Iced Avocado and Coffee Drink (Es Alpukat)

In the U.S., avocados are most often eaten in savory dishes, sliced to adorn salads or made into guacamole.

As a little girl, my mum would make us a very simple snack–she’d halve an avocado, drizzle some palm sugar syrup (made by melting gula jawa a.k.a. arenga palm sugar) over each half and hand us a spoon. I’d scoop out the flesh bit by little bit, making sure I got a good dose of caramelly syrup with each spoonful of creamy avocado.

I still eat avocados this way once in awhile but I’m more likely to make es alpukat, a light and refreshing that satisfies my craving for something sweet on a hot summer day. Es alpukat (literally iced avocado) is ubiquitous in Indonesia, available at just about any restaurant or at a street-side stall, but it’s easy enough to make at home.

The name makes no mention of it but coffee is usually added to the drink. You can always leave it out or substitute with chocolate milk.

What’s your favorite way with avocados?

Iced Avocado and Coffee Drink (Es Alpukat)

Es Alpukat is the perfect dessert if you are following a heart-healthy diet. The rich, creamy flesh of avocado gives this drink richness and body but it contains “good” mono and polyunsaturated fats, is naturally cholesterol-free as well as being chock full of nutrients like Vitamin E and folate. So you can drink up guilt-free. The Indonesian way is to serve it over ice and scoop out the avocado chunks with a spoon, but you can blend it like a milkshake–and add ice cream!– if you prefer.

Makes: 4 (1-cup) servings

1/3 cup espresso plus 2/3 cup water, or 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled

2 cups whole or 2 percent milk

1/4 cup Pandan Syrup (see below)

Chocolate syrup (optional)

Using a tablespoon, scoop avocado flesh in bite-sized chunks into a medium bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

To serve, squirt the chocolate syrup to coat the insides of 4 tall, clear glasses. Divide the mixture equally. Add ice cubes and sprinkle with ground coffee just before serving.

All this is is a rich simple syrup steeped with pandan leaves with a 2:1 sugar-to-water ratio so you can adjust amounts according to your needs. Use one pandan leaf for every cup of sugar. The cooled syrup can be bottled and keeps in the refrigerator for up to two months. You can use the syrup to sweeten teas and other mixed drinks too.

Time: 15 minutes

2 pandan leaves, trimmed and tied into separate knots

In a medium (2-quart) saucepan, combine all ingredients and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and stir continuously until the sugar dissolves, about 8 to 10 minutes.

Remove the leaves and pour the syrup into a jar or bottle. Refrigerate for up to two months.

I LOVE avocados in savory foods, but my favorite is how my (Filipino) mom used to prepare it for us as kids: avocado milk — smashed up avocado with some milk and a spoonful of sugar. Or she’d freeze the same avocado milk mixture in ice pop molds for a yummy summer treat!

Hi Charlynne, I love the idea of avocado milk pops. I’ve been meaning to make some for my little guy. Thanks for dropping by!

Gorgeous idea! I love how avocados are eaten for dessert in SE Asia. Hope you’re staying cool, Pat!

Hi Ann, avocado desserts are delightful and so much lighter–great for really hot days!

You may think I’m absolutely crazy for putting avocado and coffee together in a smoothie — but if you try it, you just might be absolutely delighted!

And, as I mentioned in a recent article, I use avocado as the thickening, creamy ingredient for my healthful chocolate pudding recipe.

We’ve probably all heard that the claims being made are that coffee has antioxidants and is actually good — not bad! — for us.

And what better way to make yourself lose the guilt for enjoying coffee by incorporating the numerous health benefits of avocado?!

Do you know that avocado is chock-full of nutrition and health benefits?

  • promotes heart health
  • promotes overall health
  • increases absorption of carotenoids from vegetables
  • combats oral cancer
  • and more!

Avocado Coffee Smoothie Recipe

* 1 small avocado

* 4 coffee cubes (just pour leftover coffee in an ice tray to create your coffee cubes — it can be black or mixed with creamer/sweetener while still hot)

* splash or two of cold milk or coffee (black or mixed with creamer/sweetener of choice — I make up coffee with my favorite creamer/sweeteners and stir it to dissolve and keep some in the fridge for the times I want a delicious cold/iced coffee)

1. Toss all ingredients in your blender (I have an Osterizer.)

2. Press the crush ice button until ice is broken down.

3. Press blend button until it looks smoother.

4. Finish off with a few whirls of the liquefy button.

5. Pour and enjoy!

NOTE: I do not taste the avocado in this recipe — the avocado simply provides tons of nutrition and volume. If you like your coffee really sweet, you’ll want to add your sweetener before blending. My coffee smoothie ends up similar to a mocha flavor, in my opinion.

Variations: You could easily add hazelnut or other flavored creamers to your coffee while it’s hot and then freeze that in your ice tray or put it in the fridge to use as your cold “splash or two” of coffee.

You can make this coffee smoothie taste any way you want, just use the avocado as your base for the creamy volume. It takes on the flavor of whatever you add, so have fun and go for it!

Coffee & Quinoa

Green smoothies are the name of the game today. Funny-lookin’? Oh ja. Delicious? You betcha.

Let’s kick it off with my top 5 reasons you should make this smoothie:

4. It’s silky smooth from the avocado.

3. It’s like horchata, but healthy!

2. “Horchata” is fun to say.

1. And the number one reason you should make this smoothie is… that you will get it all to yourself because it is green and gloppy but secretly delicious.

Not to hurt this guy’s feelings, but yeah – green and gloppy.

This smoothie shows its true colors, and its true colors are GREEN. It’s not hiding the fact that the main ingredient here is avocado.

I’ve wanted to post an horchata recipe here for some time, but I couldn’t get over the fact that most horchata recipes have so. much. sugar. Then, in Denver at the beginning of last month, I saw this avocado-based green horchata on a menu (for brunch at Linger!) and knew it was the one.

Perfectly sweet and cinnamon-y, but also not SO sweet. Plus it’s green… so that counts for something, right?! It does taste like avocado, but the avocado also adds that rich, smooth creaminess that only avocado can. It’s delicious if I do say so myself.

So yes, you will get this smoothie all to yourself, because it looks like a “health food” in every negative connotation of the phrase. But you will know what everyone else is missing out on… smooth, creamy horchata deliciousness! I hope you love this one as much as we did.

  • 1 avocado
  • 1 and 1/2 cups rice milk
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 2 Tbsp agave nectar
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • sprinkle of ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • optional for serving: medjool date, pitted and rolled in sugar
  1. Blend all ingredients until smooth. Taste adjust as necessary. If you'd like a thinner smoothie, add 1/2 cup more rice milk. Serve with a sugared date if you want to be extra fancy! Enjoy.

This sounds like an amazing smoothie! I’ve never used avocado in a smoothie (go ahead and take away my blogger card) mainly because avocados just go straight into my mouth with little fanfare, but I think I’ve been doing them a disservice now that I’ve seen this.

LOL, are you sure you’re not from Minnesota?! ;) Even if it’s green and gloopy, it looks delicious!

Beautiful smoothie. I love avocado in my smoothies- and I often waste the 2nd half of avocados by forgetting to eat the other half after I’ve cut it open- now I just automatically throw the 2nd half in the freezer, and it’s there when it’s smoothie time. Will have to try these spices!

I’m uhhhbsessed with horchata–I actually just had one over the weekend–so a horchata smoothie sounds amazingggg. Pinned!

Holy horchata! Loving the avocado green hue! The only recipes I’ve ever seen for this are super sugary. This looks rest though – the ingredient list passes the rest for me :) I’ll be sure to share this with my friend Luisa she loves horchata and would swoon over how figure friendly this is.

wow this smoothie looks so creamy and delicious! Yummy!!

I absolutely love horchata! I used to work at a restaurant that sold it and sometimes I would steal the horchata powder so I could make it at home! I love that you used avocado in this smoothie too! It looks healthy and delicious, I could go for one of these for dessert right now!

I love my green smoothies, yours looks so yummy.

The Avocado Tour

Seeing the avocado plantation, learning about how avocados grow and hearing about the plantations plans for future expansion was fascinating.

Tasting at the end was delicious.

I have recommended this tour to many people and every single time people came back happy for the recommendation.

At the end of the tour get the chance to enjoy a delicious guacamole and Lear about the technique that the people that grows avocados use to prepare the most delicious guaco ever, forget about the farm to table, you are eating it still in the farm :) with freaky hand made corn tortillas and delightful smoothie.

it feels like a mini vacation from vacations :)

The entire tour was well organised, the tour guide was extremely knowledgable and engaging. I had no idea that growing avocados for commercial purposes could be so challenging. The farm isn't a large one but they have been experimenting for so long that they had lots of experience that is tried and proven.

The tour ended with a tasting, and a smoothie that was to die for.

I definitely encourage anyone visiting the area to include it in their schedule.

Thanks so much for your review, we're very happy you had a great time and you enjoyed our Avo-smoothie! :)

Both are 10ј" tall with a 5ѕ" diameter base. The 9 cup version weighs 4.4 ounces more than the 10 cup version.

The 9 cup model is not as rounded at the base as the 10 cup model.

I filled the 9 cup model to the dot at the 9 cup mark, I then poured it into the 10 cup model.

The 9 cups now filled to the 10 cup mark. So, either Corning Glass Works figured out how to create matter,

or they just changed the cup size.
