“Kaffee schwarz” or “schwarzer Kaffee”

I’m studying German using the book Berliner Platz and I read in it someone saying:

Ich trinke Kaffee schwarz.

Shouldn’t schwarz (adjective) go before the noun Kaffee as in

Ich trinke schwarzen Kaffee.

"Schwarz" serves as an adverb here. "Den Kaffee schwarz trinken" has a special meaning of drinking coffee without milk.

Bye bye, Miss American Pie. In diesem Klassiker der amerikanischen Popmusik trinkt man "Whiskey and Rye". Whiskey, klar, aber was bitte ist eigentlich Rye? Und wie unterscheiden sich die beiden? Der amerikanische Bourbon hat jüngst eine Renaissance erlebt. Jetzt sind Ryes auf dem Vormarsch, nachdem sie in der Prohibition (1920-1933) fast von der Landkarte verschwunden wären. Die neue Lust am Rye kommt nicht von ungefähr: Würzig, trocken und fruchtig, können Ryes mit schottischen und japanischen Single Malts durchaus mithalten. An diesem Abend werden wir sechs hervorragende Ryes und Single Malts verkosten - jedoch ohne rauchige und torfige Noten. Jede Sorte wird mit Finger Foods gereicht, die den Geschmack perfekt abrunden.

09.05.14 um 19 Uhr in der Villa Hasenholz: The Naked Whiskey Tasting: Bourbon vs. Rye

Nun, wir werden nicht nackt testen, sondern den "nackten" Whiskey testen, d.h. bevor dieser überhaupt ein Fass von innen sieht. So können wir erkennen wie ein Whiskey entsteht und welche Charaktereigenschaften er annimmt, nachdem er durch eine Reifung gegangen ist. Also von 0 bis 12 Jahre alte Bourbons. insgesamt drei). Dann beschäftigen wir uns ein wenig mit seinem Cousin, dem Rye Whiskey, (davon zwei).

Schwarzer Kaffee vs schwarzen Kaffee

I need to know why do we say "schwarzen Kaffee, bitte" and not "schwarzer Kaffee, bitte". To me, it should be "schwarzer Kaffee", however, I am being told it is the other way around.

I assume you are using these phrases in the context of placing an order.

is a short form of

Ich hätte gerne (einen) schwarzen Kaffee, bitte.

Ich möchte (einen) schwarzen Kaffee, bitte.

“Schwarzer kaffee, bitte!” could be used to tell the black coffee to behave. ;)

Trying to emphasize the grammar background, I offer this answer:

It is because the line is an answer to the question "What may I serve to you?" or "What do you want?".

The reply is in the case accusative, answering "whom or what?", to which you reply "schwarzen Kaffee", while "schwarzer Kaffee" would be nominative, answering to "Who or what?".

In English, the adjective "schwarz"/"black" is the same in both cases, but in German, it isn't.

In contrast, if you are asked "What is your favourite drink"/"Was ist ihr Lieblingsgetränk?", you'd answer with a nominative, like "Schwarzer Kaffee".
