growing coffee seriously because we know that it represents much more than a liquid beverage, coffee is the best way to enjoy life’s most precious moments—both big and small. Our cultural passion for this delightful beverage has helped Costa Rica to become one of the foremost coffee growing countries in the world.

Costa Rica Organic La Amistad

Home / Coffee Bios / Costa Rica Organic La Amistad

This coffee type originates from a small farm called La Amistad. The La Amistad farm is located above 1200 meters near the border between Costa Rica and Panama, in the Talamanca Mountain Range on the border of La Amistad International Park. The farm has been family-run for generations and the family has kept much of the 20,000+ acres as natural forest/conservation area. The estate is also one of the largest private nature reserves in Central America. La Amistad is home to hundreds of wildlife species that inhabit the surrounding rainforest.

The farm is mainly self-sufficient. The fresh and clean streams from the rain forest supply the water for washing the coffee as well as generating power to run the milling machinery on site. The plants and earthworms break down the waste from the animals, cherry pulp, ashes, and leaves to create a rich and organic fertilizer. The word Amistad translates to friendship; La Amistad farm is appropriately named as it is truly a friend to biodiversity.

  • Organic Coffee means that the coffee shrubs are grown without chemical pesticides, using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment.

InterAmerican Coffee

Costa Rica Tarrazú Amapola

Coffee came to Costa Rica in the last decade of the eighteenth century. Over the many years, coffee expanded over the highlands of the Central Valley. The development and trading of coffee deeply influenced the cultural and socioeconomic landscape of the country. Myriad coffee plant varieties, rich soils, high altitudes, and unique growing regions contribute to a popular and sought-after coffee cup profile. The interplay of these factors has allowed the country to achieve the reputation of producing some of the best coffee in Central America.

Tarrazú is a major coffee growing region in Costa Rica with a strong and well-known coffee culture. It is located south of the Central Valley. The word Tarrazú derives from the ancient Huetar Indian tribe that once inhabited this region. Amapola grows on the steep slopes in the sub regions of Los Frailes and Bustamante. Uninterrupted water flow provided by rivers feeding into the Pacific Ocean contributes to this excellent coffee. People involved in the growing and milling process are committed to protecting the environment and preserving the rivers and scenic valleys.

Cupping Notes

sharp acidity, hazelnut, nutmeg, smooth body, clean, buttery, caramel, refined flavor, well-balanced.

Monteverde Coffee Tour

The Café Monteverde Coffee Tour furnishes visitors with cultural, historical and gastronomical appreciations for the so-called “grano de oro,” or golden grain, of Costa Rica.

The Café Monteverde Coffee Tour

This interactive tour follows the development of coffee – from the crop to the cup – in a fashion that is both fun and educational. Depending on the level of interest, participants can choose between a 2-hour or 4-hour tour. The Cooperative of Santa Elena manages Café Monteverde, and all proceeds go towards supporting the local farmers and families involved in the production of the coffee.

About the Tour

The tour begins with a brief explanation of the region’s history, a story that involves the evolution from a rugged frontier land into an expansive community of settlers, farmers, scientists, conservationists, and yes, coffee producers.

The tour then descends some 500 feet down “La Trocha” – a steep road with sweeping views of the Gulf of Nicoya – into the San Luis Valley, where the crops of coffee are grown. A local farmer will speak with the tour group and explain the harvesting process and how the fruit is graded for quality. Participants can pick and taste the ripe coffee berries, a shade-grown Arabica variety of bean. The tour will then continue on through some of the cooperative’s other sustainable crops, including bananas, plantains, oranges and limes.

The processing mill, or beneficio, is the next stop. Here, the seed is separated from the fruit and dried in the sun. Once fully dried, the beans are then roasted and exported.

Finally, the tour ends at the coffee shop, where participants are invited to taste a variety of roasts and if so inclined, purchase a pound or two of fresh coffee.

Those that choose to take the 4-hour tour will additionally visit the fertilizer and paper making plants, and learn about the sustainable relationship between these two products.

About the Coffee & Community

The Cooperativa de Santa Elena, in association with the San Luis Development Organization, has helped spawn a community-wide sustainable development initiative. The water from the processing plant is recycled in the community, organic waste and coffee pulp is used to produce organic fertilizers, and plant fibers and bean shells are sent to a local paper-making collective.

The Cooperative is composed of nearly 500 members and offers a variety of services to the local residents, researchers and tourists. What’s more, Café Monteverde coffee is certified fair trade.

Related Activities: If you love coffee tours, you may also enjoy chocolate tours.

Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale. Try not to pass out from the exquisite aromas roasting, grinding and brewing all around you. (Swooning is permitted.) Welcome to a Costa Rican coffee tour, where swirling scents and café culture are enough to send any java lover into a tizzy. A caffeine-fueled, oh-so-delicious tizzy.

Coffee has a long history in Costa Rica. Its story reaches back to colonial times, when coffee surged past tobacco and cacao (chocolate) to become the nation’s #1 export. The “golden bean” (grano de oro) was incredibly important to the local economy, and the coffee industry help fund modernization and cultural establishments, including the spectacular National Theater in San Jose. Today, coffee remains one of Costa Rica’s top exports – and retains a firm foothold in local culture. Cafés decorate the capital and popular towns around the country, and most Costa Ricans enjoy an afternoon cafecito – a cup of local coffee accompanied by fresh-baked pastries.

Cafés are your standing invitation to dip your toes into Costa Rica’s coffee culture, but if you’d prefer to jump in, head-first, a coffee farm visit is the way to go. Tours are available anywhere in the country’s coffee-growing region, which is focused in the Central Valley, Monteverde, and the cool mountains south of San José (San Gerardo de Dota, Tarrazu, etc.)

All coffee tours offer their own appeal, but most introduce you to the bean’s journey from field to cup. Check out tiny coffee plants, pick a few coffee cherries (in season), and then follow the golden bean on its transformation through drying, peeling, and roasting. Of course, they’ve saved the best for last: finish your tour with a coffee tasting! You’ll have a chance to sample all the brews, like French roast and espresso, so you can choose your favorites to take home.

Visit Coffee Farm in…

San Jose & the Central Valley

Costa Rica’s most famous coffee tours are located in the Central Valley, including Heredia’s Café Britt and Alajuela’s Doka Estate. Café Britt dishes up a theatrical (and humorous) approach to the coffee tour, so your guides wear traditional coffee dress and make jokes along the way. Keep in mind that the Britt coffee tour is not held on a working coffee farm, so head elsewhere if you’re in search of an authentic experience. Doka Estate, located on the slopes of Poás Volcano, is an excellent choice – a century-old working farm and traditional water mill that are classified as a national historical and architectural heritage site. Espiritu Santo in Naranjo is a little farther off the beaten path, but this coffee town is known for some of the smoothest and most robust coffee in the nation.

Best Time to Visit: The coffee harvest runs November-March in the Central Valley, giving you the chance to sample fresh beans and try your hand at picking. But picking is only one part of the tour – you’ll love a coffee farm visit no matter the season.

Monteverde

Monteverde’s rich soils and cool temperatures create ideal conditions for coffee farming. There are a few tours in the region, and the best offer front-row seats to working coffee cooperatives. You’ll not only follow the coffee’s journey from seed to cup, but will also gain insight into the inner workings of small, farmer-run cooperatives. Cooperatives are incredibly important to the local economy, pooling resources and knowledge – not to mention encouraging recycling and environmental initiatives – to help micro farmers find success on the international coffee market. The tour’s visit to a working coffee mill is another highlight to this foodie adventure.

Best Time to Visit: December-February marks the Monteverde coffee harvest, so this is a great time to visit if you want to help pluck red, ripe coffee cherries from the bush. However, coffee tours are excellent year-round, regardless of the season.

Southern Zone Highlands

The Southern Zone Highlands is a region famed for its coffee production. Many coffee connoisseurs have heard of Tarrazu coffee and the exotic gesha varietal (you know – that coffee that sells for $70-$150 per pound?!) – and this is your chance to try them firsthand. Coopedota, located in Santa María de Dota, offers the quintessential experience, with a tour to a coffee plantation, the wet mill, roasting plant, and other points of interest. Other, smaller coffee tours are sprinkled throughout the region.

Best Time to Visit: November through March are the prime months for coffee harvesting, but coffee tours through rural Dota are enjoyable every month of the year.
