Jah B · Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee

The Jah B Coffee Story

This amazing double rainbow greeted us just as we arrived in the Blue Mountains from Kingston in November 2011.

After having spent a few days in Jah B's guesthouse some months before to climb the Blue Mountain Peak (2256 m), this time we were here for a different reason: coffee

Already back in 2009 on our very first visit to Jah B's guesthouse, as passionate coffee-lovers we were wowed by the delectable Blue Mountain Coffee served to us there. On our next visit to Jamaica in April 2011, we spent a longer while with Jah B and found out more about his aim to acquire his own licence for growing, marketing and exporting Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee as the first independent smallholder.

In Jamaica there are essentially 2 types of coffee farm: on the one hand, relatively large, usually centrally administered farms which are typically under the ownership of a few very rich families or foreign investors - often from Japan or China.

Most of the coffee, however, is grown by smallholders who often cultivate only very small plots. As they are not allowed to process the coffee themselves, these smallholders have to sell the raw coffee cherries to the large coffee processors at relatively low prices who then in turn blend the coffee they have received and sell it under their own brand. The largest and most well-known of this kind of company include, for example, the „Mavis Bank Coffee Factory“ with their „Jablum“ brand or the „Wallenford Coffee Company“ which has its roots in the colonial system.

Jah B did not want to resign himself to simply being a coffee cherry supplier to these conglomerates. When he was given the opportunity in 2009 to cultivate the „Radnor Estate“ coffee farm which had been lying fallow for 20 years, little by little he began to cultivate the farm again despite the most humble means.

When we saw Radnor Estate for the first time in November 2011, we were immediately wowed by this special place. Historical wall remains, an ancient water wheel, coffee and banana plants in the midst of an unspoilt landscape characterised by steep hillsides.

Over the following days we worked together with Jah B on a concept to make the farm more productive and for it to be in line with the necessary demands for licensing. To the extent of our means, we were also able to make a financing commitment to support this development and to secure fair wages for the employees on the farm.

This enabled the farm to develop magnificently in 2012 until finally in October hurricane „Sandy“ raged across the East of Jamaica. This damaged many plants and, worse still, a new disease known as „Coffee Leaf Rust“ spread through the coffee plants after the hurricane.

This disease, brought in by the hurricane and benefiting from the very damp climate in the Blue Mountains, affected the bulk of the coffee plants in a short space of time.

It was only after several months that the attack could be repelled with the use of plant-strengthening agents. As coffee is a very slow-growing plant - it takes years until a newly cultivated plant produces coffee cherries - everything was undertaken to help the remaining stock of plants recover.

At the same time hundreds of seedlings were lifted and after a few months of pre-growth they were planted out on the farm.

After 4 years of hard work, an important milestone was reached in November 2013: the farm finally met the demands of the licensing authorities, the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica, and Jah B received approval to market and export his coffee himself.

This also provided the pre-conditions to request an import licence for our company Grow City. After overcoming a number of bureaucratic hurdles, in November 2014 we were the first Austrian company to hold the coveted licence in our hands.

As Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee can only be exported freshly harvested, it still took until March 2015 before the first wooden barrels of raw coffee arrived in Vienna.

We are therefore very excited to be able to exclusively offer this extraordinary coffee in Europe.

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee belongs in the top drawer of coffee specialities. The coffee trees are grown between 910 and 1700 metres in altitude.

The growing area is just about 6,000 hectares. The mist, cool temperatures and strong rainfall are the main factors for a special climate in the Blue Mountains.

The coffee cherries therefore ripen very slowly and develop a wonderfully balanced and full-bodied aroma.

Jah B Coffee is lovingly cultivated by hand and carefully processed in the best growing area in the Blue Mountains. Our farm - Radnor Estate - lies at 1000 m above sea level near the Blue Mountain Peak.

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee is generally suitable for any method of coffee preparation. To experience the full spectrum of aromas, we recommend preparing it with an AeroPress, a French Press or a Chemex Coffeemaker.

Clydesdale Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee

Clydesdale is a renowned coffee growing region located in the parish of St. Andrew - formerly the parish of Port Royal - at an average altitude of 1000 meters. It is nestled in the Grand Ridge which is home to Jamaica’s largest National Park and Forest reserve. The Clydesdale coffee region is located at the very center of the Blue Mountain coffee area, which is why we can say it is “ at the Heart of the Blue Mountains…”

Origin of the Clydesdale Estate

Clydesdale Estate was founded in the late 1700s by Dr. Colin McClarty, a British national who came to Jamaica for what he thought would be a short visit but fell in love with the country and decided to stay. It was one of the first estates to plant coffee commercially in Jamaica. Following Dr. McClarty’s example and realizing the excellent quality coffee produced in this area, other farmers ventured into coffee production in the vicinity of Clydesdale Estate.

It is from these beginnings that the Clydesdale coffee region evolved. Clydesdale Estate Coffee was first exported in the late 1700’s and because of the exceptional quality of the beans, it has remained an important coffee growing region since.

Clydesdale Coffee Today

Although no longer in operation, the Clydesdale Estate factory, drying patios, and water wheel can still be seen and still stand after more than two hundred years. Once a favourite getaway for honeymooners, the Clydesdale Great House along with the factory, have now been appointed by the Government of Jamaica as a National Heritage site. The farmers in the Clydesdale coffee region have continued the tradition and still produce an outstanding quality coffee, only of the Typica variety.

The Clydesdale brand represents coffees from this region and other select regions within the Southern slope of the Blue Mountains, which is the oldest coffee growing area in the Blue Mountains. In a new decade of excellence, the producers of Clydesdale coffee continue to celebrate the old traditions that have made this coffee world renowned.

Blue Mountain Coffee: From Jamaica to Papua New Guinea

Go behind the beans of our newest coffee, the Papua New Guinea Kunjin.

Why does everyone lose their minds over Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee? And what does Papua New Guinea have to do with it? On this week’s episode of Uncommon Grounds, Todd headed to Jamaica to try and source some of the world’s most famous beans.

Coffee plants were first brought to Jamaica in the 18 th century. They found their way to the Blue Mountains, the cool, misty mountain range behind Kingston, and thrived there. High altitudes and a chiller climate caused the plants to produce dense beans packed with rich flavors and aromas. It wasn’t long before Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee was renowned throughout the world as some of the best – and soon the most expensive – coffee on the market. While he was in Jamaica, Todd wasn’t able to find a high-quality yet affordable Blue Mountain coffee for La Colombe to buy and roast – but there was an alternative.

In the 1920s, the same plants were brought from the Blue Mountains to Papua New Guinea’s Waghi Valley. Today, the variety is growing there happily at high altitudes, yielding the same delicious, high-quality coffee as its Jamaican cousin.

Our newest single-origin brew, the Papua New Guinea Kunjin, lets you experience Blue Mountain coffee without paying Blue Mountain prices. This distinct coffee surprised us with notes of cedar that play well with the sweeter notes of grape and pralines. If you’ve always wanted to try Blue Mountain coffee, this will hit the spot!

6 Comments on Blue Mountain Coffee: From Jamaica to Papua New Guinea

Ugh. I bought a 1/4 pound of Blue Mountain from a local roasting company and I was really disappointed. I felt nothing. Tasted nothing but a light roast coffee that I wouldn’t bother with again. I tried it in a drip and again in a French press, but still was bored with it. What do I need to do to my palate to really appreciate the nuances that make this coffee so sought after? How do roasters determine the best roast temperature/level? Would this one be better as a darker roast? Did I mix it too thin?

Make sure it is the real thing, 100% Blue Mountain beans from Jamaica, medium to dark roast. I find it is better as a dark roast. You also have to really use well rounded scoops of grounds when you brew, it needs to be strong to bring out the nuances of the bean. It is very expensive, and an awesome alternative that my wife and I have been enjoying for years, is Papau New Guinea beans, which grow on that island at the same elevation as the Blue Mountain beans in Jamaica. The original bean plantings actually came from the Blue Mountain variety from Jamaica, so it’s not surprising that the Papau New Guinea is so excellent, at 1/3 the price of Blue Mountain.

Excellent and decent post, I read your article and find it is very informative. I am searching about Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee and after some time I found your post it ends my search. I really appreciate you for this post. Keep it up. Thanks.

Kenya Blue Mountain Coffee

Kenyan coffees are among the worlds best. Grown on the high plateau of Mount Elgon, this results in a coffee intense with flavour, full body and a pleasant aroma with notes of cocoa.

Personally I enjoy rounded smooth coffees and although Kenyan coffees are often described as having pronounced acidity, Kenya Blue Mountain has significant other attributes which compliments the acidity in its cup profile. It is a full-bodied, high-quality example of an excellent coffee.

Coffee growing came late to Kenya and the first estates were planted by French Monks, perfected by the British and is now almost entirely in the hands of Kenyan owners. In Kenya coffee is grown by both small-holders and on large plantations. Although the main growing area stretches south from the slopes of 17,000 foot Mount Kenya until reaching the outskirts of Nairobi, there is a second smaller growing area on the slopes of Mount Elgon on the borders of Uganda and Kenya. Kenya Blue Mountain comes from this second smaller growing area and in my opinion is one the best coffees to come from Kenya.

We roast all of our Kenyan coffees at a full medium roast which develops the sweetness and roundedness of the flavour whilst reducing some of the bright acidity.

It is an all-day drinker – gets you going in the morning and revitalises you in the late afternoon!

Brewing Hints: Brew for 3-4 minutes in a cafetiere or use a filter machine. Don't let Kenya Coffee stew!

    Roast Height: Medium Roast

Origin: Mount Kenya, near Nairobi, and Mount Elgon on the border of Uganda and Kenya

Characteristics: A full-bodied richness with a striking winey aftertaste

Serving Suggestions: Drink at any time of day. Kenya Coffee likes milk!

    Blue Mountains Tour in Jamaica

The Blue Mountains form the longest mountain range along the eastern edge of Jamaica and features majestic scenery.

Many people hike or bike through the mountains to witness first-hand nature at its finest.

This under-explored area is also the source of the world famous and fragrant Blue Mountain Coffee.

The ride up to the Blue Mountains is an interesting one. The roads are narrow, winding and unmarked, however, definitely worth it as the views are beautiful and a joy to behold. The mountain views are spectacular.

The Blue Mountains is home to quaint villages and the locals that live in the mountains are very friendly.

You also get to view waterfalls and tiny restaurants throughout. Fauna and Flora are so beautiful here.

The Tour You can start at the Lodge – Whitfield Hall (elevation 4000ft) and hike to the peak, which is an elevation of 7400ft.

The trail is easy to follow with signs every step of the way.

Some areas of the path are flat, whereas, other areas have rocky gravel that make it slightly more difficult to walk.

There are hiking trails for varying skill levels. Short trails are suited for those who would rather a nice easy stroll among the flora and fauna and longer trails for those who like to be more physically challenged.

You can opt to do a night hike. It is a lot more quiet, completely dark except for your flashlights, and very serene and peaceful. Hopefully you make it to the top in time to witness a breathtaking sunrise. Once you arrive at the peak you realize the journey was totally worth it.

This attraction is not for everyone. You don’t have to be extremely active to complete this tour, however, be prepared to walk for about 3 to 4 hours to reach to the peak. You will also have to be able to make the trip back down.

We suggest less experienced hikers hire a guide or join a group tour that lead them to the top.

I strongly suggest that if you want to see the sunrise you should hike from Mavis Bank the evening before and stay at one of the lodges overnight. Then set out around 6am for a picnic.

The Blue Mountain Inn is a good option for dinner. The setting is beautiful and the food is incredible.

They have a sitting room with coffee liqueur for the ladies and cigar for the men. Biking tours are also available which run about 17 miles down through the Blue Mountains. The journey begins around 6,000 feet elevation and ends at a waterfall where all can enjoy a cool and relaxing swim.

Soldiers do their drills in their uniforms at Newcastle so you may get a chance to witness that as well.

Blue Mountain also boasts coffee plantation tours – there are plenty around, some large and some small. Visitors get to see how coffee beans are gathered and processed to make the world famous coffee.

What makes Blue Mountain Coffee so great? Blue Mountain Coffee is fantastic and worth a try, much better than most coffee from the supermarket.

What to bring: Good walking shoes Water Long sleeved shirt (preferable) – dress in layers for the hike Some snacks for the hike Did you know? That Blue Mountain Peak is the highest point in Jamaica at more than 7,400 feet; also the fifth highest mountain in all of the Caribbean… On a clear day, you can see all the way to Haiti and Cuba from the peak…
