Kaffee Alt Wien

Kaffee Alt Wien was founded in Vienna on October 14th 1922 first at Bäckerstrasse in Vienna´s first district. In 1936 Leopold and Josefine Hawelka took over Kaffee Alt Wien one day after their wedding for a periode of three years to finally take over Cafe Ludwig, which is known as the famous Cafe Hawelka. Kaffee Alt Wien is a family-owned enterprise since 1939. Since the 1980s Kaffee Alt Wien has developed as a night location. Due to the opening hours Kaffee Alt Wien is both traditional viennese Kaffehaus and Beisl, which is a typical small restaurant serving beer and goulash. Among guests from all over the world, Kaffee Alt Wien is frequented by artists, writers and journalists.

Gruff and inattentive waiters who without tact grunted that the tip wasn’t included while I was still in my wallet getting tips.

Given other recent TripAdvisor reviews and photos it’s quite probably that there is an alternative English menu on a single A4 sheet, with different prices. Might be worth requesting the German one (comes as a book).

you Need not stand in line for the dried up service or luke-warm beer for your very meal on the table. Though timing would have been everything for the very best schnitzel experience of mine, I had a very impressive first dinner in Vienna. Given the fact of the goulash a bit salty for the very balance with a beer, the potatoes with the schnitzel was the very welcoming meal for me. Wonderful taste of 'yesterday' by the name of ' kaffee alt wien'. Come.

We booked a table for the 8 of us, and were.

We booked a table for the 8 of us, and were shown into a corner where a table for six at the most was situated. After asking some of the other customers if they could move there cjhairs we eventually managed to squeze in to our alloted space.

As it was a saturday night the place was quite full, however, the waiter who pointed us to our table soon came over and threw some menus on our tables and asked us if we were ready to order. We were still trying to take our coats off and rearrange the seats at this stage.

The drinks order was fairly simple, four beers, a diet coke, a G&T, white wine, and a sparkling wine. The waiter was very confused by this last drink, and when he went to check came back and informed us there was none.

Drinks served, we were then asked what we wanted to eat, again fairly straightforward. Six for goulash one for Snitzel. As there was no vegetarian option one of our party had to go hungry.

We had read many reviews about how good the goulash was in Alt Wien, we were all looking forward to it. Obviously those people had never had goulash before, as it was very dissappointing. Every plate was the same, half the meat was cold, the gravy was warm and the meat was very gristly.

One of our group decided that they wanted another drink whilst having his gruel, and asked for a glass of red wine. When the waiter returned, someone else, politely asked for another drink, only for the waiter to get stroppy and demand if anyone else wanted another drink, as he wasn't going to keep coming bacwards and forwards to our table.

It may have helped if there were more staff on, as he seemed to be the only waiter in the place, and was also behind the bar pouring drinks and running in to the kitchen to get the food.

However, that is no excuse for being downright rude.

Needless to say, we didn't stay for strudel, but went elsewhere to a more relaxed cafe, with friendlier staff.

If you like a cramped atmosphere, with surly staff and cold food, I'd recommend you eat here.

If you want a decent meal, with real goulash and friendly staff, there are plenty of other places in Vienna.

Kaffee Alt Wien: a Viennese Coffeehouse with old-world bohemian charm

Kaffee Alt Wien:

a Viennese Coffeehouse

Vienna Würstelstand's Jacob Moss says

“You won’t be shy if I join you, will you?” A man with a slight wonk to his walk asks me as he lines himself up next to me at the pissoir. I, with my fly undone and exposed, feel a blushing coming on but play it cool, as all men do at the urinal.

“You can look at mine if you want, the ladies say it’s cute,” he says before laughing out loud and starting to sing. I zip up and leave the singing, chatty urinator and escape back into the café. You meet all kinds of characters here at Kaffee Alt Wien.

Resuming my place on the red velvet bench seat, hidden in a tiny enclave of the snugly lit café, I listen to a big bellied man educate a couple of German tourists in a thick Viennese dialect about the legend Kaffee Alt Wien owns – in between slurps of his soup.

“This place was the place for all sorts of artists, writers, poets and down right crazy characters long before the tourists arrived.” This makes me think of the drunken poet that had sat down next to me and my date here one night and sold me a poetry magazine he had written for. He had gone straight to the bar afterwards and bought himself red wine with his profits. We watched him earn his wine the same way with the other tables throughout the evening. The big bellied man’s words still apply today at Kaffee Alt Wien. It has that kind of charisma that can’t be artificially conjured, but a place can only grow into.

The waiter drops a pile of glasses with dregs of beer left in them on my table so he can scribble my order onto his little pad. The infamous attitude that comes with smartly dressed Viennese waiters is well played here.

I order a Melange (the Viennese version of a Cappuccino) and the Apfelstrudel – which is, in our humble opinion, the best strudel in the city. It’s said to be made from a family recipe, handed down from generations.

“It’s also the place for a richtig gutes Wiener Gulasch,” adds the big-bellied man.

Kaffee Alt Wien (and its Gulasch) carries a legend that has gone viral amongst tourist guides in recent years, hence the mix of young students seeking the bohemian mojo, tourists taking photos, veteran Stammgäste (regulars) perched on the bar, and creative types sat at the typical coffeehouse Thonet chairs, around the typical marble top tables.

It’s the poor man’s, bohemian Viennese Coffeehouse, especially when compared to the other well known coffeehouses of the city center, like Café Central. There is one other famous Viennese coffeehouse that shares the same cigarette-smoke-stained, dimly lit, roughed-up charm look – Café Hawelka. There’s a reason for that, as the Kaffee Alt Wien and Café Hawelka share the same parents. Leopold and Josefine Hawelka opened Kaffee Alt Wien on the day after their wedding in 1936, before moving onto open Café Hawelka in 1939.

There’s a guy talking to himself at the bar, while another guy scoops at lavish servings of mustard and horse radish with his Frankfurter sausages which disappear into his mouth, followed by a tear of a Semmel (bread roll). Within 5 minutes he is done, and so is his Krügerl (pint) of beer. He wipes his fingers on the newspaper he’s reading in the meantime.

The café is a living museum of past and present Vienna. It’s also one of the only cafés you’ll get the sneaking suspicion that the place is shrinking – year’s worth of posters have been layered on top of each other, leaving little bare wall to be seen.

The coffee (or whatever your beverage be) and cigarettes can be enjoyed in the front room, however there is also a large non-smoking room in the back.

With its long opening hours, Kaffee Alt Wien lives two lives, every day of its life – by day it’s a café and by night (from about 5pm onwards) it’s typically full with a crowd drinking wine and beer, and a atmosphere more akin to a Beisl (a Viennese type of bar). That’s what is one of its charming attributes – it’s whatever you want it to be. For the literary or artistic type, it has the feel of a place where inspiration is born. For everybody else, its unpretentious old charm charisma makes you feel you’re in the midst of creatives.

The prices are also unpretentious. The food menu is brief, with the typical Viennese classic dishes at reasonable prices, while the drinks list is strictly beer, wine and spirits, alongside the standard hot drinks. And while a Melange in many coffeehouses will typically mean an average coffee with a pile of milk foam on top, Kaffee Alt Wien has evolved, and serves up a quality, creamy alternative.

While Kaffee Alt Wien’s fame has morphed it into a popular, busy haunt for all sorts, it’s somehow been able to maintain its personality – which speaks with a sigh, one eyebrow raised, and an exhaling of cigarette smoke – of the Viennese charm.

Where Viennese tradition is at home

For centuries, coffee houses have been the unofficial hubs of Viennese society. This is where politicians meet journalists, actors meet theatre directors, authors write their books and others play chess or read a newspaper.

Coffee houses are places of relaxation, of reflection and of idleness, they are a living tradition entirely devoted to indulgence and Viennese hospitality.

At Café Schwarzenberg, Vienna's foremost café at Ringstraße, these values and traditions are still preserved. Here you can relax and have a chat while enjoying traditional coffee specialties, fine pastries and delightful Viennese delicacies.

The culinary offerings are complemented by cultural events such as private viewings, concerts and readings. Guests also have a wide choice of international newspapers.

About Kaffee Alt Wien, Vienna

Kaffee Alt Wien is a traditional Viennese café located at Bäckerstraße 9 in the Innere Stadt first district in Vienna, Austria. It was established in 1936 by Leopold Hawelka and his wife Josefine on the day after their wedding. They ran the café until 1939 at which time they moved to Dorotheergasse, where they opened a new coffee house, the famous Café Hawelka. The Alt Wien is nowadays not one of Vienna's chic coffee houses, but instead rather smoky and gloomy, and the clientele often includes bizarre characters. Consequently, in 1976, a notable happening by the Viennese artist Gottfried Helnwein took place in the café. Since the 1980s, the Kaffee Alt Wien has developed into a night café.

Kaffee Alt Wien, Vienna Reviews - Write a Review

We went on a Monday night with it freezing outside. The waiter was quite nice and the cafe warm, but his English was as bad as my German. My wife who knows no German was able to understand the menu with a tiny bit of assistance. We both had the Wiener Schnitzel and both were exceptionally pleased. I will come back if/when I'm back in Vienna. My wife says the women's restroom for is clear glass, but fogs when it is locked.

Rude waiter, saw we were struggling with menu and proceeded to make fun of us because we asked him to explain some of the dishes. They obviously don't need the custom of tourists if they can afford to be rude to their foreign patrons. Avoid if you are not Austrian.

Cozy warm nice place. Small menu, goulash very tasty. Quick service at lunch. Central position. They don't accept cards, only cash.

This pub dates back to 1936 and it's a less touristy establishment than other places in the centre of Vienna. The walls are covered with posters and other 'pieces of art' and fortunately there is a non-smoking room at the back. The ladies toilet is a bit of a surprise - not what one would expect from a place that old ;)

and so it is, and so is Kaffee alt Wien. star5, cause the beer glass has the name of the restaurant, small goulash was a perfect match with the bread, schnitzel was alrighty with the potatoes living up to the exact expectation as I was having. not fashionable yet has the core to say this is the place you visit for a schnitzel in Vienna. Had a pleasant night with the good food in front of me. and of course. the beer. my second visit I had a glass of white wine, which has one of the best taste I've ever tasted. This place has the great apple pie as well just so you know. well, you'll like it. smoking area and non-smoking area separated by the glass door. opens late, 2 in the morning. ciao!

    Coffee Houses in Vienna

The Kaffeehaus (traditional coffee house) is a typical Viennese institution. Basically a café for enjoying a good cup of coffee with friends or accompanied by a newspaper in a relaxed atmosphere, different other treats (such as tea, drinks, cakes and small snacks) are served as well. Visiting a couple of these places reveals a great variety and is definitely a must for every visitor to Vienna.

The Vienna coffeehouses are said to date back to the 17th century Ottoman wars: When Vienna was liberated from the second Turkish siege by an Polish-Habsburg army in 1683, the victorious allies captured numerous sacks with coffee beans they initially thought were camel feed. A wise Polish army officer, understanding the actual value of these beans, is said to have asked his king Jan Sobieski for the coffee bags and thus was able to open up the first coffeehouse in Vienna - consequently establishing the long tradition of the Viennese Kaffeehaus.

The popularity of the Coffee Houses in Vienna and their importance to Vienna social life is probably linked as well to the extremely relaxed atmosphere inside these Cafés: It is completely normal for the guest to linger alone for hours and study the omnipresent newspapers. Along with coffee, the waiter will serve an obligatory glass of cold tap water and during a long stay will often bring additional water unrequested, with the idea being that you are a guest who should feel welcomed and not pressured to leave for another patron.

At least a couple of visits to a Kaffeehaus are compulsory if you want to understand Viennese traditions!
