Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival 2016
Even though it’s still sunny and warm outside, there’s a nip in the air with the promise of fall to come. One of my favourite things about fall is the Kürbisausstellung Ludwigsburg (Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival), the largest pumpkin festival in the world which takes place in the beautiful sprawling gardens of the Schloss Ludwigsburg (Luwigsburg Palace).
I loved visiting the festivals in 2014 and 2015 when the themes were ‘Royalty’ and ‘Pumpkins in Flight’. This year’s theme is ‘Welcome to the Circus’ so all the statues and displays have something to do with the circus, acrobatics, performers, or clowns.
We went to the festival on a warm Tuesday afternoon. As I discovered last year, you can save 3 Euros on the regular price admission (8,50 Euros) by entering the gardens after 5:30pm with the Abendkarte. However, some of the festival offerings close early, like the Pumpkin Gourmet restaurant at 5:30pm and the souvenir shop and culinary pumpkin stands at 6pm. Tip: If you only want to see the pumpkin displays and avoid the crowds, then I still would suggest getting the Abendkarte (evening ticket) after 5:30pm – those tickets actually go on sale at 5:25pm. If you want to experience everything on offer at the festival, then go earlier in the day and pay regular admission.

There are many entrances to the gardens, but we entered through the main palace entrance just off of Schorndorfer Straße and walked all the way through the inner palace courtyard to get to the gardens. Tip: Be sure just to buy the garden entry ticket unless you actually want to go inside the palace because once we bought the wrong ticket and it took a while to sort out!
Once inside the garden, take your time exploring the different statues and figures on display. I think ‘Welcome to the Circus’ is the best year yet! Here are a few of my favourite shots from the day:
They did a great job creating circus performers (horse-riding acrobats, knife throwers, and clowns) and showing off circus animals like elephants and tigers, too. The most visually stunning display is the tightrope walker with all the colourful flags emulating the inside of a circus tent.

The restaurant was pretty much closed by the time we got there, but I did peek at the menu. You can enjoy spaghetti with pumpkin seed pesto, rice with pumpkin and vegetables, pumpkin soup, pumpkin tart, pumpkin strudel and pumpkin pound cake, just to name a few. If you go to the restaurant, let me know what you think of the dishes!
We also had a chance to visit the store selling all types of decorative items and pumpkin products. We tried a pumpkin chutney on a little piece of bread which we saw for sale in this store. I also spotted pumpkin puree for those looking to make their North American-style pumpkin dishes. (It was 4,50 Euros though for a small jar, so be forewarned).
The Ludwigsburg Pumpkin festival runs from September 2 – November 6, 2016 at the Blühendes Barock in Ludwigsburg. There are special events running every weekend, from pumpkin canoe regattas to giant pumpkin carvings to pumpkin weigh offs and pumpkin smashings. To see the full list of special events throughout the festival and opening hours, you can visit the website (in English) here.

I LOVE your pictures! I haven’t been at the Pumpkin Festivals for years and your post make me wanna go right away! :-)
Thanks Mel! You should definitely check it out this year – they did such a good job with the figures! :)
Lovely photographs! I am organizing a group trip to the festival this year and have a couple of questions: 1. Since there are many entrances into the gardens, what entrance (or location within the gardens) would you suggest as a meeting point? 2. I was told the entrance fee is 7 Euro for adults and 3.5 Euro for children, is this not correct? 3. Is there free parking for the festival? Thank you so much!

Ludwigsburg Baroque Christmas Market 2015
I’m a bit of a Christmas market collector – I love to visit as many as I can during the Advent season. I adored the Esslingen Christmas and Medieval Market that I finally got to visit last year, as well as the Stuttgart Christmas Market and Ludwigsburg Baroque Christmas Market. I have quite a few more Christmas market trips planned in the coming weeks since my Mom is coming to visit from Canada and she, like me, wants to see as many as possible.
My first market visit of the season was back to the Ludwigsburg Baroque Christmas Market. It opened earlier this week and S and I went to check it out on a Thursday afternoon before dusk. It was laid out almost exactly as I remember it from last year, with the food stands ringing the perimeter of the Marktplatz and shops selling everything from ornaments to scarves to sweets nestled within the square. At the very centre of the square are also some more drink and food stands selling Glühwein (mulled wine, either red or white with optional additional shots of alcohol) as well as non-alcoholic drinks.
Ham, cheese and garlic Langos and mulled wine
We were extremely hungry when we arrived and I unabashedly beelined straight for the Lángos stand. In case you’re new to my blog, Lángos is my latest festival food obsession. It’s a Hungarian deep-fried flatbread served with either sweet or savoury toppings. I’ve tried sweet ones with apple sauce and Nutella, cream cheese and strawberries, as well as savoury ones with sour cream and grated cheese and they are all delicious. This time I opted for garlic, cheese and ham. It was fried to order and oh so warm and delicious. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into with the garlic though – I thought it would be cooked garlic but it was raw! I definitely bit into some peanut-sized chunks of garlic on that Lángos (but it was amazing – no regrets!).
With a mug of hot Glühwein to wash it down, we toured around the market and soaked in the festive atmosphere.

Visiting a Besen in Germany
Last week I got a chance to visit my first Besen in Germany. A Besen (which translates to ‘broom’ in German) is the name for a seasonal wine tavern/mini-restaurant. They are especially popular in Swabia, the region of southwest Germany where I live in the state of Baden-Württemberg.
Winegrowers and winemakers turn their homes, dining rooms or rebuilt barns into temporary restaurants where they serve wine from their own vineyards and hearty home-cooked meals. They can legally run a Besen (also known as Besenwirtschaften or Besenschänke in Württemberg) without a restaurant or bar license, though not for longer than four months out of the year and not for more than twice a year.
How do you locate a Besen? Look for the broom hanging in front of a home or building! This signals that the Besen is open for business.
I first learned about Besen when I attended the Stuttgart Steps tour in Stuttgart last year. Our guide pointed out an old-fashioned stick broom hanging in front of a building in the Bohnenviertel and told us about the Besen tradition. I have been meaning to visit one ever since but I never got around to it – until now!
I’m kicking myself a little for waiting as long as I did – even though I’ve only been to one so far, I loved it. We went to Geiger’s Weinstüble in Ludwigsburg on its opening day. Needless to say, it was packed inside when we arrived around 6:45pm.
I was expecting to pull up to a small little living room but was surprised to find a lovely white building dedicated solely to serving Besen visitors. We had a little trouble finding a seat as all of the benches and tables were occupied, but luckily a group was leaving just as we arrived so we were able to squeeze in at the end of a bench. Besen are known for their cozy atmosphere since they are relatively small – it’s a great way to meet locals and hear the local dialect!

Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival 2015
Despite being slightly in denial that summer is over, I was eager to check out the Kürbisausstellung Ludwigsburg (Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival) last week. I loved visiting last year’s festival when the theme was ‘Royalty’ and I was looking forward to going again this year. S’s sister visited us for a few days last week and we thought it would be fun to check out the annual autumn festival right at the beginning of its run.
This year’s theme is ‘Pumpkins in Flight’ so all the statues and displays have something to do with flying, air travel or wings. The Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival is the world’s largest pumpkin festival and takes place in the beautiful sprawling gardens of the Schloss Ludwigsburg (Luwigsburg Palace).
We went late on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. We were planning to go earlier in the day, but after checking out the ticket prices online, I found out that adults can save 3 Euros on the regular price admission (8,50 Euros) by entering the gardens after 5:30pm. While it was nice to save a little money on admission, we did miss out on some of the other festival offerings, like the Pumpkin Gourmet restaurant that closed at 5:30pm or the souvenir shop and culinary pumpkin stands that closed at 6pm. Tip: If you only want to see the pumpkin displays and avoid the crowds, then I suggest getting the Abendkarte (evening ticket) after 5:30pm like we did. If you want to experience everything at the festival, then spring for a regular price ticket in the early afternoon.
There are lots of different entrances to the gardens, but we entered through the main palace entrance just off of Schorndorfer Straße and walked all the way through the inner palace courtyard to get to the gardens. Tip: Be sure just to buy the garden entry ticket unless you actually want to go inside the palace because once we bought the wrong ticket and it took a while to sort out!
Once inside the garden, take your time strolling around and admiring the different statues and figures on display. Here are a few of my favourite shots from the day:
