Recipe Collections – Kaffee und Kuchen

The rich sweetness of good German cake goes hand in hand with stimulating steaming coffee and great conversation. Gathering friends and family together for Kaffee and Kuchen Klatsch invokes that feeling of Gemütlichkeit (coziness) that we all need from time to time to counter the stresses of everyday modern living. So consider snuggling up one afternoon with friends and family for a traditional German Kaffee und Kuchen Klatsch (coffee & cake chat), accompanied by coffee and cakes, stollen or cookies.

Grown-up parties call for grown-up desserts.

People are so obsessed with coffee liqueur right now, so much so that search for coffee liqueur recipes on Pinterest is up 110% since last year alone. But the real shocker? They're not just looking for how to make a White Russian. Instead they're adding a boozy kick to everything from brownies to layer cakes to chocolate mousse. Find a few of our favorite ways to use it here—just make sure your kids don't get into these adults-only sweets.

Espresso Brownie Bites With Kahlua Buttercream

Top off these brownies with a kiss of boozy buttercream for a final touch.

Chocolate Mudslide Cake

Mudslide No-Churn Ice Cream

Or you can turn that same cocktail into this easy-to-make ice cream.

Tiramisu Pudding Shots

Whenever people yell "Shots! Shots! Shots!" we wish they were talking about these.

Kahlua Chocolate Cupcakes

When there's Kahlua in the cake and frosting, how could you make a cupcake even better? Drizzling it with salted caramel, obviously.

Pumpkin Tiramisu Cake

Meet your new favorite fall dessert—two layers of pumpkin spice cake soaked in coffee liqueur and topped with mascarpone frosting.

Coffee Liqueur Tres Leches Cake Shots

The apple cream pan is surprisingly not overly sweet with a lot of cubic apples on top. Munching through the whole chestnut in matcha roll left us wanting more. 🌰

Carrot cake baked with passion 🥕🍰 @bakerandcooksg

We heard about this Artisan bakery place for some time. Helmed by the Global baker Dean Brettschneider 🌟, we can't miss this!

Dropped by to Bugis Junction and delight to notice one of their outlets there. We were recommended by their very helpful staff to try the carrot cake $5.80 (one of their signature bakes)👩‍🍳

We can say that it is one of the best carrot cake we have tried so far in SG. The cake is moist and just right amount of sweetness & spices with crunchy pumpkin seed & a juicy piece of apricot on top. Highly recommended! 👌🐜

The Eaten Path A global collection of food and travel stories, 2008-2012

I’ll admit it: I enjoy the sweeter things in life. If given the choice between savory or sweet, I’m almost always going to reach for the sweets, though at times I do want to have my cake and eat it too. Fortunately, this predilection has brought me to a most wonderful tradition, known in Germany as kaffee und kuchen (“coffee and cake”).

Kaffee und kuchen is also referred to as a zwischenmahlzeit, or a meal between meals (similar to the British tradition of Teatime), and is really an excuse to get together in the afternoon. The “official” kaffee und kuchen time is 4:00 p.m., when Germans might pause to enjoy some treats, gossip, catch up or spend a leisurely afternoon moment with friends, family or guests.

I may be stretching it a bit when I call kaffee und kuchen a tradition, as it seems to be a dying one in Germany’s modern times. It’s hard these days to find people willing or able to make time for this old form of entertainment, and if so, then it’s most likely on a Sunday afternoon, when everything is essentially closed. That said, everyone is still aware that this pastime once existed, and every so often I find the younger folk sharing a kaffee und kuchen afternoon with their friends, simply on account of its kitsch value.

What makes this tradition so beautiful and so accessible is Germany’s endless line of bakeries and cafes. Most of them are bound to have some type of kuchen, and given such a wide variance of quality and type, those browsing the full selection of cakes, tarts and pies must know exactly where to go for the right dessert. Those who just want to enjoy something sweet with a nice cup of coffee can pop into almost any café or bakery and be on their way to a great afternoon.

If you are averse to heavy cream, butter, fat and loads of sugar, then sadly this isn’t a tradition for you. German cakes are no joke when it comes to making sure every possibly unhealthy ingredient is used, and that’s why I’m in love with them. Many cakes you’ll find filled with pure butter cream. Others are topped with all sorts of fresh fruits. Yet others are crowned with a half-foot mountain of pure chocolate with sugary frosting, and of course there are cakes baked with alcohol, like schnapps or rum. I wouldn’t necessarily promote consuming every one of these as a daily tradition, but as a lover of sweets I find it necessary to sometimes let go of my health-conscious views and indulge. I also find it necessary to ask for a healthy dose of schlagsahne (fresh whipping cream) to accompany my already sinful slice of life.

Bonn is still home to many wonderful destinations for kaffee und kuchen. I’m partial to Schloss-Café Poppelsdorf, as they have a wonderful selection of cakes and a wonderful outdoor patio. I would also recommend Breuer’s Cafe, which, although a bit on the outskirts of Bonn, houses a huge offering of sweets. Both cafes – along with most cafes here in Bonn – happily serve delicious coffee drinks to accompany these treats, and I am never disappointed in the quality of coffee here in Germany.

Tradition is what brings us together and what keeps us together, and when it comes to German bakeries, tradition is constantly challenging my waistline. The sweet spot of this tradition embodies two things I adore: the chance to indulge in excessive desserts (before dinner of all things) and the chance to spend time with family and friends. Kaffee und kuchen, antiquated as it may be, acknowledges the need to cut a slice out of our busy lives, to designate an afternoon to simply talk, and of course to do this while stuffing our faces with sugary, fat-laden, cream-stuffed wonder.

Königswinterer Str. 697

I’ve become obsessed with teatime recently… not so much the appointed time as the act of taking a breather and enjoying the simple pleasure of coffee and pastry, as you’ve been doing. The corner of my new bedroom will soon house a 2×2′ bar table, two stools, a Japanese tea set, French press, and pastry dish expressly for this purpose! I love sharing a coffee with a friend at the local cafe, but there’s something about having a teatime corner at home that is immensely more appealing.

Hello! I am spending the month of July in Bonn and happened upon your articles while Googling for some particular places to eat. I will have to give Schloss-Café a try! Many thanks.

@ James – So glad you are a fan of the tradition as well – it’s nice that it still lives on in other places in the world, in other people’s lives.

@ Chris – Enjoy your time in Bonn! Hope you get to discover and enjoy many of the culinary delights here to be had!

Easy No Bake Coffee Cheesecakes Recipe

Coffee lovers, this is for you: Easy No Bake Coffee Cheesecakes Recipe! You’ll be able to make these flavorful, mini dessert cups in less than 30 minutes.

Disclosure: This post contains compensated affiliate links that help to support the work on this blog.

This Easy No Bake Coffee Cheesecakes recipe is just another example of how a dessert can be so simple, but can still make an impression. I made these last week and everyone that I served these to was raving over the flavor of them. When I added that they were super simple AND featured Starbucks coffee, they were practically begging for the recipe.

This recipe will take you just 30 minutes (or less) to make. And if you love coffee, like my family does, you will be even happier with this. You’ll only need a few ingredients and there is only a handful of steps.

To make my Easy No Bake Coffee Cheesecakes recipe, you’ll first combine crushed graham crackers with a bit of melted butter and sugar. This mixture is divided up into small cups, glasses or bowls. I used small 4-ounce canning jars.

To give your No Bake Coffee Cheesecake a top notch coffee flavor, you’ll need 1 packet of Starbucks Via Instant Coffee. As you might know, no-bake cheesecakes tend to be softer than baked cheeesecakes, so you wouldn’t want to use actual liquid coffee in this. The dry packet of Starbucks VIA works perfectly. (and no, this post isn’t sponsored by Starbucks – I just love their coffee!) You can buy Starbucks via at your local Starbucks location, in the coffee aisle at your local grocery store, or online: Starbucks Via Instant Coffee.

Using a mixer (I used my red KitchenAid hand mixer), mix softened cream cheese with powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and one packet of the Starbucks VIA. I used the Pike Place Roast, which is a medium roast, but you can substitute one of their other roasts, if you prefer.

See how the Starbucks VIA starts to dissolve so quickly into the cheesecake mixture? These packets are so great for adding coffee flavor to lots of your dessert recipes!

Whip it all up until it’s nice and smooth (as shown below).

Then, fold in a tub of thawed whipped topping, which you can find in the freezer section of your store.

Divide the mixture among your jars. I ended up with 5 servings (in 4-ounce canning jars), but I could have filled them less full and probably stretched it to 6 servings (we also, may or may not have sampled quite a bit of the mixture). You could also put the mixture in a pastry bag with a very large decorating tip and fill the cups up that way, even going higher than the edge of the canning jars.

To finish them off, I chopped up chocolate covered espresso beans, which I found in the bulk section of Winco (my local grocery store). I gave each cup a swirl of whipped cream and then a sprinkle of the chocolate covered coffee beans.

Gingerbread Coffee

"Tastes just like a gingerbread cookie was dunked in my coffee! Very easy to make. I didn't have whipped cream but I'm sure that would make it 6 stars." – Lynda Nelson

  • Viennexican Coffee

This cook created a recipe that combines "the spiciness of Viennese coffees [with] the chocolate and fruit flavors of South American beverages" to create coffee with a kick.

    Kaffee dessert

Starting with an important water filtration system, which is maintenanced weekly, we brew Batdorf & Bronson quality. ORGANIC it is. So even your "regular" house coffee of the day was picked by hand and supports fair trade. A small family farm up in the higher elevations of many Arabica producing countries will thank you for your loyalty, just like we do.

The country that created Espresso and other fine Coffee creations inspired us to buy only the best machine. You receive always a double shot (Restretto) at our place. That double shot (Dancing Goat Signature Blend) goes into a variety of traditional Coffee beverages like, Con Panna, Cafe Mocha, Americano, Latte, and more.

    Sweet Treats

Looks like a sibling to the Castella Cake, the crater cheese honey cake $3.80 tastes more subtle with caramelised cheese topping and soft & fluffy texture at the base. 🐿

A little breakfast snatch from @breadtalksg for cheeselovers like us! 😜 👌🧀

    Filipino Delight @ "Inasal" 🍮

Never tried Filipino cuisine before. Always pass through Inasal and notice a long queue at the front (p.s. Their restaurant serving warm Filipino Dishes is also open at the back)🕺

Today is no different and the queue is already there. We ordered 2 takeaway Filipino desserts: Biko $1.00 & Cassava Cake $1.50. Biko (on your left) is a sweet rice cake (we assume it's made with black glutinous rice). 💁‍♂️ It is not too sweet but the rice texture is not consistent. We prefer the Cassava cake (on your right) which is rich & addictive. The smell of coconut & butter make it so lush and go very well with our tea. 🍵

Definitely come back for savoury dishes in next occasion. Check them out if you are in lucky plaza (Suggest going there during weekday as the place is very crowded on Sunday)🤓

One of famous food stall at Maxwell "Xing Xing" snack stall. The stall sells a lot of different types of handmade snacks (Kuehs $0.7, Ondeh Ondeh (4 pcs for $2) & Tapioca cake(unspecified price). The big box containing various types go for $5.10 🍢

We got 2 Ondeh Ondehs & 2 Tapioca cakes. ( $2 in total). Tapioca cake is not too sweet with soft texture. Slightly surprised with Ondeh Ondeh as the Gula Melaka inside the ball is still in solid form.(too hurry to sell perhaps). However, all the snacks are tasty enough and perfect with hot drink. ☕️🍵🍡

Sweet potato Polo bun & Winter melon Wife pastry @ "Polo Taizi" 🍪

Quite well known among the local in Toa Payoh Central, this "Polo Taizi" is a quick fix kind of place when the crave for polo bun strikes in.🤤

Salted egg yolk trend might have waned as they discontinued the salted egg yolk polo bun. We tried "sweet potato polo bun" $1.30 & "Winter melon Wife pastry" $1 this time. 🍠

Lookwise, their polo buns are not that attractive (the shell doesn't look resembling pineapple) unlike traditional ones. Upon the first bite, the pastry texture is not as crunchy as how we expect either. Luckily that the sweet potato filling saves our day as it tastes alright and not overly sweet. 👌

The winter melon wife pastry is not memorable so do stick to polo bun if you visit the stall. Other items we 'might' try (only if hang out in this area) 😅 are Polo Charsiew Bun (signature), Charcoal egg tart and crispy coco bun.😇

Best Pineapple Tart ever. @ Le Cafe 🍮

Been to Pek Kio market many times it just come across this hidden gem on one sugar rush evening! 🤤

After talking to very friendly lady shop owners and check with her for rum balls ($12.90) and coffee cookie (1 jar for $15), we decide to grab their takeaway signature pineapple box (10 balls for $10.20). 🍍

First bite, the golf ball shaped pastry has a nice crunch and super moist pineapple filling!! Hands down, it is the best pineapple tart we have tried so far. I know it's a big statement but we will hand this crown to them until we find a better place for pineapple tart! 🙇 Next items are coffee cookie & rum ball. who wanna try them?

    "Uggli muffins" literally! 🍮

Neighbor to the famous Chay Sua Carrot cake in Toa Payoh market & food centre, this "uggli muffins" stall is quite popular for its catchy name. They used to run a promo "buy 5 get 1 free". When we check the muffin stall again, the deal is now "buy 10 get 2 free"$11 (ie. $1.10 per piece) 😧

We proceed to order a few muffins: banana & walnuts and a cranberry muffin to try. The muffins are tad too dry, too sweet and not fluffy. We were expecting it differently as the taste and texture should be a selling point. Although the muffins are cheap, we will give it a pass as it is not worth the calories and underwhelming compared to what is offered in the area.

P.S. Stay tuned for our next posts! 🤓

"Chocolat N' Spice" Muffin adventure 🍫🌶

On a hunt of the best muffin in Singapore, we visit Shunfu Market to check on Chocolat N' Spice that was raved by some locals we know in the area. 🤓

A short walk 7 mins from Marymount MRT(Exit A), we make it to the shunfu market. The market has 2 floors (wet market at the basement and Top floor is where this shop occupies 2 stall spaces which just perhaps a proof of their popularity! 😄

Time for muffin test! We ordered 4 flavours to try: Banana walnut, orange & raisin, coffee walnut and blueberry and a chestnut tart.

Hands down to orange & raisin! We love the taste a lot. Our muffin rank: orange & raisin > coffee walnut > blueberry > banana walnut. The takeaway chestnut tart might not look photogenic but tastes wholesome chestnut (both at the base & the topping).🌰

Stay tuned for our next post on another muffin place to compare with this one!!
